  • The prevalence of work-related stress, and its association to self perceived health and sick leave, in a cohort of employed Swedish women, in 2004 – 2005
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Eur J Public Health. ; 18, s. 130-223
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: In order to determine the need for preventive steps decreasing the development of sick leave in women it is of great concern to know more about women’s work-related stress. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of work-related stress and its association with self perceived health and sick leave in a population of employed Swedish women. Methods: This cross-sectional population study of women comprised 424 employed, working women who answered questionnaires concerning work-related stress, self perceived health and sick leave. The odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was calculated in order to analyze the association between the exposure variables of work-related stress and outcome variables of ill health symptoms, self-rated health and sick leave. Results: Ten percent of the entire group reported an overall high perceived stress due to organization and conflicts and 25% an overall high perceived stress due to individual demands and commitment. Twenty-two percent reported low influence at work and 33 % reported work to spare time interference. All categories of work-related stress was significantly associated with an increased odds of high level of symptoms of ill health, with the highest OR for high perceived stress due to organization and conflicts and perceived stress due to individual demands and commitment with an OR of 3.17 (1.51 – 6.62 ) and 4.53 (2.71 – 7.56) respectively. High perceived stress due to organization and conflicts and low influence at work was significantly associated with sick leave with an OR of 3.85 (CI=1.59 – 9.30) and 2.54 (CI=1.17 – 5.48) respectively. Conclusions: There was a strong association between on one hand work-related stress, on the other symptoms of illness and sick leave. These findings give us an implication that work-related stress is an important public health issue among a general population of Swedish employed women.

  • Internet therapy for Depression in Primary Care – a Randomized Controlled Trial
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 13th European Congress of Psychology.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study aims to investigate whether Cognitive Behavior Internet therapy (iCBT) for depression is as effective as usual treatment in primary care (PC) settings. Previous research shows good efficacy for iCBT for depression. It might also be a way to cost-efficiently offer evidence based psychological treatment to more patients, given the substantial shortage of trained CBT-therapists in PC. So far, few studies are conducted with a focus on the effectiveness in PC-settings. We identified patients with mild to moderate depression at PC Centers in the Västra Götaland region. They were randomly assigned to either Internet therapy (iCBT) or to treatment as usual (TAU). Before inclusion a structured interview was performed by a psychologist/¬psychotherapist. At present, 75 patients are included. The iCBT encompasses a 12-week access to a Behavioral Activation treatment program on the internet, a workbook, support by the evaluating psychologist/psychotherapist via 3 telephone calls (week 1, 4-5 and 8-12), and weekly contact via secure e-mail. More intense telephone and e mail contacts are available when needed. The main outcome is measured by BDI-II. Preliminary findings show that iCBT is at least as effective as TAU also in PC-settings. Data from the 3- and 6-month follow-ups will be available in June 2013.

  • Internet therapy for depression in primary care - a RCT

    • This study aims to investigate whether Cognitive Behavior Internet therapy (iCBT) for depression is as effective as usual treatment in primary care (PC) settings. Previous research shows good efficacy for iCBT for depression. It might also be a way to cost-efficiently offer evidence based psychological treatment to more patients, given the substantial shortage of trained CBT-therapists in PC. So far, few studies are conducted with a focus on the effectiveness in PC-settings. We identified patients with mild to moderate depression at 16 participating PC Centers in the Västra Götaland region. Before inclusion a structured interview was performed by a psychologist/¬psychotherapist to ascertain that the patients met the inclusion criteria. A total of 90 patients were included. The patients were then randomly assigned to either Internet therapy (iCBT) or to treatment as usual (TAU). The iCBT encompasses a 12-week access to a Behavioral Activation treatment program on the internet (Depressionshjälpen), a workbook, support by the evaluating psychologist/psychotherapist via 3 telephone calls (week 1, 4-5 and 8-12), and weekly contact via secure e-mail. More intense telephone and e mail contacts are available when needed. The primary outcome measure is BDI-II, secondarily MADRS-S is also used. Our findings at post-treatment is that iCBT is as effective as TAU also in PC-settings. Data from the 3- and 9-month follow-ups will be available in 2014.

  • Internet therapy for depression in Primary Care (PC)
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IVth Biannual European forum for primary care (EFPC) Conference: Crossing Borders in Primary Care. 3-4 September 2012, Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose Investigate if Internet therapy for depression is as effective as treatment as usual in the PC setting. Theory Research shows good efficacy for Internet therapy for depression. Internet might cost-efficiently enable delivery of high quality psychological treatment for patients in PC. Methods In this RCT-study we identified patients with mild-moderate depression at PC Centers in the Västra Götaland region. They were randomized to either Internet therapy (IT) or treatment as usual (TAU). Before inclusion structured interview was performed by psychologist/psychotherapist. The IT condition consist of 12 weeks access to a Behavioral Activation treatment programme on the internet, a workbook, support by the evaluating psychologist/psychotherapist via 3 telephone calls and weekly contact via secure e-mail (more telephone and/or e mail contact if needed). Outcome is measured by MADRS-S and BDI-II a! t 0, 3, 6 and 12 months. Findings At present, 60 patients are included. Our preliminary findings support the use of Internet therapy for depression in PC. In September 2012, data from 6 and 12 months follow-up will be available. Discussion Internet CBT could be an effective treatment of mild to moderate depression in PC. This RCT will give knowledge about effectiveness in primary care, team cooperation and patients’ perceptions.
