    • Objective: To provide guidelines for the development of two types of closed-set speech-perception tests that can be applied and interpreted in the same way across languages. The guidelines cover the digit triplet and the matrix sentence tests that are most commonly used to test speech recognition in noise. They were developed by a working group on Multilingual Speech Tests of the International Collegium of Rehabilitative Audiology (ICRA). Design: The recommendations are based on reviews of existing evaluations of the digit triplet and matrix tests as well as on the research experience of members of the ICRA Working Group. They represent the results of a consensus process. Results: The resulting recommendations deal with: Test design and word selection; Talker characteristics; Audio recording and stimulus preparation; Masking noise; Test administration; and Test validation. Conclusions: By following these guidelines for the development of any new test of this kind, clinicians and researchers working in any language will be able to perform tests whose results can be compared and combined in cross-language studies.

    • The International Classification of Functioning, Disabilityand Health (ICF), adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2001, offers a framework for a comprehensive understandingof health. One of the main goals of the ICF is to provide aconceptual framework of health that can be applied both forresearch purposes and in clinical settings. In order to promotethe use of the ICF in clinical settings, the WHO initiated theCore Sets project. Core Sets, targeting a specific health condition,consist of a set of ICF categories that can serve as minimalstandards (Brief ICF Core Set) or as standards for comprehensiveassessment (Comprehensive ICF Core Set). In 2009, a processof developing ICF Core Sets for Hearing Loss was initiated.This process involves three phases of development. In the firstphase, four scientific studies are conducted to collect evidencefor relevant ICF categories to be used in the Core Sets. Inphase two, a consensus conference is held to establish relevantICF categories, and in the third phase, the Core Sets that areretained are tested and validated. This paper describes theprocess of developing ICF Core Sets for Hearing Loss as wellas an invitation to participate in the project

  • Internet Interventions for Hearing Loss : Examing rehabilitation, self-report measures and internet use for hearing-aid users

    • In the future, audiological rehabilitation of adults with hearing loss will be more available, personalized and thorough due to the possibilities offered by the internet. By using the internet as a platform it is also possible to perform the process of rehabilitation in a cost-effective way. With tailored online rehabilitation programs containing topics such as communication strategies, hearing tactics and how to handle hearing aids it might be possible to foster behavioral changes that will positively affect hearing aid users.Four studies were carried out in this thesis. The first study investigated internet usage among adults with hearing loss. In the second study the administration format, online vs. paper- and pencil, of four standardized questionnaires was evaluated. Finally two randomized controlled trials were performed evaluating the efficacy of online rehabilitation programs including professional guidance by an audiologist. The programs lasted over five weeks and were designed for experienced adult hearing-aid users. The effects of the online programs were compared with the effects of a control group.It can be concluded that the use of computers and the internet overall is at least at the same level for people with hearing loss as for the general age-matched population in Sweden. Furthermore, for three of the four included questionnaires, the participants’ scores remained the same across formats. It is however recommended that the administration format remain consistent across assessment points. Finally, results from the two concluding intervention studies provide preliminary evidence that the internet can be used to deliver education and rehabilitation to experienced hearing aid users who report residual hearing problems and that their problems are reduced by the intervention; however the content and design of the online rehabilitation program requires further investigation.
