  • Physical and psychosocial work conditions among baggage handlers in six Swedish airports
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction Flight baggage handlers are mainly engaged in sorting luggage or cargo, loading and unloading it to and from the airplanes. The Vocational Training and Working Environment Council, TYA - formed by employer’s and employee’s organizations in the transportation sector - initiated a scientific study in 2009 to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and their suspected determinants in six Swedish airports involving a total of about 1000 handlers in 14 cargo- and handling companies. Encouraged by an initial literature review, the present field study was designed to contain qualitative, questionnaire-based, and observational surveys of working conditions, as well as extensive direct measurements of postures using full-shift inclinometry. This paper reports the design and results of the questionnaire part of the study.MethodAll baggage handlers working at least half-time (n=1044) were encouraged to fill in an extensive questionnaire handed out at the workplace by a research team member. In general the researcher collected the questionnaires at the same occasion. The questionnaire addressed general health, work capacity and physical exposures in relevant handling tasks. It also included a modified version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ), the Nordic Council of Minister’s Questionnaire (NMQ) on disorders, and the SOFI-questionnaire measuring perceived fatigue.ResultsThe response rate was 73%. The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in the back, shoulders and wrists during the last 12 months was 70%, 60% and 45%. Positive effects of devices used for reducing perceived physical load were confirmed. The handlers expressed a low confidence in the leadership, and insufficient feedback, information and influence at work. Fatigue particularly occurred in the dimensions lack of energy and physical discomfort.DiscussionThe observed prevalence of low back pain (70%) is high, and in parity with results among nurses in Sweden (64%; Josephson et al. 1997) and China (56%; Smith et al. 2004). Further examination of questionnaires, interviews and direct posture measurements will identify determinants to consider for intervention to reduce the prevalence of disorders among the baggage handlers.Josephson M, et al. • Amino Acid-induced S6K1 Activity In Human Skeletal Muscle Is Mediated By Increased mTor/Rheb Interaction : 128 June 1, 11: 15 AM - 11: 30 AM.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Medicine And Science In Sports And Exercise 2016 May; Vol. 48 (5S Suppl 1), pp. 17.. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). ; 48:5 Suppl 1, s. 17-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cell culture studies have shown that amino acids activate mTORC1 signaling by increasing the interaction between mTOR and its essential activator Rheb. However, the existence of this mechanism in human skeletal muscle remains to be determined.PURPOSE: To determine if increased mTORC1 signaling in response to amino acids in human skeletal muscle is due to an increased interaction between mTOR and Rheb.METHODS: Eight well trained men performed resistance exercise on two separate occasions. In connection with the exercise, subjects were supplemented with flavored water (Pla) and essential amino acids (EAA) in a double-blind, randomized cross-over design. Muscle biopsies were taken in the vastus lateralis muscle before, immediately after and 90 and 180 min post exercise. Activity of the mTORC1 pathway was assessed by a radiolabeled in-vitro kinase assay for its immediate downstream target S6K1. Protein-protein interactions were determined by western blot following co-immunoprecipitation of mTOR with Rheb. Co-immunoprecipitation was performed on pooled muscle samples from three of the eight subjects.RESULTS: Activity of S6K1 remained unchanged immediately after exercise in both trials. However, at 90 min post exercise, S6K1 activity increased by approximately 2- and 8-fold (p<0.05) from baseline the Pla and EAA trials, respectively. At the 180 min time point, S6K1 activity remained elevated in both trials being approx. 3-fold higher in the Pla trial and 5-fold higher (p<0.05) in the EAA trial. The fold-change in mTOR and Rheb interaction largely resembled the activity pattern of S6K1 in both trials; in the Pla trial the fold-change was 0.9, 1.3 and 1.4 while in the EAA trial the fold-change was 1.6, 2.9 and 1.9 immediately after, 90 min after and 180 min after exercise, respectively.CONCLUSIONS: The large increase in S6K1 activity following EAA intake appears to be mediated by an increased interaction between mTOR and its proximal activator Rheb. This is the first time this mechanism has been demonstrated in human skeletal muscle.

  • Students and teachers construction of mathematics and mathematics education in the light of the political solution “more of the same”
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The 41st Annual Congress of the Nordic Educational Research Association. ; , s. 371-371
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mathematics education in Sweden has during the last decade been under consideration in varied ways. Reports from PISA and TIMSS indicating that the results in mathematics goes from bad to worse has started a rescue-army departing from the Ministry of Education. Money has been investigated, addressed to further education of mathematics teachers and to increase the time in mathematics during the years in compulsory school. In line with this also the Swedish National Agency for Education has taken initiatives to develop mathematics education. Here the development of quality of mathematics education and the learning outcomes are at focus. To investigate this further our research group has followed two schools supported by the Agency initiative during 2010-2012. All together 120 students and 8 teachers were interviewed twice, in groups. The aim of this ongoing research project is to analyse and discuss students and teachers construction of mathematics and mathematics education and to carry out a radical discussion in relation to theories of modernity and political documents. In this presentation the ambition is to communicate the first preliminary results.Discursive psychology and discourse theory, both founded in social constructionist and poststructuralist theories are used to analyse the extensive empirical material. The combination opens up for a two-sided analysis where the interesting relationship between agency and structure may be analysed with a trustworthy methodology. In relation to mathematics education we find this approach useful as it opens up for a critical discussion.Four categories have emerged from the empirical material. The students are constructing mathematics and mathematics education as a resource, as an effort, as boredom and as pending. Our research group find those results interesting to discuss per se, but also in relation to the national initiatives where the approach to find solutions in mathematics itself appears to be governing. It could be considered as important to discuss and problematize the political solution “more of the same” as a way to develop mathematics education in the 21st century. The ambition in this presentation is to contribute to the debate about mathematics education by transforming the problem into a concern of society.
