  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • DIII-D research advancing the physics basis for optimizing the tokamak approach to fusion energy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 0029-5515 .- 1741-4326. ; 62:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DIII-D physics research addresses critical challenges for the operation of ITER and the next generation of fusion energy devices. This is done through a focus on innovations to provide solutions for high performance long pulse operation, coupled with fundamental plasma physics understanding and model validation, to drive scenario development by integrating high performance core and boundary plasmas. Substantial increases in off-axis current drive efficiency from an innovative top launch system for EC power, and in pressure broadening for Alfven eigenmode control from a co-/counter-I p steerable off-axis neutral beam, all improve the prospects for optimization of future long pulse/steady state high performance tokamak operation. Fundamental studies into the modes that drive the evolution of the pedestal pressure profile and electron vs ion heat flux validate predictive models of pedestal recovery after ELMs. Understanding the physics mechanisms of ELM control and density pumpout by 3D magnetic perturbation fields leads to confident predictions for ITER and future devices. Validated modeling of high-Z shattered pellet injection for disruption mitigation, runaway electron dissipation, and techniques for disruption prediction and avoidance including machine learning, give confidence in handling disruptivity for future devices. For the non-nuclear phase of ITER, two actuators are identified to lower the L-H threshold power in hydrogen plasmas. With this physics understanding and suite of capabilities, a high poloidal beta optimized-core scenario with an internal transport barrier that projects nearly to Q = 10 in ITER at ∼8 MA was coupled to a detached divertor, and a near super H-mode optimized-pedestal scenario with co-I p beam injection was coupled to a radiative divertor. The hybrid core scenario was achieved directly, without the need for anomalous current diffusion, using off-axis current drive actuators. Also, a controller to assess proximity to stability limits and regulate β N in the ITER baseline scenario, based on plasma response to probing 3D fields, was demonstrated. Finally, innovative tokamak operation using a negative triangularity shape showed many attractive features for future pilot plant operation.

  • Toward ultrahigh thermal conductivity graphene films
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2D Materials. - : IOP Publishing. - 2053-1583. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With increasing demands of high-performance and functionality, electronics devices generate a great amount of heat. Thus, efficient heat dissipation is crucially needed. Owing to its extremely good thermal conductivity, graphene is an interesting candidate for this purpose. In this paper, a two-step temperature-annealing process to fabricate ultrahigh thermal conductive graphene assembled films (GFs) is proposed. The thermal conductivity of the obtained GFs was as high as 3826 +/- 47 W m(-1) K-1. Extending the time of high-temperature annealing significantly improved the thermal performance of the GF. Structural analyses confirmed that the high thermal conductivity is caused by the large grain size, defect-free stacking, and high flatness, which are beneficial for phonon transmission in the carbon lattice. The turbostratic stacking degree decreased with increasing heat treatment time. However, the increase in the grain size after long heat treatment had a more pronounced effect on the phonon transfer of the GF than that of turbostratic stacking. The developed GFs show great potential for efficient thermal management in electronics devices.

  • Increasing terrestrial ecosystem carbon release in response to autumn cooling and warming
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Climate Change. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1758-678X .- 1758-6798. ; 12, s. 380-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite overall warming, many regions in the Northern Hemisphere have been cooling in autumn. This cooling resulted in an increasing release of net CO2 2004-2018 as primary production decreased more than respiration in cooling and respiration increased more than production in warming areas. Part of the Northern Hemisphere has experienced widespread autumn cooling during the most recent decades despite overall warming, but how this contrasting temperature change has influenced the ecosystem carbon exchange remains unclear. Here, we show that autumn cooling has occurred over about half of the area north of 25 degrees N since 2004, producing a weak cooling trend over the period 2004-2018. Multiple lines of evidence suggest an increasing net CO2 release in autumn during 2004-2018. In cooling areas, the increasing autumn CO2 release is due to the larger decrease of gross primary productivity (GPP) growth than total ecosystem respiration (TER) growth suppressed by cooling. In the warming areas, TER increased more than GPP because the warming and wetting conditions are more favourable for TER growth than GPP increase. Despite the opposite temperature trends, there has been a systematic increase in ecosystem carbon release across the Northern Hemisphere middle and high latitudes.

  • Disentangling the effects of vapor pressure deficit on northern terrestrial vegetation productivity
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - 2375-2548. ; 9:32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) on plant photosynthesis has long been acknowledged, but large interactions with air temperature (T) and soil moisture (SM) still hinder a complete understanding of the influence of VPD on vegetation production across various climate zones. Here, we found a diverging response of productivity to VPD in the Northern Hemisphere by excluding interactive effects of VPD with T and SM. The interactions between VPD and T/SM not only offset the potential positive impact of warming on vegetation productivity but also amplifies the negative effect of soil drying. Notably, for high-latitude ecosystems, there occurs a pronounced shift in vegetation productivity's response to VPD during the growing season when VPD surpasses a threshold of 3.5 to 4.0 hectopascals. These results yield previously unknown insights into the role of VPD in terrestrial ecosystems and enhance our comprehension of the terrestrial carbon cycle's response to global warming.

