  • Polarimetric properties of the near-Sun asteroid (155140) 2005 UD in comparison with other asteroids and meteoritic samples
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 509:3, s. 4128-4142
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The investigation of asteroids near the Sun is important for understanding the final evolutionary stage of primitive Solar system objects. A near-Sun asteroid (NSA), (155140) 2005 UD, has orbital elements similar to those of (3200) Phaethon (the target asteroid for the JAXA’s DESTINY+ mission). We conducted photometric and polarimetric observations of 2005 UD and found that this asteroid exhibits a polarization phase curve similar to that of Phaethon over a wide range of observed solar phase angles (α = 20–105°) but different from those of (101955) Bennu and (162173) Ryugu (asteroids composed of hydrated carbonaceous materials). At a low phase angle (α ≲ 30°), the polarimetric properties of these NSAs (2005 UD and Phaethon) are consistent with anhydrous carbonaceous chondrites, while the properties of Bennu are consistent with hydrous carbonaceous chondrites. We derived the geometric albedo, pV ∼ 0.1 (in the range of 0.088–0.109); mean V-band absolute magnitude, HV = 17.54 ± 0.02; synodic rotational period, Trot=5.2388±0.0022h (the two-peaked solution is assumed); and effective mean diameter, Deff=1.32±0.06km. At large phase angles (α ≳ 80°), the polarization phase curve are likely explained by the dominance of large grains and the paucity of small micron-sized grains. We conclude that the polarimetric similarity of these NSAs can be attributed to the intense solar heating of carbonaceous materials around their perihelia, where large anhydrous particles with small porosity could be produced by sintering.

  • Difference between car-to-cyclist crash and near crash in a perpendicular crash configuration based on driving recorder analysis
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Accident Analysis and Prevention. - : Elsevier BV. - 0001-4575. ; 117, s. 1-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analyzing a crash using driving recorder data makes it possible to objectively examine factors contributing to the occurrence of the crash. In this study, car-to-cyclist crashes and near crashes recorded on cars equipped with advanced driving recorders were compared with each other in order to examine the factors that differentiate near crashes from crashes, as well as identify the causes of the crashes. Focusing on cases where the car and cyclist approached each other perpendicularly, the differences in the car’s and cyclist’s parameters such as velocity, distance and avoidance behavior were analyzed. The results show that car-to-cyclist crashes would not be avoidable when the car approaching the cyclist enters an area where the average deceleration required to stop the car is more than 0.45 G (4.4 m/s2). In order for this situation to occur, there are two types of cyclist crash scenarios. In the first scenario, the delay in the drivers’ reaction in activating the brakes is the main factor responsible for the crash. In this scenario, time-to-collision when the cyclist first appears in the video is more than 2.0 s. In the second scenario, the sudden appearance of a cyclist from behind an obstacle on the street is the factor responsible for the crash. In this case, the time-to-collision is less than 1.2 s, and the crash cannot be avoided even if the driver exhibited avoidance maneuvers.

  • Comparison of Real Accident and Near Miss Incident of Cyclist Collisions Based on Drive Recorder
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2017 JSAE Annual Congress (Spring).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to examine factors that caused vehicle-cyclist collisions, vehicle-cyclist collisions at intersections that were recorded on a car driving recorder were compared to that of near-miss incidents. It was found that unless the cyclist took action to avoid the collision, collisions occur when the car needed a deceleration of 9.8m/s2 or more to avoid the collision. Two different types of collisions were observed: delays of drivers to start braking after a cyclist is present, and the sudden appearance of the cyclist. The percentage of incidents where the cyclist suddenly appeared was higher in collisions cases compared to near-miss incidents.

  • Constitutive activation of alternative nuclear factor kappa B pathway in canine diffuse large B-cell lymphoma contributes to tumor cell survival and is a target of new adjuvant therapies
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Leukemia and Lymphoma. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1042-8194 .- 1029-2403. ; 58:7, s. 1702-1710
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Activation of the classical nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NFκB) pathway is a common molecular event observed in both human and canine diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Although the oncogenic potential of the alternative NFκB pathway (ANFκBP) has also been recently identified in DLBCL, its precise role in tumor pathogenesis and potential as a treatment target is understudied. We hypothesized that up-regulation of the ANFκBP plays an important role in the proliferation and survival of canine DLBCL cells, and we demonstrate that the ANFκBP is constitutively active in primary canine DLBCL samples and a cell line (CLBL1). We further demonstrate that a small interfering RNA inhibits the activation of the NFκB pathway and induces apoptosis in canine DLBCL cells. In conclusion, the ANFκBP facilitates survival of canine DLBCL cells, and thus, dogs with spontaneous DLBCL can provide a useful large animal model to study therapies targeting the ANFκBP.

  • Genome-wide Association Study Identifies Shared Risk Loci Common to Two Malignancies in Golden Retrievers
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: PLOS Genetics. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7390 .- 1553-7404. ; 11:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dogs, with their breed-determined limited genetic background, are great models of human disease including cancer. Canine B-cell lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma are both malignancies of the hematologic system that are clinically and histologically similar to human B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma and angiosarcoma, respectively. Golden retrievers in the US show significantly elevated lifetime risk for both B-cell lymphoma (6%) and hemangiosarcoma (20%). We conducted genome-wide association studies for hemangiosarcoma and B-cell lymphoma, identifying two shared predisposing loci. The two associated loci are located on chromosome 5, and together contribute similar to 20% of the risk of developing these cancers. Genome-wide p-values for the top SNP of each locus are 4.6x10(-7) and 2.7x10(-6), respectively. Whole genome resequencing of nine cases and controls followed by genotyping and detailed analysis identified three shared and one B-cell lymphoma specific risk haplotypes within the two loci, but no coding changes were associated with the risk haplotypes. Gene expression analysis of B-cell lymphoma tumors revealed that carrying the risk haplotypes at the first locus is associated with down-regulation of several nearby genes including the proximal gene TRPC6, a transient receptor Ca2+-channel involved in T-cell activation, among other functions. The shared risk haplotype in the second locus overlaps the vesicle transport and release gene STX8. Carrying the shared risk haplotype is associated with gene expression changes of 100 genes enriched for pathways involved in immune cell activation. Thus, the predisposing germ-line mutations in B-cell lymphoma and hemangio-sarcoma appear to be regulatory, and affect pathways involved in T-cell mediated immune response in the tumor. This suggests that the interaction between the immune system and malignant cells plays a common role in the tumorigenesis of these relatively different cancers.
