  • Origin and evolution of surface spin current in topological insulators
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 97:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Dirac surface states of topological insulators offer a unique possibility for creating spin polarized charge currents due to the spin-momentum locking. Here we demonstrate that the control over the bulk and surface contribution is crucial to maximize the charge-to-spin conversion efficiency. We observe an enhancement of the spin signal due to surface-dominated spin polarization while freezin g out the bulk conductivity in semiconducting Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 below 100K. Detailed measurements up to room temperature exhibit a strong reduction of the magnetoresistance signal between 2and100K, which we attribute to the thermal excitation of bulk carriers and to the electron-phonon coupling in the surface states. The presence and dominance of this effect up to room temperature is promising for spintronic science and technology.

  • Incipient Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in two-dimensional coplanar Josephson junctions
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 94:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Superconducting hybrid junctions are revealing a variety of effects. Some of them are due to the special layout of these devices, which often use a coplanar configuration with relatively large barrier channels and the possibility of hosting Pearl vortices. A Josephson junction with a quasi-ideal two-dimensional barrier has been realized by growing graphene on SiC with Al electrodes. Chemical vapor deposition offers centimeter size monolayer areas where it is possible to realize a comparative analysis of different devices with nominally the same barrier. In samples with a graphene gap below 400 nm, we have found evidence of Josephson coherence in the presence of an incipient Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. When the magnetic field is cycled, a remarkable hysteretic collapse and revival of the Josephson supercurrent occurs. Similar hysteresis are found in granular systems and are usually justified within the Bean critical state model (CSM). We show that the CSM, with appropriate account for the low-dimensional geometry, can partly explain the odd features measured in these junctions.

  • Induced unconventional superconductivity on the surface states of Bi2Te3 topological insulator
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 8:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Topological superconductivity is central to a variety of novel phenomena involving the interplay between topologically ordered phases and broken-symmetry states. The key ingredient is an unconventional order parameter, with an orbital component containing a chiral p(x) + ip(y) wave term. Here we present phase-sensitive measurements, based on the quantum interference in nanoscale Josephson junctions, realized by using Bi2Te3 topological insulator. We demonstrate that the induced superconductivity is unconventional and consistent with a sign-changing order parameter, such as a chiral px + ipy component. The magnetic field pattern of the junctions shows a dip at zero externally applied magnetic field, which is an incontrovertible signature of the simultaneous existence of 0 and pi coupling within the junction, inherent to a non trivial order parameter phase. The nano-textured morphology of the Bi2Te3 flakes, and the dramatic role played by thermal strain are the surprising key factors for the display of an unconventional induced order parameter.

  • High-Transparency Al/Bi2Te3 Double-Barrier Heterostructures
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity. - 1558-2515 .- 1051-8223. ; 27:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have fabricated highly transparent Al/Bi2Te3/Al superconductor/normal metal/superconductor double-barrier heterostructures. Transport measurements reveal the presence of multiple Andreev reflections related to two distinct energy gaps that we identify as the induced superconducting gap in the two electrodes. The realization of high-transparency Josephson junctions with topological insulators is an important step towards the study of topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions.

  • Bulk-free topological insulator Bi2Se3 nanoribbons with magnetotransport signatures of Dirac surface states
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2040-3372 .- 2040-3364. ; 10:41, s. 19595-19602
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2018 The Royal Society of Chemistry. Many applications of topological insulators (TIs) as well as new phenomena require devices with reduced dimensions. While much progress has been made to realize thin films of TIs with low bulk carrier densities, nanostructures have not yet been reported with similar properties, despite the fact that reduced dimensions should help diminish the contributions from bulk carriers. Here we demonstrate that Bi2Se3 nanoribbons, grown by a simple catalyst-free physical-vapour deposition, have inherently low bulk carrier densities, and can be further made bulk-free by thickness reduction, thus revealing the high mobility topological surface states. Magnetotransport and Hall conductance measurements, in single nanoribbons, show that at thicknesses below 30 nm, the bulk transport is completely suppressed which is supported by self-consistent band-bending calculations. The results highlight the importance of material growth and geometrical confinement to properly exploit the unique properties of topological surface states.

