  • Mitochondrial genomes from Bronze Age Poland reveal genetic continuity from the Late Neolithic and additional genetic affinities with the steppe populations
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Physical Anthropology. - : Wiley. - 0002-9483 .- 1096-8644. ; 172:2, s. 176-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: In this work we aim to investigate the origins and genetic affinities of Bronze Age populations (2,400-1,100 BC) from the region of southern Poland and to trace maternal kinship patterns present in the burials of those populations by the use of complete mitochondrial genomes.Materials and methods: We performed ancient DNA analyses for Bronze Age individuals from present-day Poland associated with the Strzy(z) over dotow culture, the Mierzanowice culture, and the Trzciniec Cultural circle. To obtain complete mitochondrial genomes, we sequenced genomic libraries using Illumina platform. Additionally, hybridization capture was used to enrich some of the samples for mitochondrial DNA. AMS C-14-dating was conducted for 51 individuals to verify chronological and cultural attribution of the analyzed samples. Results: Complete ancient mitochondrial genomes were generated for 80 of the Bronze Age individuals from present-day Poland. The results of the population genetic analyses indicate close maternal genetic affinity between Mierzanowice, Trzciniec, and Corded Ware culture-associated populations. This is in contrast to the genetically more distant Strzy(z) over dotow people that displayed closer maternal genetic relation to steppe populations associated with the preceding Yamnaya culture and Catacomb culture, and with later Scythians. Potential maternal kinship relations were identified in burials of Mierzanowice and Trzciniec populations analyzed in this study.Discussion: Results revealed genetic continuity from the Late Neolithic Corded Ware groups to Bronze Age Mierzanowice and Trzciniec-associated populations, and possible additional genetic contribution from the steppe to the formation of the Strzy(z) over dotow-associated group at the end of 3rd millennium BC. Mitochondrial patterns indicated several pairs of potentially maternally related individuals mostly in Trzciniec-associated group.

  • Beyond Moral Teaching : Financial Literacy as Citizenship Education
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores what financial literacy is, what financial literacy becomes and what financial literacy could become within the context of a citizenship education such as the Swedish upper secondary subject of social studies.  Financial literacy does not intuitively converge with social sciences which leaves social studies teachers to both teach and realise financial literacy. Thus, teachers become co-creators of financial literacy as a school subject. This thesis explores this process via two different studies resulting in four research articles. In the first study, semi-structured interviews – analysed through PCK – are used to explore the perceptions of Swedish social studies teachers in upper secondary school regarding financial literacy teaching and learning. The findings include differences between experienced and novice teachers regarding which content knowledge and pedagogical approaches they use. However, all teachers express difficulties fitting financial literacy into social studies, mainly due to a perception of financial literacy primarily being a private matter, along with the unclear relationship between financial and societal issues. The second study is designed as a financial literacy teaching intervention. Students’ views on a financial dilemma are analysed using citizenship conceptions and threshold concepts. The findings are used to discuss design principles for financial literacy teaching. Salient conclusions in the thesis include citizenship education being able to frame financial literacy and provide epistemic features which can make financial literacy more teachable and learnable. It is hoped that the results from this thesis can inform future financial literacy teaching design as well as policy discussion related to financial literacy teaching and learning contextualised with another subject, especially citizenship education.

  • Class-size effects on adolescents' mental health and well-being in Swedish schools
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Education Economics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0964-5292 .- 1469-5782. ; 21:3, s. 248-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes whether class size has an effect on the prevalence of mental health problems and well-being among adolescents in Swedish schools. We use cross-sectional data collected in year 2008 covering 2755 Swedish adolescents in ninth grade from 40 schools and 159 classes. We utilize different econometric approaches to address potential between- and within-school endogeneity including school-fixed effects and regression discontinuity approaches. Our results indicate no robust effects of class size on the prevalence of mental health problems and well-being, and we cannot reject the hypothesis that class size has no effect on mental health and well-being at all.

  • Överdrivna slutsatser om gymnasieelevers demokratikunskaper
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Skola & Samhälle [S.O.S] Webbtidskrift. - : Föreningen Skola & Samhälle - webbtidskrift. - 2001-6727.

  • EU tree density limitations, socio-ecological paradoxes and farmers’ management of woody pastures in Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: World Congress Silvo-Pastoral Systems 2016 Silvo-Pastoral Systems in a changing world: functions, management and people. Portugal, Évora, 27th to 30th September 2016.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Silvo-pastoral systems are threatened worldwide by agricultural intensification and abandonment, leading to homogenised rural landscapes. Nevertheless, numerous lifeforms in these landscapes depend upon trees for their survival and silvo-pastoral habitats are therefore essential habitats for biodiversity conservation. Society also puts faith in multiple values of trees, ranging from climate change mitigation to socio-cultural traditions and views of the landscape. Therefore, the seemingly arbitrary and paradoxical tree density limit for pasture environments imposed by the EU through its Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) may put both biological and societal values aside. In this study, we target the effects of the CAP tree density limit on management and biodiversity of woody pastures in a low-intensively managed agricultural landscape of southern Sweden. The case of simplifying nature by using simple number limitations is used as an entry point for talking with farmers about their relationship to trees and how the management of woody pastures is influenced by policy directives. We made semi-structured, open-ended interviews with seventeen farmers and three officials working with the subsidy system and counselling. We put this in relation to previous work on biodiversity, including trees, plants and birds, in woody pastures within the same area. The interviews show that the new policy incentive shifted the management focus from grazing quality to the number of trees. The farmers are willing to cut in order to get subsidies and timber revenues, however not unreflectingly. Interesting overlaps were found between the tree species preferred by the farmers, with reference to aesthetics and traditions, and official recommendations based on biological values. Another reason for leaving trees was the care of grazing animals as they used certain tree groups as shelter. This insight further reveals the difficulties of managing the complex relations within landscapes with simplified legal measures. In the study area, woody pastures with high tree densities contribute substantially to biodiversity as species with different characteristics and tolerance/dependency of trees can co-exist in the heterogeneous environments. However, with this study we show that high biological values are not the only incentive to preserve trees in pastures. Farmers know the wide ranging social, cultural and natural values of trees, and may often themselves be as good regulators of tree management as policies intend to be. These results demonstrate a mismatch between subsidy systems, management and biodiversity of woody pastures that needs to be further scrutinised to preserve the high socio-ecological values of agricultural landscapes.
