  • The experimental facility for the Search for Hidden Particles at the CERN SPS
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 1748-0221. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has shown that the CERN SPS accelerator with its 400 GeV/c proton beam offers a unique opportunity to explore the Hidden Sector [1-3]. The proposed experiment is an intensity frontier experiment which is capable of searching for hidden particles through both visible decays and through scattering signatures from recoil of electrons or nuclei. The high-intensity experimental facility developed by the SHiP Collaboration is based on a number of key features and developments which provide the possibility of probing a large part of the parameter space for a wide range of models with light long-lived super-weakly interacting particles with masses up to O(10) GeV/c(2) in an environment of extremely clean background conditions. This paper describes the proposal for the experimental facility together with the most important feasibility studies. The paper focuses on the challenging new ideas behind the beam extraction and beam delivery, the proton beam dump, and the suppression of beam-induced background.

  • The active muon shield in the SHiP experiment
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The SHiP experiment is designed to search for very weakly interacting particles beyond the Standard Model which are produced in a 400 GeV/c proton beam dump at the CERN SPS. An essential task for the experiment is to keep the Standard Model background level to less than 0.1 event after 2 x 10(20) protons on target. In the beam dump, around 10(11) muons will be produced per second. The muon rate in the spectrometer has to be reduced by at least four orders of magnitude to avoid muon-induced combinatorial background. A novel active muon shield is used to magnetically deflect the muons out of the acceptance of the spectrometer. This paper describes the basic principle of such a shield, its optimization and its performance.

  • Environmental pressure from the 2014–15 eruption of Bárðarbunga volcano, Iceland
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Geochemical Perspectives Letters. - : European Association of Geochemistry. - 2410-3403 .- 2410-339X. ; 1:2015, s. 84 - 93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effusive six months long 2014-2015 Bárðarbunga eruption (31 August-27 February) was the largest in Iceland for more than 200 years, producing 1.6 ± 0.3 km3 of lava. The total SO2 emission was 11 ± 5 Mt, more than the amount emitted from Europe in 2011. The ground level concentration of SO2 exceeded the 350 μg m−3 hourly average health limit over much of Iceland for days to weeks. Anomalously high SO2 concentrations were also measured at several locations in Europe in September. The lowest pH of fresh snowmelt at the eruption site was 3.3, and 3.2 in precipitation 105 km away from the source. Elevated dissolved H2SO4, HCl, HF, and metal concentrations were measured in snow and precipitation. Environmental pressures from the eruption and impacts on populated areas were reduced by its remoteness, timing, and the weather. The anticipated primary environmental pressure is on the surfacewaters, soils, and vegetation of Iceland.

  • An open-access database and analysis tool for perovskite solar cells based on the FAIR data principles
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Energy. - : Springer Nature. - 2058-7546. ; 7:1, s. 107-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Large datasets are now ubiquitous as technology enables higher-throughput experiments, but rarely can a research field truly benefit from the research data generated due to inconsistent formatting, undocumented storage or improper dissemination. Here we extract all the meaningful device data from peer-reviewed papers on metal-halide perovskite solar cells published so far and make them available in a database. We collect data from over 42,400 photovoltaic devices with up to 100 parameters per device. We then develop open-source and accessible procedures to analyse the data, providing examples of insights that can be gleaned from the analysis of a large dataset. The database, graphics and analysis tools are made available to the community and will continue to evolve as an open-source initiative. This approach of extensively capturing the progress of an entire field, including sorting, interactive exploration and graphical representation of the data, will be applicable to many fields in materials science, engineering and biosciences.

  • The effect of packaging material on the sensory properties of broccoli.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: ISHS Acta Horticulturae. - 0567-7572. ; 599, s. 323-323
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three different commercially available polymeric films were studied to determine their effect on the sensory properties of fresh broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. Italica cv. ‘Marathon’). The polymer materials investigated were oriented polypropylene (OPP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and one low density polyethylene (LDPE) which contained an ethylene absorber. The fresh broccoli was packaged and stored for one week at 10°C or 3 days at 4°C followed by 4 days at 10°C. The oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations inside the packages were monitored during storage. After storage the broccoli was evaluated according to sensory analyses, i.e. triangle test and quantitative descriptive analysis, by an analytical panel. The panel judged the broccoli according to smell, taste, texture and appearance. The triangle test showed significant differences between the smell of the broccoli samples, stored in the different packaging materials, when cooked. However, no differences between the raw broccoli, stored in the different packaging materials could be detected. The quantitative descriptive analysis showed that the following attributes; fresh smell and taste, chewing resistance, and crispness, differed significantly between the packaged broccoli when cooked. The appearance was shown to be the sensory property of broccoli most affected by the storage conditions, i.e. packaging material used and storage temperature. The results indicated the importance of the packaging material for maintaining the broccoli quality. However, one packaging material that was able to maintain all the studied sensory properties could not be identified.

