  • Results from the intercalibration of optical low light calibration sources 2011
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Geoscientific Instrumentation, Methods and Data Systems. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 2193-0856 .- 2193-0864. ; 1:1, s. 43-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Following the 38th Annual European Meeting onAtmospheric Studies by Optical Methods in Siuntio in Finland,an intercalibration workshop for optical low light calibrationsources was held in Sodankyl¨a, Finland. The mainpurpose of this workshop was to provide a comparable scalefor absolute measurements of aurora and airglow. All sourcesbrought to the intercalibration workshop were compared tothe Fritz Peak reference source using the Lindau CalibrationPhotometer built by Wilhelm Barke and Hans Lauche in1984. The results were compared to several earlier intercalibrationworkshops. It was found that most sources were fairlystable over time, with errors in the range of 5–25 %. To furthervalidate the results, two sources were also intercalibratedat UNIS, Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Preliminary analysis indicatesagreement with the intercalibration in Sodankyl¨a withinabout 15–25 %.

  • Review of Current Progress of Thermal Interface Materials for Electronics Thermal Management Applications
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 Ieee 16th International Conference on Nanotechnology (Ieee-Nano). - 9781509014934 ; , s. 371-374
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasing power densities within microelectronic systems place an ever increasing demand on the thermal management. Thermal interface materials (TIMs) are used to fill air gaps at the interface between two materials, greatly increasing the thermal conductance when solid surface are attached together. The last decade has provided significant development on high-performing TIMs, and this paper makes a summarized review on recent progress on the topic. Current state of the art commercial TIM types are presented, and discussed in regards to their advantages and disadvantages. Two main categories of TIMs with high interest are then reviewed: continuous metal phase TIMs and carbon nanotube array TIMs.

  • Effect of Fiber Concentration on Mechanical and Thermal Properties of a Solder Matrix Fiber Composite Thermal Interface Material
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology. - 2156-3985 .- 2156-3950. ; 9:6, s. 1045-1053
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increased demand on the mechanical and thermal properties on the thermal interface and die attach material creates a demand for materials with tailored material properties. Solder matrix fiber composites (SMFCs) have been shown to address these challenges, but have, so far, required complicated procedures and components. In this paper, we present the fabrication of a new type of SMFC based on commercially available fiber networks infiltrated with Sn-Ag-Cu alloy (SAC305) or indium using equipment for large-volume production. The composite material exhibits similar thermal properties compared to pure solder, and mechanical properties that can be tailored toward specific applications. We also show that the handling properties of the SMFC allows it to be used in process flows where multiple reflow cycles are required and can achieve a well-defined bond line thickness (BLT) and good bonding using fluxless reflow under pressure.

  • Reliability investigation of a carbon nanotube array thermal interface material
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1073 .- 1996-1073. ; 12:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As feature density increases within microelectronics, so does the dissipated power density, which puts an increased demand on thermal management. Thermal interface materials (TIMs) are used at the interface between contacting surfaces to reduce the thermal resistance, and is a critical component within many electronics systems. Arrays of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have gained significant interest for application as TIMs, due to the high thermal conductivity, no internal thermal contact resistances and an excellent conformability. While studies show excellent thermal performance, there has to date been no investigation into the reliability of CNT array TIMs. In this study, CNT array TIMs bonded with polymer to close a Si-Cu interface were subjected to thermal cycling. Thermal interface resistance measurements showed a large degradation of the thermal performance of the interface within the first 100 cycles. More detailed thermal investigation of the interface components showed that the connection between CNTs and catalyst substrate degrades during thermal cycling even in the absence of thermal expansion mismatch, and the nature of this degradation was further analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This study indicates that the reliability will be an important consideration for further development and commercialization of CNT array TIMs.

  • Fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysate by the alternative industrial ethanol yeast Dekkera bruxellensis
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Letters in Applied Microbiology. - Malden, USA : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0266-8254 .- 1472-765X. ; 53:1, s. 73-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: Testing the ability of the alternative ethanol production yeast Dekkera bruxellensis to produce ethanol from lignocellulose hydrolysate and comparing it to Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Methods and Results: Industrial isolates of D. bruxellensis and S. cerevisiae were cultivated in small-scale batch fermentations of enzymatically hydrolysed steam exploded aspen sawdust. Different dilutions of hydrolysate were tested. None of the yeasts grew in undiluted or 1 : 2 diluted hydrolysate [final glucose concentration always adjusted to 40 g l(-1) (0.22 mol l(-1))]. This was most likely due to the presence of inhibitors such as acetate or furfural. In 1 : 5 hydrolysate, S. cerevisiae grew, but not D. bruxellensis, and in 1 : 10 hydrolysate, both yeasts grew. An external vitamin source (e.g. yeast extract) was essential for growth of D. bruxellensis in this lignocellulosic hydrolysate and strongly stimulated S. cerevisiae growth and ethanol production. Ethanol yields of 0 42 +/- 0 01 g ethanol (g glucose)(-1) were observed for both yeasts in 1 : 10 hydrolysate. In small-scale continuous cultures with cell recirculation, with a gradual increase in the hydrolysate concentration, D. bruxellensis was able to grow in 1 : 5 hydrolysate. In bioreactor experiments with cell recirculation, hydrolysate contents were increased up to 1 : 2 hydrolysate, without significant losses in ethanol yields for both yeasts and only slight differences in viable cell counts, indicating an ability of both yeasts to adapt to toxic compounds in the hydrolysate. Conclusions: Dekkera bruxellensis and S. cerevisiae have a similar potential to ferment lignocellulose hydrolysate to ethanol and to adapt to fermentation inhibitors in the hydrolysate.Significance and Impact of the study: This is the first study investigating the potential of D. bruxellensis to ferment lignocellulosic hydrolysate. Its high competitiveness in industrial fermentations makes D. bruxellensis an interesting alternative for ethanol production from those substrates.

  • Bipolar electrochemical capacitors using double-sided carbon nanotubes on graphite electrodes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Power Sources. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-7753. ; 451
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electrochemical capacitor (EC) is a key enabler for the miniaturized self-powered systems expected to become ubiquitous with the advent of the internet-of-things (IoT). Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) on graphite holds promise as electrodes for compact and low-loss ECs. However, as with all ECs, the operating voltage is low, and miniaturization of higher voltage devices necessitates a bipolar design. In this paper, we demonstrate a bipolar EC using graphite/VACNTs electrodes fabricated using a joule heating chemical vapor deposition (CVD) setup. The constructed EC contains one layer of double-sided VACNTs on graphite as bipolar electrode. Compared to a series connection of two individual devices, the bipolar EC has 22% boost in volumetric energy density. More significant boost is envisaged for stacking more bipolar electrode layers. The energy enhancement is achieved without aggravating self-discharge (71.2% retention after 1 h), and at no sacrifice of cycling stability (96.7% over 50000 cycles) owing to uniform growth of VACNTs and thus eliminating cell imbalance problems.

  • Degradation of Carbon Nanotube Array Thermal Interface Materials through Thermal Aging: Effects of Bonding, Array Height, and Catalyst Oxidation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8252 .- 1944-8244. ; 13:26, s. 30992-31000
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Carbon nanotube (CNT) array thermal interface materials (TIMs) are promising candidates for high-performance applications in terms of thermal performance. However, in order to be useful in commercial applications, the reliability of the interfaces is an equally important parameter, which so far has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, the reliability of CNT array TIMs is investigated through accelerated aging. The roles of CNT array height and substrate configuration are studied for their relative impact on thermal resistance degradation. After aging, the CNT catalyst is analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to evaluate chemical changes. The CNT-catalyst bond appears to degrade during aging but not to the extent that the TIM performance is compromised. On the other hand, coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch between surfaces creates strain that needs to be absorbed, which requires CNT arrays with sufficient height. Transfer and bonding of both CNT roots and tips also create more reliable interfaces. Crucially, we find that the CNT array height of most previously reported CNT array TIMs is not enough to prevent significant reliability problems.

