    • GIS applications are nowadays used in nearly every area of society and the need for GIS competence is therefore increasing over all. Micro-training and open educational resources are important concepts to reach new target groups, not least from a higher education perspective. The use of Web 2.0 creates possibilities for a more user friendly approach and for broader outreach. The eGIS+ project addresses the question of how to capture the interest of children and new groups for GIS and to offer GIS competence with a high level of flexibility in time, space and study pace.

    • Stimulated electronic x-ray Raman scattering is the building block for several proposed x-ray pump probe techniques, that would allow the study of electron dynamics at unprecedented timescales.We present high spectral resolution data on stimulated electronic x-ray Raman scattering in a gas sample of neon using a self-amplified spontaneous emission x-ray free-electron laser. Despite the limited spectral coherence and broad bandwidth of these sources, high-resolution spectra can be obtained by statistical methods, opening the path to coherent stimulated x-ray Raman spectroscopy. An extension of these ideas to molecules and the results of a recent experiment in CO are discussed.

  • Coherency Estimation in Power Systems : A Koopman Operator Approach

    • Integrating a significant amount of non-synchronous generation into power systems creates new technical challenges for transmission systems. The research and understanding of the impact of the non-synchronous generation through back-to-back Full Rated Converters’ (FRCs) on power system’s coherency is a matter of importance. Coherency behavior under the presence of large inclusion of non-synchronous generation requires more research, in order to understand the forming groups, after a disturbance, when the inertia is decreasing due to the decoupling. This document presents the application of the so-called Koopman Operator for the identification of coherent groups in power systems with the influence of non-synchronous generation. The Koopman Analysis clusters the coherent groups based on the measurements obtained. The visualization of the coherent groups identified allows to observe their dynamic variations according to the penetration level or fault location. The applied method of coherency identification is evaluated in the Nordic test system through gradually increasing integration of non-synchronous generations and different fault scenarios.

  • Use of by-products in edible coatings and biodegradable packaging materials for food preservation

    • A large part of the by-products of plant and animal origin are sources of different valuable compounds, such as polysaccharides or proteins, which are useful materials for developing edible or biodegradable coatings and film formulations. Nowadays, this has acquired great importance in the development of new materials for substituting, at least partially, the traditional food packaging plastics, which show significant shortcomings in terms of their environmental impact. This also implies the use of renewable resources instead of the limited petroleum reserves.Alternative and novel materials, which possess commercial potential, are those derived from under-used food products, renewable resources and the valorisation of agro-industrial and marine wastes. The exploitation of these materials additionally provides added value to the waste products and represents an attractive alternative to the non-renewable sources, in the framework of circular economy. In addition, most of them are not just biodegradable, but are also edible, or can even be considered as active compounds (e.g. with antimicrobial or antioxidant properties), thereby contributing to the development of new sustainable packaging strategies for food preservation. In this chapter, these alternative materials are explored and the benefits and drawbacks are addressed.

  • Screening of Solvents for CO2 Capture considering Sustainability Criteria via Data Envelopment Analysis

    • The growing trend towards the development of more sustainable chemical products and processes has created a clear need for decision-support tools to evaluate and optimise the sustainability level of a system. In this work, we propose a new methodology to screen and select chemicals according to the extent to which they adhere to sustainability principles that is based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a technique developed in economics for efficiency assessment. The capabilities of the DEA-based approach in the context of computer aided process engineering are demonstrated through the screening of 125 conventional amine-based solvents for CO 2 capture according to 10 performance indicators, considering technical (economic), environmental and social aspects simultaneously. Our approach eliminates 36% of the solvents (those found inefficient), and establishes in turn quantitative targets and clear guidelines on how to improve them. The DEA models are capable of identifying the practical downsides of amines as main sources of inefficiency, providing clear improvement targets for properties such as vapour pressure, acute toxicity and several life cycle impacts. The final aim of the DEA-based analysis is to facilitate the selection of more sustainable chemicals in the transition towards a more sustainable chemical industry.
