  • Fine-grained Entailment: Resources for Greek NLI and Precise Entailment
  • 2022
  • In: Proceedings of the Workshop on Dataset Creation for Lower-Resourced Languages within the 13th Language Resources and Evaluation Conference. - Marseille, France : European Language Resources Association (ELRA). - 9782493814067
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a number of fine-grained resources for Natural Language Inference (NLI). In particular, we present a number of resources and validation methods for Greek NLI and a resource for precise NLI. First, we extend the Greek version of the FraCaS test suite to include examples where the inference is directly linked to the syntactic/morphological properties of Greek. The new resource contains an additional 428 examples, making it in total a dataset of 774 examples. Expert annotators have been used in order to create the additional resource, while extensive validation of the original Greek version of the FraCaS by non-expert and expert subjects is performed. Next, we continue the work initiated by (CITATION), according to which a subset of the RTE problems have been labeled for missing hypotheses and we present a dataset an order of magnitude larger, annotating the whole SuperGlUE/RTE dataset with missing hypotheses. Lastly, we provide a de-dropped version of the Greek XNLI dataset, where the pronouns that are missing due to the pro-drop nature of the language are inserted. We then run some models to see the effect of that insertion and report the results.

  • A Dual-Use Enterprise Context for Vehicle Design and Technology Valuation
  • 2004
  • In: 2004 SAE world congress. - Warrendale, Pa : Society of Automotive Engineers, Incorporated.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Developing a new technology requires decision-makers to understand the technology's implications on an organization's objectives, which depend on user needs targeted by the technology. If these needs are common between two organizations, collaboration could result in more efficient technology development. For hybrid truck design, both commercial manufacturers and the military have similar performance needs. As the new technology penetrates the truck market, the commercial enterprise must quantify how the hybrid's superior fuel efficiency will impact consumer purchasing and, thus, future enterprise profits. The Army is also interested in hybrid technology as it continues its transformation to a more fuel-efficient force. Despite having different objectives, maximizing profit and battlefield performance, respectively, the commercial enterprise and Army can take advantage of their mutual needs. Developing the new technology in a dual-use context allows the Army to leverage the design and production capabilities of the commercial enterprise, while the enterprise increases its hybrid production volume with military trucks during the low demand phase of hybrid market penetration. This article describes the valuation of hybrid technology from both the enterprise and military perspectives using a previously developed enterprise decision model, which utilizes comprehensive vehicle simulation to drive decision-making. The enterprise is represented in a mathematical formulation that simultaneously optimizes initial vehicle design, product pricing, operating costs associated with capacity investment and design decisions, and the value created by the new products. The application of hybrid technology in the medium truck market illustrates the impact of dual-use decision-making on the commercial enterprise and satisfaction of military performance targets.

  • In Search of Meaning and Its Representations for Computational Linguistics
  • 2022
  • In: Proceedings of the 2022 CLASP Conference on (Dis)embodiment, Gothenburg and online 15–16 September 2022 / Simon Dobnik, Julian Grove and Asad Sayeed (eds.). - : Association for Computational Linguistics. - 2002-9764. - 9781955917674
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this paper we examine different meaning representations that are commonly used in different natural language applications today and discuss their limits, both in terms of the aspects of the natural language meaning they are modelling and in terms of the aspects of the application for which they are used.

  • Synchrotron and collisional damping effects on runaway electron distributions
  • 2016
  • In: 58th Annual Meeting of the APS Division of Plasma Physics. ; 61:18, s. CO4.00010 -
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Validated models of runaway electron (RE) dissipation are required to confidently approve safe ITER Q=10 operation. DIII-D experiments using quiescent REs are exploring the importance of synchrotron and collisional damping terms to RE dissipation. New time and energy-resolved measurements of RE bremsstrahlung hard X-ray (HXR) emission reveal stark differences between high and low energy REs as damping terms are varied. Previously reported anomalously high RE dissipation only applies to low energy REs. At high energy (where synchrotron effects are strongest) low synchrotron damping cases reach higher peak RE energy despite weaker particle confinement. Low-energy RE decay is observed concurrently with high-energy RE growth. RE dissipation models predict bump-on-tail distributions whose properties depend on the damping terms. Measured HXR spectra are very broad, as expected for bump-on-tail distributions.
