  • J-PARC Neutrino Beamline Upgrade Technical Design Report
  • 2019
  • Rapport (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this document, technical details of the upgrade plan of the J-PARC neutrino beamline for the extension of the T2K experiment are described. T2K has proposed to accumulate data corresponding to 2×1022 protons-on-target in the next decade, aiming at an initial observation of CP violation with 3σ or higher significance in the case of maximal CP violation. Methods to increase the neutrino beam intensity, which are necessary to achieve the proposed data increase, are described.

  • Space omics research in Europe : Contributions, geographical distribution and ESA member state funding schemes
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: iScience. - : Elsevier BV. - 2589-0042. ; 25:3, s. 103920-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European research community, via European Space Agency (ESA) spaceflight opportunities, has significantly contributed toward our current understanding of spaceflight biology. Recent molecular biology experiments include “omic” analysis, which provides a holistic and systems level understanding of the mechanisms underlying phenotypic adaptation. Despite vast interest in, and the immense quantity of biological information gained from space omics research, the knowledge of ESA-related space omics works as a collective remains poorly defined due to the recent exponential application of omics approaches in space and the limited search capabilities of pre-existing records. Thus, a review of such contributions is necessary to clarify and promote the development of space omics among ESA and ESA state members. To address this gap, in this review, we i) identified and summarized omics works led by European researchers, ii) geographically described these omics works, and iii) highlighted potential caveats in complex funding scenarios among ESA member states.

  • Outcomes following small bowel obstruction due to malignancy in the national audit of small bowel obstruction
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Surgical Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0748-7983 .- 1532-2157. ; 45:12, s. 2319-2324
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2019 Elsevier Ltd, BASO ~ The Association for Cancer Surgery, and the European Society of Surgical Oncology Introduction: Patients with cancer who develop small bowel obstruction are at high risk of malnutrition and morbidity following compromise of gastrointestinal tract continuity. This study aimed to characterise current management and outcomes following malignant small bowel obstruction. Methods: A prospective, multicentre cohort study of patients with small bowel obstruction who presented to UK hospitals between 16th January and 13th March 2017. Patients who presented with small bowel obstruction due to primary tumours of the intestine (excluding left-sided colonic tumours) or disseminated intra-abdominal malignancy were included. Outcomes included 30-day mortality and in-hospital complications. Cox-proportional hazards models were used to generate adjusted effects estimates, which are presented as hazard ratios (HR) alongside the corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The threshold for statistical significance was set at the level of P ≤ 0.05 a-priori. Results: 205 patients with malignant small bowel obstruction presented to emergency surgery services during the study period. Of these patients, 50 had obstruction due to right sided colon cancer, 143 due to disseminated intraabdominal malignancy, 10 had primary tumours of the small bowel and 2 patients had gastrointestinal stromal tumours. In total 100 out of 205 patients underwent a surgical intervention for obstruction. 30-day in-hospital mortality rate was 11.3% for those with primary tumours and 19.6% for those with disseminated malignancy. Severe risk of malnutrition was an independent predictor for poor mortality in this cohort (adjusted HR 16.18, 95% CI 1.86 to 140.84, p = 0.012). Patients with right-sided colon cancer had high rates of morbidity. Conclusions: Mortality rates were high in patients with disseminated malignancy and in those with right sided colon cancer. Further research should identify optimal management strategy to reduce morbidity for these patient groups.

  • Cubic, hexagonal and tetragonal FeGex phases (x = 1, 1.5, 2) : Raman spectroscopy and magnetic properties
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: CrystEngComm. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1466-8033. ; 23:37, s. 6506-6517
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is currently an emerging drive towards computational materials design and fabrication of predicted novel materials. One of the keys to developing appropriate fabrication methods is determination of the composition and phase. Here we explore the FeGe system and establish reference Raman signatures for the distinction between FeGe hexagonal and cubic structures, as well as FeGe2and Fe2Ge3phases. The experimental results are substantiated by first principles lattice dynamics calculations as well as by complementary structural characterization such as transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, along with magnetic measurements.

  • Combining plant volatiles and pheromones to catch two insect pests in the same trap : Examples from two berry crops
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Crop Protection. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0261-2194 .- 1873-6904. ; 109, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most horticultural crops are attacked by more than one insect pest. As broad-spectrum chemical control options are becoming increasingly restricted, there is a need to develop novel control methods. Semiochemical attractants are available for three important horticultural pests, strawberry blossom weevil, Anthonomus rubi Herbst (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), European tarnished plant bug, Lygus rugulipennis Poppius (Hemiptera: Miridae) and raspberry beetle, Byturus tomentostts deGeer (Coleoptera: Byturidae). Traps targeting more than one pest species would be more practical and economical for both monitoring and mass trapping than traps for single-species. In this study we aimed to (1) improve the effectiveness of existing traps for insect pests in strawberry and raspberry crops by increasing catches of each species, and (2) test if attractants for two unrelated pest species could be combined to capture both in the same trap without decreasing the total catches. Field tests were carried out in four European countries and different combinations of semiochemicals were compared. A volatile from strawberry flowers, 1,4 dimethoxybenzene (DMB), increased the attractiveness of the aggregation pheromone to both sexes of A. rubi. The host-plant volatile, phenylacetaldehyde (PAA), increased the attraction of female L. rugulipennis to the sex pheromone, and, in strawberry, there was some evidence that adding DMB increased catches further. Traps baited with the aggregation pheromone of A. rubi, DMB, the sex pheromone of L rugulipennis and PAA attracted both target species to the same trap with no significant difference in catches compared to those single-species traps. In raspberry, catches in traps baited with a combination of A. rubi aggregation pheromone, DMB and the commercially available lure for B. tomentosus, based on raspberry flower volatiles, were similar to those in single-species traps. In both crops the efficiency of the traps still needs improvement, but the multi species traps are adequate for monitoring and should not lead to confusion for the user as the target species are easy to distinguish from each other.