  • New fast curing isotropic conductive adhesive for electronic packaging application
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2010 11th International Conference on Electronic Packaging Technology and High Density Packaging, ICEPT-HDP 2010; Xi'an; 16 August 2010 through 19 August 2010. - 9781424481422 ; :Article number 5582446, s. 199-201
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the rapid development of technologies on high density assembly and packaging in electronic industry, isotropic conductive adhesive (ICA) has been paid more and more attention as a potential substitute of solder, due to its advantages of low processing temperature, simple processing conditions and good manufacturability. However, the curing time of most traditional ICA is more than half an hour. The process duration of ICA is 2 or 3 times longer than that of solder. Thus, low efficiencies of energy using and product manufacturing has been one of factors which limits widely application of ICA. Generally, the curing speed of ICA depends on types and amount of curing agent as well as curing temperature. In our previous experiments, the effects of curing temperature and amount of curing agent have been investigated. So, the present work attempts to choose a new kind of curing agent to shorten process duration of ICA. By using new curing agent, the curing duration of ICA could be shortened in 5 minutes with a high curing rate compared with the previous version. In addition, the basic performance including bulk resistivity and viscosity are also investigated in this work. Finally, we present some discussions about the further optimization of performance, for example regarding the ways of achieving better electrical conductivity with lower filler content and improvement of viscosity etc. © 2010 IEEE.

  • Metasurface Enabled On-Chip Generation and Manipulation of Vector Beams from Vertical Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : Wiley. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Metasurface polarization optics that consist of 2D array of birefringent nano-antennas have proven remarkable capabilities to generate and manipulate vectorial fields with subwavelength resolution and high efficiency. Integrating this new type of metasurface with the standard vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) platform enables an ultracompact and powerful solution to control both phase and polarization properties of the laser on a chip, which allows to structure a VCSEL into vector beams with on-demand wavefronts. Here, this concept is demonstrated by directly generating versatile vector beams from commercially available VCSELs through on-chip integration of high-index dielectric metasurfaces. Experimentally, the versatility of the approach for the development of vectorial VCSELs are validated by implementing a variety of functionalities, including directional emission of multibeam with specified polarizations, vectorial holographic display, and vector vortex beams generations. Notably, the proposed vectorial VCSELs integrated with a single layer of beam shaping metasurface bypass the requirements of multiple cascaded optical components, and thus have the potential to promote the advancements of ultracompact, lightweight, and scalable vector beams sources, enriching and expanding the applications of VCSELs in optical communications, laser manipulation and processing, information encryption, and quantum optics.

  • A portable micro glucose sensor based on copper-based nanocomposite structure
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1369-9261 .- 1144-0546. ; 43:20, s. 7806-7813
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Precisely detecting the concentration of glucose in the human body is an attractive way to prevent or treat diabetes. Portable glucose sensors with non-enzymatic catalytic materials have received great attention in recent years. Herein, a facile strategy for fabricating a high-performance electrochemical sensor is proposed. A non-enzymatic three-electrode integrated glucose sensor device based on CuO nano-coral arrays/nanoporous Cu (NCA/NPC) is designed and fabricated. The portable NCA/NPC glucose sensor device exhibits high catalytic activity for glucose. The great performance of the NCA/NPC glucose sensor device derives from the excellent conductivity of the NPC substrate and the high electrocatalytic activity of CuO nano-coral arrays. This device exhibits a high sensitivity of 1621 μA mM -1 cm -2 in the linear range of 0.0005-5.0 mM, low detection limit of 200 nM (S/N = 3), fast response time of 3 s, good anti-interference performance, excellent repeatability and considerable stability for glucose detection. This work will certainly provide an efficient structure and proper catalytic material choices for future non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

  • An overview of carbon nanotubes based interconnects for microelectronic packaging
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 IMAPS Nordic Conference on Microelectronics Packaging, NordPac 2017, Goteborg, Sweden, 18-20 June 2017. - 9781538630556 ; , s. 113-119
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Owing to the great demand in more functions and miniaturization in microelectronic packaging, the dimensions of interconnects has decreased extremely, which has resulted in electrical, thermal, and mechanical reliability issues. To address these issues, carbon nanotube (CNT) has been selected as a promising alternative material for the interconnects in packaging due to its large current density, high thermal conductivity, great flexibility, and low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). In this paper, the development of CNTs based vertical interconnects was reviewed. However, the resistivity of CNTs based interconnects was much higher than that of copper interconnects. Thus, this review focused on the resistivity of CNTs-based interconnects in different fabrication process and pointed out what improves the resistivity. In the future, CNTs-Cu nanocomposite with unique properties could be the suitable material for bumps to reduce the resistivity of CNTs based bumps further.
