  • Pre-deployment Well-Being Among Single and Partnered National Guard Soldiers : The Role of Their Parents, Social Support, and Stressors
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Military Deployment and its Consequences for Families. - New York : Springer-Verlag New York. - 9781461487111 - 9781461487128 ; , s. 151-172
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Families are a key source of support for National Guard Soldiers, yet little is known about the influence of parents on Soldiers’ pre-deployment well-being. In this chapter, we examine the potential role family may play in the psychological well-being of National Guard Soldiers. We present initial findings from the Readiness and Resilience in National Guard Soldiers (RINGS-2) study—an ongoing, prospective investigation of 2,089 National Guard Soldiers and their families. Single versus partnered Soldiers were compared on measures of pre-deployment well-being (post-traumatic stress symptoms, depression symptoms, and alcohol misuse). Prior to deployment, partnered Soldiers had higher PTSD and depression symptoms than single Soldiers, while single Soldiers reported greater alcohol misuse than partnered Soldiers. Multiple linear regression analyses examined the role of family contextual factors in understanding Soldiers’ pre-deployment well-being. Findings demonstrated the important role families can play in Soldiers’ well-being prior to deployment, both as a source of support and strain.

  • Application of Animal Movement Models to Acoustic Telemetry Positioning
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Advances in Hydraulic Research. - : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. ; , s. 29-41
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Over the past decade, acoustic telemetry has become commonplace in studies on fish movement and behaviour. Over small spatial scales, arrays of acoustic receivers can be used to estimate movement paths in 2- or 3-dimensions with high temporal resolutions. Despite the growing prevalence of acoustic telemetry arrays, guidelines on how to generate robust position estimates—and further utilize this data in animal movement models such as hidden Markov models or step selection functions—are sparse. As animal movement models generally require either true positions or accurately specified spatial error distributions, understanding positioning error is crucial for behavioural inference. Here, current methods of telemetry positioning are reviewed. Simulated case studies are used to highlight the effect of state space model parameter selection on positioning accuracy, and in turn, the fitting of animal movement models.

  • Importance and Potential Applications of Freight and Service Activity Models
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: City Logistics 1: New Opportunities and Challenges / edited by Eiichi Taniguchi, Russell G. Thompson.. - London & New York : Wiley-ISTE. - 9781786302052 ; , s. 45-63
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter aims to raise awareness about the importance of the specific consideration of the needs of Freight and Service Activity (FSA) in transportation planning and management efforts. It also aims to exemplify the potential application of establishment‐level FSA models to support these efforts. FSA encompasses a wide range of activities performed at commercial establishments. The freight side of FSA represents the pick‐up and delivery activity associated with the production and consumption of supplies. The chapter provides a summary of key features of urban economies and their relation to FSA. It briefly describes the data and approach used to estimate FSA models. The chapter summarizes the chief findings of the research. FSA models have multiple practical applications. This is possible because the establishment‐level nature of these models allows them to be used at various levels of geography, ranging from the state/metropolitan level to local analyses at the building level.

  • Databases and associated tools for glycomics and glycoproteomics
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: High-Throughput Glycomics and Glycoproteomics. Eds: Gordan Lauc & Manfred Wuhrer. - New York : Springer. - 1064-3745. - 9781493964932 - 9781493964918 ; , s. 235-264
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The access to biodatabases for glycomics and glycoproteomics has proven to be essential for current glycobiological research. This chapter presents available databases that are devoted to different aspects of glycobioinformatics. This includes oligosaccharide sequence databases, experimental databases, 3D structure databases (of both glycans and glycorelated proteins) and association of glycans with tissue, disease, and proteins. Specific search protocols are also provided using tools associated with experimental databases for converting primary glycoanalytical data to glycan structural information. In particular, researchers using glycoanalysis methods by U/HPLC (GlycoBase), MS (GlycoWorkbench, UniCarb-DB, GlycoDigest), and NMR (CASPER) will benefit from this chapter. In addition we also include information on how to utilize glycan structural information to query databases that associate glycans with proteins (UniCarbKB) and with interactions with pathogens (Sugar Bind). © Springer Science+Business Media New York 2017.

  • Introduction and overview
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Environment and Sustainability in a Globalizing World. Andrea J. Nightingale (red.). - New York : Routledge. - 9781317501831 ; , s. 3-12
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter discusses the conceptual framework underlying many approaches to sustainability. It explores how the concepts of natural limits, the importance of cultural diversity and biodiversity, and ecosystems durability or fragility have affected specific local environmentsociety dynamics and the work of sustainable development projects. The chapter introduces three core narratives that derive originally from environmental science: balance; limits; and diversity. The idea that nature is characterized by balance, or stabilizing relationships, is central within environmental sciences, especially ecology. The second concept, limits, is closely linked to carrying capacity, or the idea that a given ecosystem can provide a finite amount of food and other necessary resources. Sustainability has further been linked to the idea of diversity. Within ecology, diversity has to do with the number of species present within a community as well as the relative abundance of each species. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed this book. © 2019 Taylor & Francis.
