  • What Is the Problem of Plagiarism Represented to Be? Plagiarism as Matters of Language in Higher Education Policy and Practice
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Language Matters in Higher Education Contexts: Policy and Practice. - Leiden / Boston : Brill. - 9789004507920 ; , s. 130-150
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Policy on plagiarism has emerged as a powerful tool for universities to deal with a wide range of problems related to internationalisation and rapid IT developments. How do such policies conceptualise plagiarism? What kind of solutions do they promote? What consequences do they imply for higher education? Here, we scrutinise three policy documents aimed at preventing plagiarism in the Swedish context. Using a policy-as-discourse-approach and Bacchi’s (2009) analytical strategy What is the problem represented to be? (WPR), we suggest that policy on plagiarism not only places a huge and unfair responsibility for the reputation of higher education on the students. It simultaneously, and paradoxically, risks depriving them of learning important scholarly practices.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: NIAS nytt: Asia insight. ; :4 December, s. 10-11 (+14)

    • Over the past three decades, Malaysia has been characterised by a broad movement of Islamization. The negative effects of that movement together with modernization on Malay women have indeed been pointed out by a number of scholars who have argued that the Malaysian Islamization projects, both the government's and the local dakwah movement's, have actively introduced many patriarchal Muslim Arab or Middle Eastern practices of gender and family relations into the Malaysian context and, as a result, have produced an intensification of Malay gender difference, segregation, and inequality, and a strengthening of male authority (Ong 1995, Norani 1998, Stivens 1998).

  • Leadership for teaching and learning: Exploring a department-level educational leadership role at a Swedish comprehensive university
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Educational Management, Administration & Leadership. - : SAGE Publications. - 1741-1432 .- 1741-1440. ; 51:6, s. 1461-1477
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As excellence in teaching and learning, in combination with a focus on student performance rates, are guiding the demands placed on higher education institutions, modern universities are attributing strategic importance to leadership of teaching and learning. Previous studies on educational leadership have, nevertheless, identified significant challenges to such leadership due to lack of clear role descriptions, lack of recognition, and lack of access to professional development and support. Using empirical data from a Swedish comprehensive university, we explore the experiences of an appointed leadership role for teaching and learning, that is, the Education Leader, at the department level. Our findings show that a university-wide policy establishing the role and a support structure around it has resulted in a clearly visible and valued role across the university. Furthermore, Education Leaders experience being positioned at the heart of the department’s educational activities, performing hub-like work in relation to those they lead. However, some challenges related to the complexity of the department contexts are also identified.

  • Lokala och globala mediala berättelser om sexuella övergrepp i det offentliga rummet
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Swedish Anthropological Association Conference (SANT): 6-8 April, Stockholm.

  • Submitting to God - Women and Islam in urban Malaysia
  • 2009
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • [NIAS Press:] In recent decades, Malaysia has been profoundly changed both by forces of globalization, modernization and industrialization and by a strong Islamization process. Some would argue that the situation of Malay women has worsened but such a conclusion is challenged by this study of the everyday religious practice of pious women within Kuala Lumpur’s affluent, Malay middle class. Here, women play an active part in the Islamization process not only by heightened personal religiosity but also by organizing and participating in public programmes of religious education. By organizing new forms of collective ritual and assuming new public roles as religious teachers, these religiously educated women are transforming the traditionally male-dominated gendered space of the mosque and breaking men’s monopoly over positions of religious authority. Exploring this situation, the book challenges preconceptions of the nature of Islamization as well as current theories of female agency and power. Sylva Frisk is a lecturer at the School of Global Studies at Gothenburg University in Sweden, teaching social anthropology and Asian Studies, and is Director of Studies for its Master Programme in Global Studies. Her research interests are gender, religion and globalization with a particular focus on gender and Islam in Malaysia. She is currently involved in an interdisciplinary research project on the transformations of Islam and politics in Malaysia and Indonesia.

  • Submitting to God: Women's islamization in urban Malaysia
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This anthropological study addresses issues of subjectivity and agency within the context of pious, Muslim, Malay women's religious practice in urban Malaysia. It investigaes how Malay women come to understand themselves as gendered, religious subjects and, thereby, explores the motivations and meanings that women ascribe to their emergent roles in the religious sphere and within the Islamization process. Through an ethnographic account of women's religious activities, the dissertation shows how Malay women, in the urban context, have incorporated Islamic ideas and values in their everyday lives, placing great importace on the observance of religious duties and worship and expressing sensitivity in relation to correct religious behaviour both in private and public. Through the cultivation of the desire to submit to God's will, women develop an identity as "mukmin" - a person who lives her life in accordance to God's will, thereby practicing Islam, not so much as a religion, as a way of life. In this process, women actively reproduce, recreate and transform Islamic discourse and practice through religious practices in everyday life. Theoretically the dissertation discusses the idea of women's subjectivity and agency within feminist theory, particularly the tendency to understand subject formation and agency in exclusively negative terms. At the core of such a negative paradigm of subjectification is the idea that the individual emerges from constraint. The subject is understood in passive terms as an effect of discursive structures and actions, which means that the subject's agency is mainly understood as resistance to or dislocation from dominant norms. While this approach has found its usefulness for feminist theory, this study stresses that it offers only a partial accont of agency. Through the study of the generative aspects of pious, Malay women's subjectification and agency the dissertation argues that women's acitve involvement in the Islamic movement in Malaysia can't be understood exclusively in terms of a capacity for action in the world and an ability to challenge and displace soscial norms from their own subordinate social position. Such an understanding leaves out important aspects of pious, Malay women's agency - their active cultivation of the will to submit to God's will.
