The Metro Project : Final report

- This report compiles the results from the METRO project. The different parts of theproject – design fires, evacuation, integrated fire control, smoke control, extraordinarystrain onconstructions and fire- and rescue operations – are presented separately.The most complicated and expensive part of the project was the performance of thelarge scale fire and explosion tests in the Brunsberg tunnel, where the maximum heatrelease rates measured from the metro wagon was 77 MW.The main results from the project are new recommendations regarding design firesin mass transport systems, identification of key factors for fire and smoke spread in tunnelsand at stations as well as regarding the difficulties for disabled persons to evacuatefrom trains in tunnels, new recommended types of way guiding systems, safer design incase of explosions in trains and evaluation of the fire and rescue services’ possibilitiesand limitations in underground mass transport systems.

- Wireless sensors and networks are used only occasionally in current control loops in the process industry. With rapid developments in embedded and highperformance computing, wireless communication, and cloud technology, drastic changes in the architecture and operation of industrial automation systems seem more likely than ever. These changes are driven by ever-growing demands on production quality and flexibility. However, as discussed in "Summary," there are several research obstacles to overcome. The radio communication environment in the process industry is often troublesome, as the environment is frequently cluttered with large metal objects, moving machines and vehicles, and processes emitting radio disturbances [1], [2]. The successful deployment of a wireless control system in such an environment requires careful design of communication links and network protocols as well as robust and reconfigurable control algorithms.

- This conceptual paper presents a Living Lab model of how university, society and organisation may strengthen the co-creation capacity on regional and international level to improve quality in higher education. Our conclusions are that successful co-creation between universities and society/organizations is built on mutual contribution, knowledge sharing as well as engagement from all involved. Here, living lab methods can help improve quality. Further, from a university perspective, a challenge is to keep the engagement in the project from all involved, and to assure an equal status between stakeholders. This calls for a skill in how to conduct project in co-creation with several partners. A skill that has to be taught to students as well as to teachers and researchers.

- This dissertation is a study of a relatively new teacher function in nurse education, a teacher function that can be called clinical teacher, link lecturer, link teacher or lecturer involved in practice. The study departs from a constructivist perspective and the aim is to study the introduction, performance and regulation of this teacher function. The material consists of internationally and nationally published research 1978-2009, reports from the authorities, job ads for clinical teachers, job descriptions and contracts, archive material, evaluation studies, professional journals, texts on the Internet and 15 interviews with clinical teachers in Sweden. Using discourse analysis this material is studied in terms of interpretive repertoires, subject positions and ideological dilemmas. The primary focus of this dissertation concerns what problems the new teacher function is supposed to solve, how the problem should be solved, the effects of the chosen solutions and what´s staged, challenged and reproduced. Secondly, this dissertation highlights what categories of teachers are required and in demand for the new teacher function, how the teachers themselves manage their function and how the teacher function is maintained and challenged. The analysis identifies and highlights current interpretive repertoire, teachers possible subject positions and ideological dilemmas and how they are governed and challenged in the teaching function.

- Industry 4.0 brings several technologies that might be useful for manufacturers to become more competitive. One of these technologies is robots in collaborative environments (RCE), which operate fenceless together with the operators. The interest of these robots in the manufacturing sector has been getting more attention recently. Nevertheless, manufacturers should determine their organization's readiness for implementing RCE successfully. Therefore, this paper presents results from a case study conducted at a manufacturing company in Sweden. The case study approach allowed for insights into how manufacturers can approach RCE organizational readiness. The investigated case company was in the process of acquiring a robot in a collaborative environment. The resulting list of critical factors contains aspects concerning four areas to support organizational readiness for RCE, namely, communication, knowledge, organizational, and resistance. By addressing the critical factors presented in the list, manufacturers can identify critical organizational readiness aspects when implementing RCE.

