- Experimenting is fundamental to the training process of all scientists and engineers. While experiments have been traditionally done inside laboratories, the emergence of Information and Communication Technologies added two alternatives accessible anytime, anywhere. These two alternatives are known as virtual and remote laboratories and are sometimes indistinguishably referred as online laboratories. Similarly to other instructional technologies, virtual and remote laboratories require some effort from teachers in integrating them into curricula, taking into consideration several factors that affect their adoption (i.e., cost) and their educational effectiveness (i.e., benefit). This chapter analyzes these two dimensions and sustains the case where only through international cooperation it is possible to serve the large number of teachers and students involved in engineering education. It presents an example in the area of electrical and electronics engineering, based on a remote laboratory named Virtual Instruments System in Reality, and it then describes how a number of European and Latin American institutions have been cooperating under the scope of an Erasmus+ project, for spreading its use in Brazil and Argentina.

- The island of Tenerife displays contrasted densities of population, from the densely occupied coastal zones (including tourist resorts, airport, energy facilities, etc.) to the sparsely populated forests and mountainous highlands, where most of the recent volcanic events are located. Considering the low frequency of historical eruptions (compared to Hawaii or Reunion Island for example), the assessment of geological hazards must also rely on the analysis and interpretation of prehistorical events, going back to at least the Late Quaternary. In this chapter, we review the hazards related to Teide’s volcanism, but also those from increased seismicity and from slope instability. We discuss the origin of low magnitude earthquakes, and particularly the 2004 episode of unrest. New estimates on cumulative volumes for resurfacing by lava flows during the last few thousand years are provided to serve as a tool for building a lava flow hazard map of Tenerife. Hazards related to explosive activity are also considered and although possible, with phreatomagmatic eruptions being the most likely style anticipated, explosive events are of relatively low probability at Teide in the near future.

- We present the theory and the analytical and numerical solution for the calculation of the oscillator and rotatory strengths of molecular systems using a state-specific formalism. For a start, this is done in the context of the exact semiclassical light–matter interaction in association with electronic wave functions expanded in a Gaussian basis. The reader is guided through the standard approximations of the field, e.g., the use of commutators, truncation of Taylor expansions, and the implications of these are discussed in parallel. Expressions for the isotropically averaged values are derived, recovering the isotropic oscillator strength in terms of the transition electric-dipole moment, and the isotropic rotatory strength in terms of the transition electric-dipole and magnetic-dipole moments. This chapter gives a detailed description of the computation of the integrals over the plane wave in association with Gaussian one-particle basis sets. Finally, a brief description is given of how the computed oscillator and rotatory strengths are related to the quantities commonly used and discussed in experimental studies.
