  • Training future generations to deliver evidence-based conservation and ecosystem management
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ecological Solutions and Evidence. - : Wiley. - 2688-8319. ; 2:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. To be effective, the next generation of conservation practitioners and managers need to be critical thinkers with a deep understanding of how to make evidence-based decisions and of the value of evidence synthesis.2. If, as educators, we do not make these priorities a core part of what we teach, we are failing to prepare our students to make an effective contribution to conservation practice.3. To help overcome this problem we have created open access online teaching materials in multiple languages that are stored in Applied Ecology Resources. So far, 117 educators from 23 countries have acknowledged the importance of this and are already teaching or about to teach skills in appraising or using evidence in conservation decision-making. This includes 145 undergraduate, postgraduate or professional development courses.4. We call for wider teaching of the tools and skills that facilitate evidence-based conservation and also suggest that providing online teaching materials in multiple languages could be beneficial for improving global understanding of other subject areas.

  • Agitation and impulsivity in mid and late life as possible riskmarkers for incident dementia
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Alzheimer’s & Dementia. - : Elsevier. - 2352-8737. ; 6:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To identify knowledge gaps regarding new-onset agitation and impulsivity prior to onsetof cognitive impairment or dementia the International Society to Advance Alzheimer’sResearch and Treatment Neuropsychiatric Syndromes (NPS) Professional InterestAreaconducted a scoping review. Extending a series of reviews exploring the pre-dementiarisk syndrome Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI), we focused on late-onset agitationand impulsivity (the MBI impulse dyscontrol domain) and risk of incident cognitivedecline and dementia. This scoping review of agitation and impulsivity pre-dementiasyndromes summarizes the current biomedical literature in terms of epidemiology, diagnosis andmeasurement, neurobiology, neuroimaging, biomarkers, course and prognosis, treatment, and ongoing clinical trials. Validations for pre-dementia scales suchas the MBI Checklist, and incorporation into longitudinal and intervention trials, areneeded to better understand impulse dyscontrol as a risk factor for mild cognitiveimpairment and dementia.

  • RPC : The rosetta plasma consortium
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Space Science Reviews. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0038-6308 .- 1572-9672. ; 128:1-4, s. 629-647
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Rosetta Plasma Consortium (RPC) will make in-situ measurements of the plasma enviromnent of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The consortium will provide the complementary data sets necessary for an understanding of the plasma processes in the inner coma, and the structure and evolution of the coma with the increasing cometary activity. Five sensors have been selected to achieve this: the Ion and Electron Sensor (IES), the Ion Composition Analyser (ICA), the Langmuir Probe (LAP), the Mutual Impedance Probe (MIP) and the Magnetometer (MAG). The sensors interface to the spacecraft through the Plasma Interface Unit (PIU). The consortium approach allows for scientific, technical and operational coordination, and makes Optimum use of the available mass and power resources.

  • High-density lipoproteins vascular protective functions in metabolic and cardiovascular disease - could extracellular vesicles be at play?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Clinical Science. - : Portland Press on behalf of the Medical Research Society and the Biochemical Society. - 0143-5221 .- 1470-8736. ; 134:22, s. 2977-2986
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a circulating complex of lipids and proteins known primarily for its role in reverse cholesterol transport and consequent protection from atheroma. In spite of this, therapies aimed at increasing HDL concentration do not reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and as such focus has shifted towards other HDL functions protective of vascular health - including vasodilatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-thrombotic actions. It has been demonstrated that in disease states such as CVD and conditions of insulin resistance such as Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), HDL function is impaired owing to changes in the abundance and function of HDL-associated lipids and proteins, resulting in reduced vascular protection. However, the gold standard density ultracentrifugation technique used in the isolation of HDL also co-isolates extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs are ubiquitous cell-derived particles with lipid bilayers that carry a number of lipids, proteins and DNA/RNA/miRNAs involved in cell-to-cell communication. EVs transfer their bioactive load through interaction with cell surface receptors, membrane fusion and endocytic pathways, and have been implicated in both cardiovascular and metabolic diseases - both as protective and pathogenic mediators. Given that studies using density ultracentrifugation to isolate HDL also co-isolate EVs, biological effects attributed to HDL may be confounded by EVs. We hypothesise that some of HDLs vascular protective functions in cardiovascular and metabolic disease may be mediated by EVs. Elucidating the contribution of EVs to HDL functions will provide better understanding of vascular protection and function in conditions of insulin resistance and potentially provide novel therapeutic targets for such diseases.