  • Management of insect pests using semiochemical traps
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Acta Horticulturae. - 9789462611221 ; , s. 121-127
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the absence of effective control measures, the strawberry blossom weevil (Anthonomus rubi) (SBW) and the raspberry beetle (Byturus tomentosus) (RB) cause large (10 - >80%) losses in yield and quality in organically grown raspberry. Attractive lures for both pests were combined into a single multitrap for the economical management of both of these pests at the same time. This is one of the first approaches to pest management of non-lepidopteran insect pests of horticultural crops using semiochemicals in the EU, and probably the first to target multiple species from different insect orders. The aim is to develop optimized lures and cost-effective trap designs for mass trapping and to determine the optimum density and spatial and temporal patterns of deployment of the traps for controlling these pests by mass trapping. The combination between an aggregation pheromone that attracts Anthonomus rubi and a raspberry flower volatile that attracts Byturus tomentosus seems to be the best combination.

  • Sex pheromone of the Brazilian apple leafroller, Bonagota cranaodes Meyrick (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae)
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Naturforschung C - A Journal of Biosciences. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0939-5075 .- 1865-7125. ; 54:7-8, s. 595-601
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The female sex pheromone of Bonagota (=Phthteochroa) cranaodes (Meyrick) is a blend of (E,Z)-3,5-dodecadienyl acetate (E3,Z5-12:Ac) and (Z)-9-hexadecenyl acetate (Z9-16:Ac) according to analysis of pheromone - gland extracts and field trapping in apple orchards. This is the first time that E3,Z5-12:Ac has been identified as a lepidopteran sex pheromone. Traps baited with 100 mu g E3,Z5-12:Ac were attractive over 15 weeks in the field and were as effective as traps baited with virgin females. Addition of Z9-16:Ac to E3,Z5-12:Ac at ratio of 1:10 had a significantly increase of male moths. The addition of the Z,E and Z:Z isomers to rubber septa baited with E3,Z5-12:Ac did not modify B. cranaodes male attraction, but 10% of EE enhanced trap catch.

  • Chemical vapor deposition of ordered TiOx nanostructures on Au(111)
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Surface Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0039-6028 .- 1879-2758. ; 617, s. 211-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The deposition of TiOx (x <= 2) structures on Au(111) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) has been investigated with high-resolution core level photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Using titanium tetra-isopropoxide as single source precursor it is possible to form different TiOx phases on the surface after deposition: at low coverages, we observe large two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb-lattice Ti2O3 islands with a (2 x 2) registry with the substrate. Higher coverages are dominated by the formation of three-dimensional (3D) TiO2 structures. The TiO2 structures are atomically well ordered provided that the deposition temperature is high enough (500 degrees C). The ordered structure exhibits a LEED pattern characteristic for a rectangular surface unit cell. By performing the deposition at different temperatures it is possible to tune the balance between the 2D and 3D phases: Growth at 500 degrees C significantly favors the formation of 3D TiO2 islands as compared to growth at 200 degrees C and 300 degrees C. • Water Dissociation on Single Crystalline Anatase TiO2(001) Studied by Photoelectron Spectroscopy
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 112:42, s. 16616-16621
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adsorption of water on the anatase TiO2(001)-(4 x 1) surface is studied using synchrotron radiation-excited core level photoelectron spectroscopy. The coverage-dependent adsorption of water at low temperature is monitored and compared to the sequence obtained after heating of a water multilayer. Two adsorption phases of submonolayer coverage can be defined: Phase 1 consists only of dissociated water, observed as OH-groups. This phase is found at low coverage at low temperature (190 K) and is the only state of adsorbed water above similar to 230 K. The saturation coverage of phase 1 is consistent with dissociation on the 4-fold-coordinated Ti ridge atoms of the (4 x 1) surface reconstruction. Phase 2 is found at higher coverage, reached at lower temperature. It consists of a mixture of dissociated and molecular water with a ratio of 1:1 at 170 K. The molecular water is found to bond to the hydroxyl groups. The hydroxyl coverage of phase 2 is approximately 2 times that of phase 1. The results suggest that the OH and H2O species of phase 2 are confined to the ridges of the surface.
