  • Experimental and computational study of the injection of antiprotons into a positron plasma for antihydrogen production
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physics of Plasmas. - 1070-664X .- 1089-7674. ; 20:4, s. 043510-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the goals of synthesizing and trapping antihydrogen is to study the validity of charge-parity-time symmetry through precision spectroscopy on the anti-atoms, but the trapping yield achieved in recent experiments must be significantly improved before this can be realized. Antihydrogen atoms are commonly produced by mixing antiprotons and positrons stored in a nested Penning-Malmberg trap, which was achieved in ALPHA by an autoresonant excitation of the antiprotons, injecting them into the positron plasma. In this work, a hybrid numerical model is developed to simulate antiproton and positron dynamics during the mixing process. The simulation is benchmarked against other numerical and analytic models, as well as experimental measurements. The autoresonant injection scheme and an alternative scheme are compared numerically over a range of plasma parameters which can be reached in current and upcoming antihydrogen experiments, and the latter scheme is seen to offer significant improvement in trapping yield as the number of available antiprotons increases.

  • Composition dependent properties of Fe3Si films grown on GaAs(113)A substrates
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 105:7, s. 07B104-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Structural, electrical, and magnetic properties of Fe3Si/GaAs(113)A hybrid structures are studied, dependent on the layer composition varying from 15 to 26 at. % Si. The presence of superlattice reflections in x-ray diffraction and lower resistivity confirms the long-range atomic ordering in the stoichiometric Fe3Si films, reflecting the D0(3) crystal structure. The observed atomic ordering is also found to influence the sign and magnitude of the antisymmetric component of the planar Hall effect observed in this orientation. However a finite disorder is observed even in nearly stoichiometric samples.

  • On the Validations of the Asymptotic Matching Conjectures
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of statistical physics. - : Springer. - 0022-4715 .- 1572-9613. ; 133:3, s. 513-533

    • In this paper we review the asymptotic matching conjectures for r-regular bipartite graphs, and their connections in estimating the monomer-dimer entropies in d-dimensional integer lattice and Bethe lattices. We prove new rigorous upper and lower bounds for the monomer-dimer entropies, which support these conjectures. We describe a general construction of infinite families of r-regular tori graphs and give algorithms for computing the monomer-dimer entropy of density p, for any p is an element of[0,1], for these graphs. Finally we use tori graphs to test the asymptotic matching conjectures for certain infinite r-regular bipartite graphs.

  • Mycobacterium tuberculosis dysregulates MMP/TIMP balance to drive rapid cavitation and unrestrained bacterial proliferation.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pathology. - 0022-3417 .- 1096-9896. ; 235:3, s. 431-444

    • Active tuberculosis (TB) often presents with advanced pulmonary disease, including irreversible lung damage and cavities. Cavitary pathology contributes to antibiotic failure, transmission, morbidity and mortality. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), in particular MMP-1 are implicated in TB pathogenesis. We explored the mechanisms relating MMP/TIMP imbalance to cavity formation in a modified rabbit model of cavitary TB. Our model results in consistent progression of consolidation to human-like cavities (100% by day 28) with resultant bacillary burdens (>10(7) CFU/g) far greater than those found in matched granulomatous tissue (10(5) CFU/g). Using a novel, breath-hold computerized tomography scanning and image analysis protocol. We show that cavities develop rapidly from areas of densely consolidated tissue. Radiological change correlated with a decrease in functional lung tissue as estimated by changes in lung density during controlled pulmonary expansion (R(2) =0.6356, p < 0.0001). We demonstrated that the expression of interstitial collagenase (MMP-1) is specifically greater in cavitary compared to granulomatous lesions (p < 0.01), and that TIMP-3 significantly decreases at the cavity surface. Our findings demonstrate that an MMP-1/TIMP imbalance, is associated with the progression of consolidated regions to cavities containing very high bacterial burdens. Our model provided mechanistic insight, correlating with human disease at the pathological, microbiological and molecular levels,. It also provides a strategy to investigate therapeutics in the context of complex TB pathology. We used these findings to predict a MMP/TIMP balance in active TB; and confirmed this in human plasma, revealing the potential of MMP/TIMP levels as key components of a diagnostic matrix aimed at distinguishing active from latent TB (PPV=92.9%; 95%CI 66.1-99.8%, NPV=85.6%; 95%CI 77.0-91.9%).

  • Assessment of Eutrophication Abatement Scenarios for the Baltic Sea by Multi-Model Ensemble Simulations.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Marine Science. - 2296-7745. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To assess the impact of the implementation of the Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) on the future environmental status of the Baltic Sea, available uncoordinated multi-model ensemble simulations for the Baltic Sea region for the twenty-first century were analyzed. The scenario simulations were driven by regionalized global general circulation model (GCM) data using several regional climate system models and forced by various future greenhouse gas emission and air- and river-borne nutrient load scenarios following either reference conditions or the BSAP. To estimate uncertainties in projections, the largest ever multi-model ensemble for the Baltic Sea comprising 58 transient simulations for the twenty-first century was assessed. Data from already existing simulations from different projects including regionalized GCM simulations of the third and fourth assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change based on the corresponding Coupled Model Intercomparison Projects, CMIP3 and CMIP5, were collected. Various strategies to weigh the ensemble members were tested and the results for ensemble mean changes between future and present climates are shown to be robust with respect to the chosen metric. Although (1) the model simulations during the historical period are of different quality and (2) the assumptions on nutrient load levels during present and future periods differ between models considerably, the ensemble mean changes in biogeochemical variables in the Baltic proper with respect to nutrient load reductions are similar between the entire ensemble and a subset consisting only of the most reliable simulations. Despite the large spread in projections, the implementation of the BSAP will lead to a significant improvement of the environmental status of the Baltic Sea according to both weighted and unweighted ensembles. The results emphasize the need for investigating ensembles with many members and rigorous assessments of models’ performance.
