  • A Nitroxide Radical Conjugated Polymer as an Additive to Reduce Nonradiative Energy Loss in Organic Solar Cells
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : Wiley. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; 35:23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nonfullerene-acceptor-based organic solar cells (NFA-OSCs) are now set off to the 20% power conversion efficiency milestone. To achieve this, minimizing all loss channels, including nonradiative photovoltage losses, seems a necessity. Nonradiative recombination, to a great extent, is known to be an inherent material property due to vibrationally induced decay of charge-transfer (CT) states or their back electron transfer to the triplet excitons. Herein, it is shown that the use of a new conjugated nitroxide radical polymer with 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidine-1-oxyl side groups (GDTA) as an additive results in an improvement of the photovoltaic performance of NFA-OSCs based on different active layer materials. Upon the addition of GDTA, the open-circuit voltage (VOC), fill factor (FF), and short-circuit current density (JSC) improve simultaneously. This approach is applied to several material systems including state-of-the-art donor/acceptor pairs showing improvement from 15.8% to 17.6% (in the case of PM6:Y6) and from 17.5% to 18.3% (for PM6:BTP-eC9). Then, the possible reasons behind the observed improvements are discussed. The results point toward the suppression of the CT state to triplet excitons loss channel. This work presents a facile, promising, and generic approach to further improve the performance of NFA-OSCs.

  • Modulating the nanoscale morphology on carboxylate-pyrazine containing terpolymer toward 17.8% efficiency organic solar cells with enhanced thermal stability
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1385-8947. ; 446
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It had been commonly accepted in the organic photovoltaic (OPV) community that subtle variations in the molecular structure of active layer materials would cause profound impacts on their aggregating structure and blend morphology and therefore the performance of such polymer solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we employed an electron-deficient building block 3,6-dithiophenyl-2-carboxylate pyrazine (DTCPz) for constructing one series of promising donor terpolymers of PMZ1, PMZ2, and PMZ3, respectively, gaining their relatively lower-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels, more closed π-π stacking and enhanced crystallinity in thin films, and lower miscibility with acceptor Y6, in comparison with their parent polymer counterpart (namely PM6). Reaching DTCPz moieties up to 20% (mol/mol%) in its terpolymer composition, the resulting polymer (PMZ2) achieved more favorable phase separation with improved exciton dissociation, and charge transport and extraction. As a result, an outstanding fill factor of 77.2% and a promising power conversion efficiency of 17.8 % was achieved. Moreover, the corresponding device shows better thermal stability over the PM6-based one. This work suggests a facile method for significantly improving the thin film morphology of the active-layer materials via fine-tuning the chemical structure of electron-deficient units on the backbone of the wide bandgap donor polymer, therefore achieving enhanced photovoltaic performance and thermal stability for practical applications.

  • Bi-induced highly n-type carbon-doped InGaAsBi films grown by molecular beam epitaxy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0022-2461 .- 1573-4803. ; 53:5, s. 3537-3543
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carbon-doped InGaAsBi films on InP/Fe (100) substrates have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). It has been found that Bismuth incorporation induces extremely high n-type carbon-doped InGaAsBi films, and its electron concentration increases linearly up to 10(21) cm(-3) (highest reported to date for n-type III-V semiconductor materials) with increased CBr4 supply pressure, implying InGaAsBi to be a prospective ohmic contact material for InP-based terahertz transistors. It also has been proved by secondary ion mass spectroscopy that the alloy composition of carbon-doped InGaAsBi is altered by the preferential etching effect of CBr4, but the etching effect on the Bi content is negligible. • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Bismuth Effects on Electronic Levels in GaSb(Bi)/AlGaSb Quantum Wells Probed by Infrared Photoreflectance
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Chinese Physics Letters. - 0256-307X .- 1741-3540. ; 32:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • GaSb(Bi)/Al0.2Ga0.8Sb single quantum wells are characterized by a Fourier transform infrared spectrometerbased photoreflectance method at 77 K. Spatially direct and indirect transitions between the electronic levels at and above the effective band gap are well resolved. The shifts of the electronic levels with Bi incorporation are identified quantitatively. The results show that the upshift of the valence band edge is clarified to be dominant, while the Bi-induced downshift of the conduction band edge does exist and contributes to the band gap reduction in the GaSbBi quantum-well layer by (29±6)%.

  • Infrared absorbance of vertically-aligned multi-walled CNT forest as a function of synthesis temperature and time
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Materials Research Bulletin. - : Elsevier BV. - 0025-5408. ; 126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the growth of optimized vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (VA-MWCNT) forests by LPCVD method for use in a large-area absorber in infrared detectors is presented. The effect of synthesis temperature (500−700 °C) and time (1−10 min) on the optical absorption coefficient in the infrared (2−20 μm) is investigated by FT-IR measurement at various incident angles (15-80°). The structural properties of VA-MWCNT are characterized by SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy. Spectral measurements show an increasing absorption with the height of the forest that results at increased synthesis time and temperature. However, the absorption coefficient decreases with increasing synthesize time and temperature, while it is also affected by other properties, such as diameter, density, alignment, and uniformity. Moreover, the reduction in absorption at oblique incident angles demonstrates the relevance of surface properties. Finally, a circular graphite waveguide system is used to model the absorption characteristics of an MWCNT forest.

  • Impedance Spectroscopy for Enhanced Data Collection of Conductometric Soot Sensors
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics. ; 2020-June, s. 1099-1103
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Impedance spectroscopy in the frequency range 100 Hz to 10 kHz has been applied to the Inter-Digitated Electrode (IDE) structure that is conventionally operated as a resistive sensor for the measurement of Particulate Matter (PM). The measurement of both the in-phase (resistive) and out-of-phase (capacitive) components of the impedance over this frequency range provides more data on PM as compared to DC resistance measurement only. Experimental validation confirms a more gradual change in capacitance with soot buildup as compared to the sudden reduction of resistance with dendrite formation. The effect of an additional vertical electric field for an increased capacitive sensitivity due to stimulated soot buildup has been experimentally investigated using the electrically conductive flow housing of the IDE structure as an additional suspended electrode.

  • Maintaining transparency of a heated MEMs membrane for enabling long-term optical measurements on soot-containing exhaust gas
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sensors. - : MDPI AG. - 1424-8220. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ensuring optical transparency over a wide spectral range of a window with a view into the tailpipe of the combustion engine, while it is exposed to the harsh environment of sootcontaining exhaust gas, is an essential pre-requisite for introducing optical techniques for long-term monitoring of automotive emissions. Therefore, a regenerable window composed of an optically transparent polysilicon-carbide membrane with a diameter ranging from 100 µm up to 2000 µm has been fabricated in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology. In the first operating mode, window transparency is periodically restored by pulsed heating of the membrane using an integrated resistor for heating to temperatures that result in oxidation of deposited soot (600–700 °C). In the second mode, the membrane is kept transparent by repelling soot particles using thermophoresis. The same integrated resistor is used to yield a temperature gradient by continuous moderate-temperature heating. Realized devices have been subjected to laboratory soot exposure experiments. Membrane temperatures exceeding 500 °C have been achieved without damage to the membrane. Moreover, heating of membranes to ΔT = 40 °C above gas temperature provides sufficient thermophoretic repulsion to prevent particle deposition and maintain transparency at high soot exposure, while non-heated identical membranes on the same die and at the same exposure are heavily contaminated.
