- Idag använder vi ungefär tio gånger mer fossil energi än bioenergi i världen. Nu ökar användningen av bioenergi kraftigt. Men globalt sett finns det inte tillräckligt med bioenergi för att ersätta de fossila bränslena, skriver tre forskare på Chalmers. Hur ska vi använda de knappa resurserna på bästa sätt? Och hur ska vi kunna begränsa de negativa effekter som ökad efterfrågan på bioenergi kan få? Det handlar bland annat om exploatering av värdefulla ekosystem som regnskogar.

- The important role of chirality in nature has long been recognized. Large groups of biologically important molecules such as amino acids are chiral, and for understanding the properties of these substances it is necessary to separate and quantitate the enantiomers individually. The diverse vital function of amino acids in living organisms make it important to determine the ratios of the enantiomers in various areas, such as dating, 1 food chemistry, 2 and studies of extraterrestrial material. 3 For peptide synthesis, it is important to determine the enantiomeric purity of the amino acids used and the extent of racemization which may occur during the synthesis. For analytical procedures which involve liberation of the amino acids from peptides and proteins, it is necessary to check the extent of racemization in the hydrolysis procedure used. Studies have shown that the degree of racemization during hydrolysis varies from one type of peptide to another, and that peptide-bound amino acids generally racemize faster than free amino acids. © 1991 by CRC Press LLC.

- The Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS) combines the use of new imaging technologies, large-scale proteomics/metabolomics/genomics, and epidemiological analyses to extensively characterize a Swedish cohort of 30,000 men and women aged between 50 and 64 years. Its main aims are to improve risk prediction and to optimize our ability to study mechanisms of cardiopulmonary diseases. SCAPIS is currently recruiting at six sites in Sweden, and a pilot study was conducted in 2012 to test the feasibility of the comprehensive study protocol. In the planning phase, it was recognized that the detailed phenotyping used in SCAPIS would identify a large number of clinical findings in need of medical attention. This was confirmed by evaluation of results from the pilot study. Here we focus on pulmonary nodules and asymptomatic coronary artery stenosis. These clinical features were observed in a large number of participants, and the clinical handing and prognosis related to these observations are unclear. They thus posed great challenges for the study in their practical and ethical handling. This chapter describes how we developed procedures to handle these findings based on existing evidence and expert consensus as well as deliberations on ethical issues.
