  • Neutrino follow-up with the Zwicky transient facility : results from the first 24 campaigns
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 521:4, s. 5046-5063
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) performs a systematic neutrino follow-up programme, searching for optical counterparts to high-energy neutrinos with dedicated Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) observations. Since first light in March 2018, ZTF has taken prompt observations for 24 high-quality neutrino alerts from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, with a median latency of 12.2 h from initial neutrino detection. From two of these campaigns, we have already reported tidal disruption event (TDE) AT 2019dsg and likely TDE AT 2019fdr as probable counterparts, suggesting that TDEs contribute >7.8 per cent of the astrophysical neutrino flux. We here present the full results of our programme through to December 2021. No additional candidate neutrino sources were identified by our programme, allowing us to place the first constraints on the underlying optical luminosity function of astrophysical neutrino sources. Transients with optical absolutes magnitudes brighter that -21 can contribute no more than 87 per cent of the total, while transients brighter than -22 can contribute no more than 58 per cent of the total, neglecting the effect of extinction and assuming they follow the star formation rate. These are the first observational constraints on the neutrino emission of bright populations such as superluminous supernovae. None of the neutrinos were coincident with bright optical AGN flares comparable to that observed for TXS 0506+056/IC170922A, with such optical blazar flares producing no more than 26 per cent of the total neutrino flux. We highlight the outlook for electromagnetic neutrino follow-up programmes, including the expected potential for the Rubin Observatory.

  • Collaborative challenges and barriers when planning and implementing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) : Lessons from Swedish BRT projects
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Urban, Planning and Transport Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2165-0020. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to improve the knowledge of collaborative challenges when planning and implementing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Collaborative challenges are here understood as the barriers that may arise in BRT planning and implementation as a consequence of several formally independent actors, occasionally with different interests, participating in the planning. The results are based on an analysis of actor interactions in Swedish BRT projects. These projects are analysed in relation to the state of the art in the research field of collaborative approaches. The results show two main and interrelated collaborative challenges. The first category of challenges concerns difficulties for actors in creating a common understanding of what a BRT system is, the second category concerns details of bus priority measures, e.g. busways, priority at intersections, and how to handle and deal with conflicting interests when removing speed bumps or pedestrian and cycle crossings. In terms of policy is in the early stages of the planning processes. This can be generated by working practices and tools that facilitate agreements on how to handle different interests and trade-offs. BRT guidelines adapted to national transport policy, legal and organisational conditions could function as tools in assisting actor dialogue.

  • Discovery of drug–omics associations in type 2 diabetes with generative deep-learning models
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Biotechnology. - : Springer Nature. - 1087-0156 .- 1546-1696. ; 41:3, s. 399-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The application of multiple omics technologies in biomedical cohorts has the potential to reveal patient-level disease characteristics and individualized response to treatment. However, the scale and heterogeneous nature of multi-modal data makes integration and inference a non-trivial task. We developed a deep-learning-based framework, multi-omics variational autoencoders (MOVE), to integrate such data and applied it to a cohort of 789 people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes with deep multi-omics phenotyping from the DIRECT consortium. Using in silico perturbations, we identified drug–omics associations across the multi-modal datasets for the 20 most prevalent drugs given to people with type 2 diabetes with substantially higher sensitivity than univariate statistical tests. From these, we among others, identified novel associations between metformin and the gut microbiota as well as opposite molecular responses for the two statins, simvastatin and atorvastatin. We used the associations to quantify drug–drug similarities, assess the degree of polypharmacy and conclude that drug effects are distributed across the multi-omics modalities.

  • Increased rates of fragrance allergy in fibromyalgia individuals tested with the Swedish baseline patch test series
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. - : Wiley. - 0926-9959 .- 1468-3083. ; 37:1, s. 104-113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Contact allergy can manifest in a variety of ways clinically. Systemic contact allergy may occasionally present with pain in muscles and joints. Fibromyalgia is a chronic rheumatic disease characterized by pain and with virtually unknown aetiology. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the contact allergy rates to the sensitizers in a baseline series and compare with corresponding rates in dermatitis patients and the general population. Methods: Patch testing with the Swedish baseline series was performed in 120 individuals with fibromyalgia. Fisher's exact test was used for pair-wise comparisons of contact allergy rates between the fibromyalgia group and two control groups, dermatitis patients and individuals in the general population. Results: Contact allergy was significantly more common in the fibromyalgia group compared to the general population concerning nickel and the fragrance markers Myroxolon pereirae and fragrance mix I. There were fewer allergic reactions to preservatives in the fibromyalgia group compared with the dermatitis group. Conclusions: Myroxolon pereirae and fragrance mix I represent besides fragrance allergy also allergy to flavouring substances which indicate that oral exposure to flavouring substances and hygiene products might be important for sensitization and possibly elicitation of systemic contact allergy symptoms in fibromyalgia individuals.

  • Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 supplementation and SARS-CoV-2 specific antibody response in healthy adults : a randomized, triple-blinded, placebo-controlled trial
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Gut microbes. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1949-0976 .- 1949-0984. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies have shown that probiotics can decrease the symptoms of respiratory tract infections as well as increase antibody responses following certain vaccinations. We examined the effect of probiotic supplementation on anti-SARS-CoV-2 specific antibody responses upon SARS-CoV-2 infection as well as after COVID-19 vaccination. In this randomized, triple-blinded, placebo-controlled intervention study with a parallel design, 159 healthy adults without prior SARS-CoV-2 infection or COVID-19 vaccination and any known risk factors for severe COVID-19 were randomly allocated into two study arms. The active treatment arm consumed a probiotic product containing a minimum of 1 × 108 colony-forming units of Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 + 10 μg vitamin D3 twice daily for 6 months. The placebo arm consumed identical tablets containing only 10 μg vitamin D3. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 specific antibodies and virus neutralizing antibody titers were analyzed from blood samples collected at baseline, after 3 months, and after 6 months. Differences in serum antibody titers between the two study arms were tested with independent t-test using log-transformed values. In the intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis, SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals in the active treatment arm (n = 6) tended to have higher serum anti-spike IgG (609 [168-1480] BAU/ml vs 111 [36.1-1210] BAU/ml, p = 0.080) and anti-receptor binding domain (RBD) IgG (928 [212-3449] BAU/ml vs (83.7 [22.8-2094] BAU/ml, p = 0.066) levels than individuals in the placebo arm (n = 6). Considering individuals who were fully vaccinated with mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines, the active treatment arm (n = 10) exhibited significantly higher serum levels of anti-RBD IgA (135 [32.9-976] BAU/ml vs 61.3 [26.7-97.1] BAU/ml, p = 0.036) than the placebo arm (n = 7) >28 days postvaccination. Supplementation with specific probiotics might improve the long-term efficacy of mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines via enhanced IgA response.

  • Uncovering a population of gravitational lens galaxies with magnified standard candle SN Zwicky
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Astronomy. - 2397-3366. ; 7:9, s. 1098-1107
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detecting gravitationally lensed supernovae is among the biggest challenges in astronomy. It involves a combination of two very rare phenomena: catching the transient signal of a stellar explosion in a distant galaxy and observing it through a nearly perfectly aligned foreground galaxy that deflects light towards the observer. Here we describe how high-cadence optical observations with the Zwicky Transient Facility, with its unparalleled large field of view, led to the detection of a multiply imaged type Ia supernova, SN Zwicky, also known as SN 2022qmx. Magnified nearly 25-fold, the system was found thanks to the standard candle nature of type Ia supernovae. High-spatial-resolution imaging with the Keck telescope resolved four images of the supernova with very small angular separation, corresponding to an Einstein radius of only θE = 0.167″ and almost identical arrival times. The small θE and faintness of the lensing galaxy are very unusual, highlighting the importance of supernovae to fully characterize the properties of galaxy-scale gravitational lenses, including the impact of galaxy substructures.

  • Evaluation of the diagnostic and prognostic potential of optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the pulmonary arteries during standardised right heart catheterisation in patients with pulmonary hypertension : a cross-sectional single-centre experience
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cardiovascular Diagnosis and Therapy. - 2223-3652. ; 13:3, s. 453-464
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is diagnosed based on an invasive evaluation of the mean pulmonary artery (PA) pressure. The morphological assessment of the pulmonary arteries was only recently not feasible. With the advent of optical coherence tomography (OCT)-imaging, an accessible tool allows to study PA morphology longitudinally. The primary hypothesis was that OCT distincts the PA structure of PH patients from control subjects. The secondary hypothesis was that PA wall thickness (WT) correlates with the progression of PH. Methods: This is a retrospective monocentric study of 28 paediatric patients with (PH group) and without PH (control group) who had undergone cardiac catheterisation including OCT imaging of the PA branches. OCT parameters analysed were WT and the quotient of WT and diameter (WT/DM) and those were compared between the PH group and the control group. In addition, the OCT parameters were aligned with the haemodynamic parameters to evaluate the potential of OCT as a risk factor for patients with PH. Results: WT and WT/DM in the PH group were significantly higher compared to the control group {WT: 0.150 [0.230, range (R): 0.100–0.330] vs. 0.100 [0.050, R: 0.080–0.130] mm, P<0.001; WT/DM: 0.06 [0.05] vs. 0.03 [0.01], P=0.006}. There were highly significant correlations between WT and WT/DM with the haemodynamic parameters mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) [Spearman correlation coefficient (rs) =0.702, P<0.001; rs=0.621, P<0.001], systolic pulmonary arterial pressure (sPAP) (rs=0.668, P<0.001; rs=0.658, P<0.001) and WT and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) (rs=0.590, P=0.02). Also, there was a significant correlation between WT and WT/DM and the risk factors quotient of mPAP and mean systemic arterial pressure (mSAP) (mPAP/mSAP) (rs=0.686, P<0.001; rs=0.644, P<0.001) and pulmonary vascular resistance index (PVRI) (rs=0.758, P=0.002; rs=0.594, P=0.02). Conclusions: OCT can detect significant differences in WT of the PA in patients with PH. Furthermore, the OCT parameters correlate significantly with haemodynamic parameters and risk factors for patients with PH. More investigations are required to evaluate to what extent the impact of OCT can contribute to the clinical care of children with PH.
