  • Normative Modeling of Brain Morphometry Across the Lifespan Using CentileBrain: Algorithm Benchmarking and Model Optimization

    • Background: Normative modeling is a statistical approach to quantify the degree to which a particular individual-level measure deviates from the pattern observed in a normative reference population. When applied to human brain morphometric measures it has the potential to inform about the significance of normative deviations for health and disease. Normative models can be implemented using a variety of algorithms that have not been systematically appraised. Methods: To address this gap, eight algorithms were compared in terms of performance and computational efficiency using brain regional morphometric data from 37,407 healthy individuals (53% female; aged 3-90 years) collated from 87 international MRI datasets. Performance was assessed with the mean absolute error (MAE) and computational efficiency was inferred from central processing unit (CPU) time. The algorithms evaluated were Ordinary Least Squares Regression (OLSR), Bayesian Linear Regression (BLR), Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS), Parametric Lambda, Mu, Sigma (LMS), Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), Warped Bayesian Linear Regression (WBLG), Hierarchical Bayesian Regression (HBR), and Multivariable Fractional Polynomial Regression (MFPR). Model optimization involved testing nine covariate combinations pertaining to acquisition features, parcellation software versions, and global neuroimaging measures (i.e., total intracranial volume, mean cortical thickness, and mean cortical surface area). Findings: Statistical comparisons across models at PFDR<0.05 indicated that the MFPR-derived sex- and region-specific models with nonlinear polynomials for age and linear effects of global measures had superior predictive accuracy; the range of the MAE of the models of regional subcortical volumes was 70-520 mm3 and the corresponding ranges for regional cortical thickness and regional cortical surface area were 0.09-0.26 mm and 24-560 mm2, respectively. The MFPR-derived models were also computationally more efficient with a CPU time below one second compared to a range of 2 seconds to 60 minutes for the other algorithms. The performance of all sex- and region-specific MFPR models plateaued at sample sizes exceeding 3,000 and showed comparable MAEs across distinct 10-year age-bins covering the human lifespan. Interpretation: These results provide an empirically benchmarked framework for normative modeling of brain morphometry that is useful for interpreting prior literature and supporting future study designs.   • The scenario-based variations and causes of future surface soil moisture across China in the twenty-first century

    • Surface soil moisture (SSM) is a key factor for water and heat exchanges between land surface and the atmosphere. It is also important to water resources, agriculture, and ecosystems. In the backdrop of global warming, SSM variations and potential causes are not well-known at regional scales. Based on soil moisture (SM) data from GLDAS-Noah and 16 global climate models (GCMs) selected from 25 GCMs in CMIP5, we analyzed spatial distribution and temporal changes of SSM in China and quantified fractional contributions of four meteorological factors to the SSM variations. The selected models have the same direction of historic trends in SSM during 1981-2005 as those in the GLDAS SSM data which were also further used to calibrate the trends simulated by the 16 GCMs. Based on the calibration results for the 16 GCMs, future SSMs for nine regions were analyzed in mainland China under four Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emission scenarios. No significant changes were identified in SSM across most regions of mainland China under RCP2.6 scenario. However, there is a general wetting tendency in the arid regions and drying tendency across the humid regions under all the scenarios except RCP2.6. In general, the higher the global temperature raises, the more grids with significant increase or significant decrease in SSM. These findings contradicted prevailing view that wet regions get wetter and dry regions get drier. Attribution analysis indicates that precipitation acts as the major driver for SSM variations and contributes up to 43.4% of SSM variations across China. These results provide new insights into future SSM response to climate warming and a scientific basis to mitigation and adaptation works related to SSM in the future.

    • Fracture in plain concrete starts normally as tensile fracture, whereby a damage zone forms perpendicular to the principal tensile stress direction. If this stress direction is maintained when the deformation within the damage zone increases, the material behaviour in the damage zone can be described by a simple stress-deformation curve. The design of a test equipment for the measurement of the material properties within a damage zone with combined tension and shear deformations is described. The design of the equipment is based on a theoretical analysis, which shows the importance of a sufficient stiffness in order to prevent rotations caused by instability. In order to fulfill the requirements on stiffness, a certain rotation in the damage zone has been accepted in the design.
