  • Introducing a survey methodology for assessing LoRaWAN coverage in Smart Campus scenarios
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728148922 ; , s. 708-712
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The LoRa is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technology. It has been proposed as a viable wireless connection method for the implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT), thanks to its wide coverage, low complexity and low energy consumption. Several studies ave been carried out about real coverage performance. In this article, a new test methodology for the experimental evaluation of LoRaWAN coverage within a smart campus is presented. The new approach consists in the definition of devices, method and procedures. The architecture of the mobile node is outlined. The survey procedure is based on a mapping phase, necessary to highlight the LoRaWAN coverage in the test area. Finally, a use case is described in the article: it is not intended for evaluating a specific implementation, but for assessing the suitability of the proposed methodology. The use case results demonstrate the effectiveness of the survey methodology in a real smart campus. © 2020 IEEE.

  • Use of multiple low cost autonomous drones for high voltage line inspection
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 33rd Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences, ICAS 2022. - : International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences. - 9781713871163 ; , s. 5591-5596
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many high-voltage line monitoring companies have been using drones to carry out preventive inspection. The inspection procedure usually makes use of pilots that control drones which films the transmission lines. Afterwards, the images need to be analyzed in order to detect problems. This work proposes the usage of drones that make autonomous flights to perform the inspection. The proposed approach exploits three drones to inspect each important part of a transmission line, with the first inspecting the wires, the second inspecting the towers and the third checking the safety area under the line. All three drones are controlled by an embedded system with artificial intelligence which is able to identify a potential problem and issue an alert to locations that might present issues. © 2022 ICAS. • On the use of LoRaWAN for the Internet of Intelligent Vehicles in Smart City scenarios
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728148427
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Automotive world is changing with the introduction of Intelligent Vehicles. Today, an increasing number of vehicles may send data to the Internet, helping car manufacturer to implement the Industry 4.0 paradigm. The collected data during the lifetime of the vehicles can be used to improve both product and production facilities. Moreover, the availability of additional data coming from onboard sensors could be used to obtain information about the environment surrounding the vehicle. The Smart City scenario includes an extraordinary number of new sensors (in urban area) and vehicles can be thought as additional mobile sensors. This paper describes the prototype of a Vehicle-to-Cloud interface with OBD-II (On Board Diagnostic) communication, 3G/4G connectivity, and LoRaWAN [used as backup channel]. LoRaWAN infrastructures are largely diffused in Smart Cities and they can provide a suitable alternative to cover some areas when 3G/4G fails. Last, considering the Smart City scenarios, this paper discusses the application constrains and design directions to achieve a correct integration between LoRaWAN infrastructure and the Internet of Intelligent Vehicles. © 2020 IEEE.

  • Sawtooth control in JET with ITER relevant low field side resonance ICRH and ITER like wall
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 41st EPS Conference on Plasma Physics, EPS 2014. - : European Physical Society (EPS).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New experiments at JET with the ITER like wall show for the first time that ITER-relevant low field side resonance first harmonic ICRH with can be used to control sawteeth that have been initially lengthened by fast particles. In contrast to previous [J. P. Graves et al, Nature Communs 3, 624 (2012)] high field side resonance sawtooth control experiments undertaken at JET, it is found that the sawteeth of L-mode plasmas can be controlled with less accurate alignment between the resonance layer and the sawtooth inversion radius. This advantage, as well as the discovery that sawteeth can be shortened with various antenna phasings, including dipole, indicates that ICRH is a particularly effective and versatile tool that can be used in future fusion machines for controlling sawteeth. Without sawtooth control, NTMs and locked modes were triggered at very low normalised beta. High power H-mode experiments show the extent to which ICRH can be tuned to control sawteeth and NTMs while simultaneously providing effective electron heating with improved flushing of high Z core impurities. Dedicated ICRH simulations using SELFO, SCENIC and EVE, including wide drift orbit effects, explain why sawtooth control is effective with various antenna phasings, and show that the sawtooth control mechanism cannot be explained by enhancement of the magnetic shear. Hybrid kinetic-MHD stability calculations using MISHKA and HAGIS unravel the optimal sawtooth control regimes in these ITER relevant plasma conditions.