  • Co-combustion of municipal sludge with wood/coal in CFB--enrichment of phosphourous and cadmium in ashes
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: In Proceedings of the 17th International Fluidized Bed Combustion Conference--FBC2003 held in Jacksonville, Florida, USA May 18-21, 2003. - 0791836754
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Municipal sludge, originating from two wastewatertreatment plants in Sweden, has been burned together withwood pellets or bituminous coal in a circulating fluidised bed (CFB) boiler equipped with a secondary cyclone and bag filter for fly ash removal. Such co-combustion is an alternative to mono-combustion of sludge. The sludge is burned in either mechanically dewatered or pre-dried form. The mechanically dewatered sludge was fed with a pump, but pre-dried sludge could be fed by the fuel feed system normally used for coal. Both types of sludge were burned with either wood-pellets or coal as main fuel under identical operating conditions, typical for a CFB boiler. The focus was on ash balances and on analysis of fuels and ashes to obtain concentrations of relevant species. The presence of phosphorous (P) is of special interest in relation to trace elements, such as mercury (Hg), cadmium(Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) andzinc (Zn). For this reason a comparison has been made between these trace elements and phosphorous in the various ashes and the original sludge as well as other sources of phosphorous thatcould be used for agricultural purposes. The results show that sewage sludge and fly ash, after combustion of sludge, contain similar amounts of phosphorous as other phosphorous sources for agricultural use, but the levels of trace elements in relation to phosphorous (Hg, Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu) are higher than in animal manure and artificial fertilizer and higher than the present limits in Sweden.

  • A discrete particle approach to simulate the combined effect of blast and sand impact loading of steel plates
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of the mechanics and physics of solids. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-5096 .- 1873-4782. ; 59:5, s. 940-958
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structural response of a stainless steel plate subjected to the combined blast and sand impact loading from a buried charge has been investigated using a fully coupled approach in which a discrete particle method is used to determine the load due to the high explosive detonation products, the air shock and the sand, and a finite element method predicts the plate deflection. The discrete particle method is based on rigid, spherical particles that transfer forces between each other during collisions. This method, which is based on a Lagrangian formulation, has several advantages over coupled Lagrangian-Eulerian approaches as both advection errors and severe contact problems are avoided. The method has been validated against experimental tests where spherical 150 g C-4 charges were detonated at various stand-off distances from square, edge-clamped 3.4 mm thick AL-6XN stainless steel plates. The experiments were carried out for a bare charge, a charge enclosed in dry sand and a charge enclosed in fully saturated wet sand. The particle-based method is able to describe the physical interactions between the explosive reaction products and soil particles leading to a realistic prediction of the sand ejecta speed and momentum. Good quantitative agreement between the experimental and predicted deformation response of the plates is also obtained.

  • Stable Isotope Composition in Daphnia Is Modulated by Growth, Temperature, and Toxic Exposure : Implications for Trophic Magnification Factor Assessment
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 49:11, s. 6934-6942
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The potential for using stable isotope analysis in risk assessment of environmental contaminants is crucially dependent on the predictability of the trophic transfer of isotopes in food webs. The relationship between contaminant levels and trophic position of consumers is widely used to assess biomagnification properties of various pollutants by establishing trophic magnification factors (TMF). However, contaminant-induced variability of the isotopic composition in biota is poorly understood. Here, we investigated effects of toxic exposure on delta N-15 and delta C-13 values in a consumer, with a main hypothesis that these effects would be largely mediated via growth rate and metabolic turnover of the test animals. The cladoceran Daphnia magna was used in two experiments that were conducted to manipulate growth and body condition (assayed as C:N ratio) by food availability and temperature (Experiment 1) and by toxic exposure to the pesticide lindane (Experiment 2). We found a significant negative effect of growth rate and a positive effect of temperature on the consumer-diet discrimination factor for delta N-15 and delta C-13, with no effects on the C:N ratio (Experiment 1). In lindane-exposed daphnids, a significant growth inhibition was observed, with concomitant increase in metabolic costs and significantly elevated size-specific delta N-15 and delta C-13 values. Moreover, a significantly higher incorporation of carbon relative to nitrogen, yet a concomitant decrease in C:N ratio was observed in the exposed animals. Together, these results have methodological implications for determining trophic positions and TMF in polluted environments, where elevated delta N-15 values would translate into overestimated trophic positions and underestimated TMF. Furthermore, altered delta C-13 values may lead to erroneous food-chain assignment of the consumer in question.