  • Low temperature hidden Fermi-liquid charge transport in under doped LaxSr1-xCuO2 infinite layer electron-doped thin films
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics Condensed Matter. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 31:44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied the low temperature electrical transport properties of La-x Sr1-xCuO2 thin films grown by oxide molecular beam epitaxy on (1 1 0) GdScO3 and TbScO3 substrates. The transmission electron microscopy measurements and the x-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the epitaxy of the obtained films and the study of their normal state transport properties, removing the ambiguity regarding the truly conducting layer, allowed to highlight the presence of a robust hidden Fermi liquid charge transport in the low temperature properties of infinite layer electron doped cuprate superconductors. These results are in agreement with recent observations performed in other p and n doped cuprate materials and point toward a general description of the superconducting and normal state properties in these compounds.

  • Ultra low noise YBa2Cu3O7-delta nano superconducting quantum interference devices implementing nanowires
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 104:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present results on ultra low noise YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) nano Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (nanoSQUIDs). To realize such devices, we implemented high quality YBCO nanowires, working as weak links between two electrodes. We observe critical current modulation as a function of an externally applied magnetic field in the full temperature range below the transition temperature T-C. The white flux noise below 1 mu Phi(0)/root Hz at T = 8K makes our nanoSQUIDs very attractive for the detection of small spin systems.

  • Room Temperature Electrical Detection of Spin Polarized Currents in Topological Insulators
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 15:12, s. 7976-7981
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Topological insulators (TIs) are a new class of quantum materials that exhibit a current-induced spin polarization due to spin-momentum locking of massless Dirac Fermions in their surface states. This helical spin polarization in three-dimensional (3D) TIs has been observed using photoemission spectroscopy up to room temperatures. Recently, spin polarized surface currents in 3D TIs were detected electrically by potentiometric measurements using ferromagnetic detector contacts. However, these electric measurements are so far limited to cryogenic temperatures. Here we report the room temperature electrical detection of the spin polarization on the surface of Bi2Se3 by employing spin sensitive ferromagnetic tunnel contacts. The current-induced spin polarization on the Bi2Se3 surface is probed by measuring the magnetoresistance while switching the magnetization direction of the ferromagnetic detector. A spin resistance of up to 70 mΩ is measured at room temperature, which increases linearly with current bias, reverses sign with current direction, and decreases with higher TI thickness. The magnitude of the spin signal, its sign, and control experiments, using different measurement geometries and interface conditions, rule out other known physical effects. These findings provide further information about the electrical detection of current-induced spin polarizations in 3D TIs at ambient temperatures and could lead to innovative spin-based technologies.

  • Josephson effect in Al/Bi2Se3/Al coplanar hybrid devices
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physica C: Superconductivity and its Applications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-4534. ; 503, s. 162-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The edge states of Topological Insulators (TI) are protected against backscattering, thanks to the topological properties arising from their band structure. Coupling a TI to a superconductor (S) can induce unconventional effects, including the creation of Majorana bound states (MBS). The fabrication of coplanar hybrid devices is a fundamental step to pave the way to the understanding of proximity effects in topologically non-trivial systems, and to a large variety of experiments aimed at the possible detection of MBS. We discuss the feasibility and some relevant properties of Al-Bi2Se3-Al coplanar proximity devices. Special attention is devoted to the design of the junction, aimed at enhancing the coupling between the electrodes and the TI.

  • YBa2Cu3O7-delta nanorings to probe fluxoid quantization in High Critical Temperature Superconductors
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physica C: Superconductivity and its Applications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-4534. ; 506, s. 184-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have realized YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) nanorings and measured the magnetoresistance R(B) close to the superconducting transition. The large oscillations that we have measured can be interpreted in terms of vortex dynamics triggering the nanowires to the resistive state. The Fast Fourier Transform spectrum of the magnetoresistance oscillations shows a single sharp peak for nanorings with narrower loop arm width: this peak can be univocally associated to a h/2e periodicity as predicted for optimally doped YBCO. Moreover it is a clear evidence of a uniform vorticity of the order parameter inside the rings, confirming a high degree of homogeneity of our nanostructures. This result gives a boost to further investigations of YBCO nanorings at different dopings within the superconducting dome, where in the underdoped regime a R(B) periodicity different from the conventional h/2e has been predicted.
