  • Stress biology and immunology in Nephrops norvegicus
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The ecology and biology of Nephrops norvegicus. - Amsterdam : Academic Press. ; , s. 149-200
  • Bokkapitel (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus lives at low-light depths, in muddy substrata of high organic content where water salinities are high and fluctuations in temperature are moderate. In this environment, the lobsters are naturally exposed to a number of potential stressors, many of them as a result of the surficial breakdown of organic material in the sediment. This process (early diagenesis) creates a heterogeneous environment with temporal and spatial fluctuations in a number of compounds such as oxygen, ammonia, metals, and hydrogen sulphide. In addition to this, there are anthropogenically generated stressors, such as human-induced climate change (resulting in elevated temperature and ocean acidification), pollution and fishing. The lobsters are thus exposed to several stressors, which are strongly linked to the habitat in which the animals live. Here, the capacity of Nephrops to deal with these stressors is summarised. Eutrophication-induced hypoxia and subsequent metal remobilisation from the sediment is a well-documented effect found in some wild Nephrops populations. Compared to many other crustacean species, Nephrops is well adapted to tolerate periods of hypoxia, but prolonged or severe hypoxia, beyond their tolerance level, is common in some areas. When the oxygen concentration in the environment decreases, the bioavailability of redox-sensitive metals such as manganese increases. Manganese is an essential metal, which, taken up in excess, has a toxic effect on several internal systems such as chemosensitivity, nerve transmission and immune defence. Since sediment contains high concentrations of metals in comparison to sea water, lobsters may accumulate both essential and non-essential metals. Different metals have different target tissues, though the hepatopancreas, in general, accumulates high concentrations of most metals. The future scenario of increasing anthropogenic influences on Nephrops habitats may have adverse effects on the fitness of the animals.

  • On the bijectivity of thin-plate splines
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Analysis for Science, Engineering and Beyond, The Tribute Workshop in Honour of Gunnar Sparr held in Lund, May 8-9, 2008. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 9783642202360 - 9783642202353 ; 6, s. 93-141
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thin-plate spline (TPS) has been widely used in a number of areas such as image warping, shape analysis and scattered data interpolation. Introduced by Bookstein (IEEE Trans. Pattern Anal. Mach. Intell. 11(6):567–585 1989), it is a natural interpolating function in two dimensions, parameterized by a finite number of landmarks. However, even though the thin-plate spline has a very intuitive interpretation as well as an elegant mathematical formulation, it has no inherent restriction to prevent folding, i.e. a non-bijective interpolating function. In this chapter we discuss some of the properties of the set of parameterizations that form bijective thin-plate splines, such as convexity and boundness. Methods for finding sufficient as well as necessary conditions for bijectivity are also presented. The methods are used in two settings (a) to register two images using thin-plate spline deformations, while ensuring bijectivity and (b) group-wise registration of a set of images, while enforcing bijectivity constraints.

  • Acoustic impact on decoding of semantic emotions
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Speaker classification II. - Berlin : Springer. - 9783540741213 ; , s. 57-69
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper examines the interaction between the emotion indicated by the content of an utternance and the emotion indicated by the acoustic of an utterance, and considers whether a speaker can hide their emotional state by acting an emotion even though being semantically honest. Three female and two male speakers of Swedish were recorded saying the sentences “Jag har vunnit en miljon pa° lotto” (I have won a million on the lottery), “Det finns böcker i bokhyllan” (There are books on the bookshelf) and “Min mamma har just dött” (my mother just died) as if they were happy, neutral (indifferent), angry or sad. Thirty-nine experimental participants (19 female and 20 male) heard 60 randomly selected stimuli randomly coupled with the question “Do you consider this speaker to be emotionally X?”, where X could be angry, happy, neutral or sad. They were asked to respond yes or no; the listeners’ responses and reaction times were collected. The results show that semantic cues to emotion play little role in the decoding process. Only when there are few specific acoustic cues to an emotion do semantic cues come into play. However, longer reaction times for the stimuli containing mismatched acoustic and semantic cues indicate that the semantic cues to emotion are processed even if they impact little on the perceived emotion.

  • Theory of diluted magnetic semiconductors
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Advanced Functional Materials. - : Elsevier. - 9780444536815 ; , s. 1-19
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to understand and manipulate the properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors, a precise knowledge of interactions in these systems should be available. In this chapter, we review ab initio studies on DMS, in particular, calculations of ordering temperatures by Monte Carlo simulations. We argue why we do not expect large values of ordering temperatures from the point of view of dilute spin system, short ranged magnetic exchange interactions and magnetic percolation. Also, we show results of atomistic spin dynamics using Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equations for Mn-doped GaAs. The effects of strong electron correlation on the electronic and magnetic structure are demonstrated by dynamical mean field theory.