Exploring Quality Challenges and the Validity of Excellence Models

- Purpose: The purpose is to identify and explore important quality-related challenges facing organizations, and how current excellence models incorporate these challenges.Methodology: The article is based on a Delphi study in Swedish organizations, 49 challenges were generated and ranked according to importance. The top 10 ranked challenges were compared to the principles of four excellence models.Findings: The excellence models seem to still be relevant since their content matches many of the challenges identified. The MBNQA and the SIQ models were found to have the most comprehensive coverage, while the ISO model had limited coverage.Research Limitations/Implications: Three areas for further research were identified: 1) how QM can evolve in different contexts with varying needs in terms of adaptive and explorative capabilities, 2) the interfaces of QM and sustainability, and ways to understand how customers and stakeholders can be active contributors to improvements and 3) the roles of the owners and board of directors in QM, and how to organize and distribute responsibilities of the QM work.Practical and Social Implications: Three important challenges could be addressed in upcoming revisions of excellence models: 1) making QM a strategic issue for company owners; 2) involving customers in the improvement activities; and 3) developing processes that are robust, while still easily adaptable.Originality/Value: The Delphi study has identified upcoming challenges in the QM area based on input from 188 quality professionals.

- Purpose – Strategic changes in an organization will face challenges not only related to the changes as suchbut also with regard to how the vision of the future is interpreted and understood by the organization.Visual management is a field of research that could contribute to change management research as a meansto facilitate management of the dynamics in a change process and to facilitate the process ofcommunication. The purpose of this paper is to problematize episodic change processes with regard tocommunication and to contribute with a proposed model on how to facilitate dynamic strategic changemanagement using visual management.Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses an interdisciplinary approach by linking changemanagement literature to visual communication to be used for visual management.Findings – A proposed model presents how a dynamic episodic change process can be managed in terms ofvisual management, potential pitfalls to avoid, and what ambidextrous capabilities are needed throughout thecomplete episodic change.Research limitations/implications – The proposed model is still yet theoretical, based on a literaturereview of dynamic change management and visual communication. Future research will validate the model inpractice to confirm its robustness.Practical implications – An implementation of visual management in Kotter’s (1995) eight steps on how tostrategically manage change in combination with theories on ambidexterity and episodic change is suggested.Originality/value – The paper contributes to how visual management can support change management bycombining visual communication and change management.Keywords Quality management, Change management, Strategic planning, Operations management,Visual management, Visual

- From its inception, the field of quality management (QM) has been characterised by practice-driven development. Although QM has reached maturity as a field of research based on empirical enquiry, its practitioners still struggle to adapt QM implementations to reap their benefits. This study aims to identify their challenges to better understand how contemporary QM research addresses them. We propose approaches to bridge the potential relevance gaps between research and practice. A Delphi study of QM practitioners in Swedish private and public organisations, several of which operate globally, generated 49 challenges. An exploratory factor analysis was performed to cluster these challenges into themes, and the literature was reviewed to investigate how each theme has been addressed in QM research. The empirical investigation identified three themes related to future QM challenges—organisations’ adaptability to rapid changes in the business environment, quality as a strategic concern for business owners, and managerial ownership of quality. By analysing these challenges, six propositions for future research were proposed to reduce potential relevance gaps. Future research should focus on how to make QM a strategic concern for owners, and explore how it can contribute to organisational ambidexterity and adaptability. Research should also determine how context influences the way QM is applied, and investigate how it can improve organisational learning and innovation. Finally, research should indicate how top managers can adopt the responsibilities of quality managers, and explore the ways the principal values of QM can be better integrated into organisations.

Intelligent Wireless Body Area Network System for Human Motion Analysis

- Human motion analysis provides several important applications. Examples are fall risk assessment, sports biomechanics, physical activity monitoring and rehabilitation. This work in progress paper proposes an intelligent wireless body area network system for motion and gait symmetry analysis. A Bluetooth network with accelerometers, gyroscopes and in-shoe force sensing resistors gathers data and sends it to a web server after intelligent pre-processing and filtering. The system is flexible and adaptable for different use cases including combinations of gait analysis, gait symmetry and pressure measurements between foot and shoe.
