    • The VEDLIoT project targets the development of energy-efficient Deep Learning for distributed AIoT applications. A holistic approach is used to optimize algorithms while also dealing with safety and security challenges. The approach is based on a modular and scalable cognitive IoT hardware platform. Using modular microserver technology enables the user to configure the hardware to satisfy a wide range of applications. VEDLIoT offers a complete design flow for Next-Generation IoT devices required for collaboratively solving complex Deep Learning applications across distributed systems. The methods are tested on various use-cases ranging from Smart Home to Automotive and Industrial IoT appliances. VEDLIoT is an H2020 EU project which started in November 2020. It is currently in an intermediate stage with the first results available.

    • Ichthyosaurs are extinct marine reptiles that display a notable external similarity to modern toothed whales. Here we show that this resemblance is more than skin deep. We apply a multidisciplinary experimental approach to characterize the cellular and molecular composition of integumental tissues in an exceptionally preserved specimen of the Early Jurassic ichthyosaur Stenopterygius. Our analyses recovered still-flexible remnants of the original scaleless skin, which comprises morphologically distinct epidermal and dermal layers. These are underlain by insulating blubber that would have augmented streamlining, buoyancy and homeothermy. Additionally, we identify endogenous proteinaceous and lipid constituents, together with keratinocytes and branched melanophores that contain eumelanin pigment. Distributional variation of melanophores across the body suggests countershading, possibly enhanced by physiological adjustments of colour to enable photoprotection, concealment and/or thermoregulation. Convergence of ichthyosaurs with extant marine amniotes thus extends to the ultrastructural and molecular levels, reflecting the omnipresent constraints of their shared adaptation to pelagic life.

    • A wide gap exists between the state of the art in developing Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) software and current practices concerning the design, execution, and maintenance of business processes. WSN software is most often developed based on low-level OS abstractions, whereas business process development leverages high-level languages and tools. This state of affairs places WSNs at the fringe of industry. The makeSense system addresses this problem by simplifying the integration of WSNs into business processes. Developers use BPMN models extended with WSN-specific constructs to specify the application behavior across both traditional business process execution environments and the WSN itself, which is to be equipped with application-specific software. We compile these models into a high-level intermediate language-Also directly usable by WSN developers-And then into OS-specific deployment-ready binaries. Key to this process is the notion of meta-Abstraction, which we define to capture fundamental patterns of interaction with and within the WSN. The concrete realization of meta-Abstractions is application-specific; developers tailor the system configuration by selecting concrete abstractions out of the existing codebase or by providing their own. Our evaluation of makeSense shows that i) users perceive our approach as a significant advance over the state of the art, providing evidence of the increased developer productivity when using makeSense; ii) in large-scale simulations, our prototype exhibits an acceptable system overhead and good scaling properties, demonstrating the general applicability of makeSense; and, iii) our prototype-including the complete tool-chain and underlying system support-sustains a real-world deployment where estimates by domain specialists indicate the potential for drastic reductions in the total cost of ownership compared to wired and conventional WSN-based solutions.

    • Phosphatidylcholine containing a long chain polyunsaturated acyl group at the 2-position has been prepared by phospholipase A 2 catalyzed esterification of lysophosphatidylcholine with polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA (C20:5) or DHA (C22:6). Preliminary studies showed that the other fatty acids, such as lauric acid (C12), palmitic acid (C16), stearic acid (C18) and linoleic acid (C18:2), were also incorporated. To our knowledge, phospholipase A 2 catalyzed condensation reactions have not been reported in the literature before. The reactions were performed in sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)-sulfosuccinate-based microemulsions containing small amounts of water. Synthesis of the same phospholipid by transesterification of phosphatidylcholine with the polyunsaturated acids in microemulsion failed; however, enzymatic hydrolysis to lysophosphatidylcholine was facile, quantitative conversion from phosphatidylcholine being attained after 16 hr reaction time. An additional observation was that, unlike enzymatic hydrolysis of phospholipids, the condensation reaction catalyzed by phospholipase A 2 was totally independent of the presence of calcium. © 1990 AOCS Press.

  • Denatured hemoproteins as catalysts in lipid oxidation

    • Purified catalase and peroxidase were denatured by heat, acid and urea. Denaturation resulted in up to 22-fold increase in nonenzymatic lipid oxidation activity concomitant with loss of enzymatic activity. It is proposed that the increased nonenzymatic activity is due to increased exposure of the heme group. Acid-splitting of the hemoproteins into apoprotein and hemin had the greatest influence on both of the catalytic activities and recombination reversed the effect. Urea-denatured hemoprotein possessed increased nonenzymatic activity due to increased exposure of the protein-bound heme, however, peroxidase increased less than catalase which is consistent with the fact that peroxidase is the more heat stable enzyme. Nonenzymatic activity of the heat denatured hemoproteins was maximum when catalase was treated at 90 C for 2 min and peroxidase at 100 to 125 C for 5 to 30 min. © 1971 AOCS.

    • 1. 1. Lipoxygenase (linoleate:oxygen oxidoreductase, EC 1.13.1.13.) from peas was extensively purified by precipitation with (NH4)2SO4, gel filtration with Sephadex G-150, and ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. 2. 2. The final enzyme preparation proved homogeneous by ultracentrifugation of a 0.6% protein solution (pH 7.0) but separated into two main and narrow fractions on isoelectric focusing, pI values 5.80-5.82. 3. 3. The molecular weight, as calculated on the basis of amino acid analysis and ultracentrifugation, was found to be 72 000 and 67 000, respectively. 4. 4. Pea lipoxygenase contains 7 half-cystine residues, different from the soybean enzyme which has been reported to contain none. © 1970.