  • Phase behavior and ionic conductivity in LiTFSI doped ionic liquids of the pyrrolidinium cation and TFSI anion
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry B. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5207 .- 1520-6106. ; 113:32, s. 11247-11251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phase behavior and the ionic conductivity of ionic liquids (ILs) of the N-alkyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium (PYR xy ) cation and the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anion are investigated upon addition of LiTFSI salt. We compare the case of two new ILs of the PYR 2y cation (where 2 is ethyl and y is butyl or propyl) with that of the PYR 14 (where 1 is methyl and 4 is butyl). We find that the addition of LiTFSI increases the glass transition temperature, decreases the melting temperature and the heat of fusion and, in the ILs of the PYR 2y family, suppresses crystallization. In the solid state, significant ionic conductivities are found, being as high as 10 -5 Scm -1 , strongly increasing with Li + concentration. The opposite trend is found in the liquid state, where the conductivity is on the order of 10 -3 -10 -2 Scm -1 at room temperature. A T g -scaled Arrhenius plot shows that the liquid-state ionic conductivity in these systems is mainly governed by viscosity and that the fragility of the liquids is slightly influenced by the structural modifications on the cation. © 2009 American Chemical Society.

  • Valence Level Character in a Mixed Perovskite Material and Determination of the Valence Band Maximum from Photoelectron Spectroscopy : Variation with Photon Energy
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 121:48, s. 26655-26666
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A better understanding of the electronic structure of perovskite materials used in photovoltaic devices is essential for their development and optimization. In this investigation, synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) was used to experimentally delineate the character and energy position of the valence band structures of a mixed perovskite. The valence band was measured using PES with photon energies ranging from ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (21.2 eV) to hard X-rays (up to 4000 eV), and by taking the variation of the photoionization cross sections into account, we could experimentally determine the inorganic and organic contributions. The experiments were compared to theoretical calculations to further distinguish the role of the different anions in the electronic structure. This work also includes a thorough study of the valence band maximum and its position in relation to the Fermi level, which is crucial for the design and optimization of complete solar cells and their functional properties.

  • 2-Terminal CIGS-perovskite tandem cells : A layer by layer exploration
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Solar Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0038-092X .- 1471-1257. ; 207, s. 270-288
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on the development of 2-terminal CIGS-perovskite tandem solar cells by exploring a range of stack sequences and synthetic procedures for depositing the associated layers. In the end, we converged at a stack sequence composed of SLG/Mo/CIGS/CdS/i-ZnO/ZnO:Al/NiO/PTAA/Perovskite/LiF/PCBM/SnO2/ITO. With this architecture, we reached performances only about 1% lower than the corresponding 4-terminal tandem cells, thus demonstrating functional interconnects between the two sub-cells while grown monolithically on top of each other. We go through the stack, layer-by-layer, discussing their deposition and the results, from which we can conclude what works, what does not work, and what potentially could work after additional modifications. The challenges for a successful 2-terminal tandem device include: how to deal with, or decrease, the surface roughness of the CIGS-stack, how to obtain uniform coverage of the layers between the CIGS and the perovskite while also obtaining a benign interface chemistry, and how to tune the band gaps of both the CIGS and the perovskite to obtain good optical matching. The investigation was based on CIGS with a power conversion efficiency around 14%, and perovskites with an efficiency around 12%, resulting in 2-terminal tandem cells with efficiencies of 15–16%. The results indicate that by using higher performing CIGS and perovskite sub-cells, it should be possible to manufacture highly efficient 2-terminal CIGS-perovskite tandem devices by using the protocols, principles, and procedures developed and discussed in this paper.
