  • PAIN OUT : An international acute pain registry supporting clinicians in decision making and in quality improvement activities
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Evaluation In Clinical Practice. - : Wiley. - 1356-1294 .- 1365-2753. ; 20:6, s. 1090-1098
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rationale, aims and objectives Management of post-operative pain is unsatisfactory worldwide. An estimated 240 million patients undergo surgery each year. Forty to 60% of these patients report clinically significant pain. Discrepancy exists between availability of evidence-based medicine (EBM)-derived knowledge about management of perioperative pain and increased implementation of related practices versus lack of improvement in patient-reported outcomes (PROs). We aimed to assist health care providers to optimize perioperative pain management by developing and validating a medical registry that measures variability in care, identifies best pain management practices and assists clinicians in decision making. Methods PAIN OUT was established from 2009 to 2012 with funding from the European Commission. It now continues as a self-sustaining, not-for-profit project, targeting health care professionals caring for patients undergoing surgery. Results The growing registry includes data from 40 898 patients, 60 hospitals and 17 countries. Collaborators upload data (demographics, clinical, PROs) from patients undergoing surgery in their hospital/ward into an Internet-based portal. Two modules make use of the data: (1) online, immediate feedback and benchmarking compares PROs across sites while offline analysis permits in-depth analysis; and (2) the case-based clinical decision support system offers practice-based treatment recommendations for individual patients; it is available now as a prototype. The Electronic Knowledge Library provides succinct summaries on perioperative pain management, supporting knowledge transfer and application of EBM. Conclusion PAIN OUT, a large, growing international registry, allows use of 'real-life' data related to management of perioperative pain. Ultimately, comparative analysis through audit, feedback and benchmarking will improve quality of care.

  • Nanocrystal Assemblies : Current Advances and Open Problems
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - 1936-0851. ; 18:23, s. 14791-14840
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We explore the potential of nanocrystals (a term used equivalently to nanoparticles) as building blocks for nanomaterials, and the current advances and open challenges for fundamental science developments and applications. Nanocrystal assemblies are inherently multiscale, and the generation of revolutionary material properties requires a precise understanding of the relationship between structure and function, the former being determined by classical effects and the latter often by quantum effects. With an emphasis on theory and computation, we discuss challenges that hamper current assembly strategies and to what extent nanocrystal assemblies represent thermodynamic equilibrium or kinetically trapped metastable states. We also examine dynamic effects and optimization of assembly protocols. Finally, we discuss promising material functions and examples of their realization with nanocrystal assemblies.

  • The effect of phase angle on crack growth mechanisms under thermo-mechanical fatigue loading
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Fatigue. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0142-1123 .- 1879-3452. ; 135
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current paper describes TMF crack growth behaviour in an advanced nickel-based superalloy. Changes in behaviour are examined which occur as a function of the phase angle between applied stress and temperature. The fractography of the failed specimens reveals changes from transgranular to intergranular growth between high and low phase angle tests as a result of the onset of high temperature damage mechanisms. More targeted testing has also been undertaken to isolate the contributions of these mechanisms, with specific transitions in behaviour becoming clear in 90 degrees diamond cycles, where dynamic crack growth and oxidation strongly interact.

  • Modelling the influence of plasticity induced softening on the low cycle fatigue and crack propagation behaviour of a nickel-based superalloy
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Computational materials science. - : ELSEVIER. - 0927-0256 .- 1879-0801. ; 231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cyclic hysteresis loops generated during high-temperature, isothermal, low-cycle fatigue testing of the nickel-based superalloy RR1000 revealed a gradual decrease in elastic modulus of up to 25 % compared to the initial value in dependence of the accumulated plastic strain. Based on the experimental observations, a material model was developed and implemented within a finite element solver to investigate the effect of degrading stiffness on crack growth laws and crack growth predictions. It was shown that the stress intensity factor diminished by 6 to 8 % and crack growth rates were 14 to 20 % higher when stiffness degradation was accounted for.

  • The prediction of crack propagation in coarse grain RR1000 using a unified modelling approach
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Fatigue. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0142-1123 .- 1879-3452. ; 137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The polycrystalline nickel-base superalloy RR1000 is used as turbine rotor material in Rolls-Royce aero engines and has to withstand a wide variety of load and temperature changes during operation. In order to maximize the potential of the material and to improve component design, it is of great interest to understand, and subsequently be able to accurately model the crack propagation caused by thermo-mechanical fatigue conditions. In this work, experimental data is analysed and used to inform unified modelling approaches in order to predict the crack propagation behaviour of RR1000 under a variety of stress-controlled thermo-mechanical fatigue conditions.

  • Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Reviews Methods Primers. - 2662-8449. ; 3:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) is a popular technique that can track ultrafast coherent and incoherent processes in real time. Since its development in the late 1990s, 2DES has become a powerful tool for investigating ultrafast dynamics in a range of systems, including nanomaterials and optoelectronic devices. This Primer explains the underlying physical principles of 2DES and how it can be applied to study dynamic photophysical processes. The article discusses how to collect, process and analyse data, with a summary of currently available experimental configurations. Common issues and challenges are considered, focusing on the limitations and reproducibility of the technique, finishing with an exploration of potential future advances and applications.

  • An empirical survey on co-simulation : Promising standards, challenges and research needs
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Simulation (San Diego, Calif.). - : Elsevier. - 1569-190X .- 1878-1462. ; 95, s. 148-163
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Co-simulation is a promising approach for the modelling and simulation of complex systems, that makes use of mature simulation tools in the respective domains. It has been applied in various different domains, oftentimes without a comprehensive study of the impact to the simulation results. As a consequence, over the recent years, researchers have set out to understand the essential challenges arising from the application of this technique. This paper complements the existing surveys in that the social and empirical aspects were addressed. More than 50 experts participated in a two-stage Delphi study to determine current challenges, research needs and promising standards and tools. Furthermore, an analysis of the strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats of co-simulation utilizing the analytic hierarchy process resulting in a SWOT-AHP analysis is presented. The empirical results of this study show that experts consider the FMI standard to be the most promising standard for continuous time, discrete event and hybrid cosimulation. The results of the SWOT-AHP analysis indicate that factors related to strengths and opportunities predominate.

  • DevTMF - Towards code of practice for thermo-mechanical fatigue crack growth
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Fatigue. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0142-1123 .- 1879-3452. ; 138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current paper presents work on identification and evaluation of a range of factors influencing accuracy and comparability of data generated by three laboratories carrying out stress-controlled thermo-mechanical fatigue crack growth tests. It addresses crack length measurements, heating methods and temperature measurement techniques. It also provides guidance for pre-cracking and use of different specimen geometries as well as Digital Image Correlation imaging for crack monitoring. The majority of the tests have been carried out on a coarse grain polycrystalline nickel-base superalloy using two phase angles, Out-of-Phase and In-Phase cycles with a triangular waveform and a temperature range of 400-750 degrees C.
