  • Autotolerant ceruloplasmin based biocathodes for implanted biological power sources
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Bioelectrochemistry. - : Elsevier. - 1567-5394 .- 1878-562X. ; 140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-performance autotolerant bioelectrodes should be ideally suited to design implantable bioelectronic devices. Because of its high redox potential and ability to reduce oxygen directly to water, human ceruloplasmin, HCp, the only blue multicopper oxidase present in human plasma, appears to be the ultimate biocatalyst for oxygen biosensors and also biocathodes in biological power sources. In comparison to fungal and plant blue multicopper oxidases, e.g. Myrothecium verrucaria bilirubin oxidase and Rhus vernicifera laccase, respectively, the inflammatory response to HCp in human blood is significantly reduced. Partial purification of HCp allowed to preserve the native conformation of the enzyme and its biocatalytic activity. Therefore, electrochemical studies were carried out with the partially purified enzyme immobilised on nanostructured graphite electrodes at physiological pH and temperature. Amperometric investigations revealed low reductive current densities, i.e. about 1.65 µA cm−2 in oxygenated electrolyte and in the absence of any mediator, demonstrating nevertheless direct electron transfer based O2 bioelectroreduction by HCp for the first time. The reductive current density obtained in the mediated system was about 12 µA cm−2. Even though the inflammatory response of HCp is diminished in human blood, inadequate bioelectrocatalytic performance hinders its use as a cathodic bioelement in a biofuel cell.

  • Modeling of C IV pumped fluorescence of Fe II in symbiotic stars
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Astronomy & Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 477:1, s. 255-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims. We describe how the C IV lambda 1548.18 line pumps the 1548.20 and 1548.41 angstrom channels of Fe II in symbiotic stars through the process known as photo-ionization by accidental resonance (PAR). We describe where and why Fe II fluorescence arises in symbiotic stars and whether the Fe II lambda 1548.41 channel can only be activated when there is a white-dwarf wind present in the system. Further, we aim to show how an analysis of the PAR-pumped lines helps to understand the phyisical conditions that they manifest. Methods. We calculate intensities of the C IV-pumped Fe II fluorescence lines in symbiotic stars, corresponding to the y(4)H(11/)2 and w(2)D(3/2) levels, based on a simple geometrical model of the emitting regions. We apply the model to seven symbiotic stars, known to have Fe II fluorescence lines pumped by C IV in their spectra. We compare the predicted intensities to the observed intensities of the selected symbiotic stars. Results. We find that we can reproduce the observed fluorescence intensities of the seven symbiotic stars in our sample, using parameters that are consistent with their known properties. We show that PAR-produced lines can be used as a diagnostic tool to derive important physical parameters of a stellar system. We suggest that the detection of Fe II lines corresponding to the w2D3/2 level in certain symbiotic stars provide evidence of hot shells expanding with velocities of at least hundreds km s(-1) in those systems.

  • Effect of educational intervention on adoption of new endodontic technology by general dental practitioners : a questionnaire survey
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Endodontic Journal. - : Wiley. - 0143-2885 .- 1365-2591. ; 42:4, s. 313-321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To survey the clinical endodontic protocols of general dental practitioners (GDPs) in public dental clinics and to assess the effect of an educational intervention on the adoption of a nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) rotary system. General dental practitioners in a Swedish Intervention County (IC), underwent an educational programme in endodontics. A follow-up questionnaire was posted to 98 GDPs in the IC and to 97 GDPs in a Control County (CC), where no specific training had been provided. The questionnaire concerned demographics, clinical endodontic protocols and instrumentation techniques. The response rate to the questionnaire was 87%. More than 90% of all GDPs reported they always or generally used rubber dam, determined working length, used the canal irrigant 0.5% buffered NaOCl and calcium hydroxide as an interappointment dressing. Two of three GDPs reported, they generally or always informed the patient of the prognosis. Every second GDP reported routines for postoperative recall and follow-up. The Ni-Ti rotary technique was reported to be completely adopted by 77% of the GDPs in the IC, significantly higher than in the CC (6%), P < 0.001. In the IC 79% of the GDPs reported they completed instrumentation in one treatment session, compared with only 32% in the CC, P < 0.001. The 'single-cone' mode of canal filling was reported to be significantly more frequent amongst GDPs in the IC, P < 0.001. General dental practitioners in both counties reported using contemporary clinical endodontic protocols. GDPs who had undergone an educational programme in Ni-Ti rotary instrumentation reported they had successfully integrated the technique into daily clinical practice.

  • Analgesic efficacy with rapidly absorbed ibuprofen sodium dihydrate in postsurgical dental pain : results from the randomized QUIKK trial
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International journal of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics. - : Dustri-Verlag Dr. Karl Feistle GmbH & Co. KG. - 0946-1965. ; 49:12, s. 722-729
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the onset of analgesic effect for a new formulation of ibuprofen sodium dihydrate versus conventional ibuprofen (ibuprofen acid). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, crossover trial, patients requiring surgical removal of two impacted or partially impacted mandibular third molars received: ibuprofen sodium dihydrate 400 mg plus conventional ibuprofen placebo (Group 1); or conventional ibuprofen 400 mg plus ibuprofen sodium dihydrate placebo (Group 2) following the first surgery. Patients were then crossed over to the alternative treatment. RESULTS: 72 patients were enrolled in Group 1 and 72 patients in Group 2. Ibuprofen sodium dihydrate produced faster initial pain relief than conventional ibuprofen as assessed by time to first pain relief (24.6 vs. 30.5 minutes; p = 0.004), and patient-assessed pain relief at 15 minutes ("some" to "complete" pain relief: 43% vs. 29%; p < 0.001) and 30 minutes (82% vs. 63%; p < 0.001) and pain intensity at 30 minutes (p < 0.001). Substantial pain relief with ibuprofen sodium dihydrate was twice that of conventional ibuprofen at 30 minutes (11% vs. 5%; not significant); 29% and 33% of patients did not reach substantial pain relief at 120 minutes. There were no adverse events leading to treatment discontinuation and only two serious adverse events (oral abscess and facial paresis with conventional ibuprofen) considered unrelated to treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Ibuprofen sodium dihydrate was as effective as conventional ibuprofen, but had a faster onset of initial pain relief and significantly reduced pain intensity within the first 30 minutes after administration, providing rapid clinically meaningful pain relief for patients.
