  • High-resolution Late Silurian correlations between Gotland, Sweden and the Broken River region, NE Australia: Lithologies, conodonts and isotopes
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0031-0182 .- 1872-616X. ; 245:1-2, s. 115-137
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-resolution correlations, partly with a precision better than 10 ka, are achieved between late Ludfordian sequences on Gotland, Sweden (on Baltica), and a section (COG) through the Coral Gardens Formation along the Broken River, northeastern Australia (on Gondwana), despite these sections having been on different palaeocontinents facing different oceans. The interval is characterised by rapid, very large faunal, isotopic, and lithologic changes. Lithologies are remarkably similar in the two areas, consisting of, in order from below: marls with thin limestone beds, flaggy limestones, oncoidal crinoidal limestone, oncoidal marls, terrigenous clastics (silty clay, mudstone, sandstone), oolite, and cliff-/gorge-forming limestones. Further, independent correlation dates several of the lithological changes as coeval. The 813 C excursion in whole rock carbonates is one of the three largest ones known during the Phanerozoic. The increase in delta C-13 is very similar in the two areas, from below + 1 parts per thousand to c. + 9 parts per thousand VPDB though two Gotland samples yielded + 9.71 parts per thousand and + 10.54 parts per thousand (the corresponding COG interval included fewer carbonate layers than needed to definitely exclude that this difference is due to a lack of suitable rocks for sampling). Compared with the lithologies and the delta C-13 curves, the conodont faunas display some divergence, but key taxa permit precise correlations for much of the studied interval. The conodont assemblages change stepwise from very diverse in the Polygnathoides siluricus Zone to a low diversity fauna dominated markedly by a single taxon (Upper Icriodontid Subzone), returning abruptly to a comparatively diverse Ozarkodina snajdri Zone fauna. A method resembling graphic correlation in some respects is used to propose a similarly high-resolution correlation through a longer interval for future testing. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. • New Short-Lived Isotope 221U and the Mass Surface Near N=126
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 115:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two short-lived isotopes 221U and 222U were produced as evaporation residues in the fusion reaction 50Ti+176Yb at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. An α decay with an energy of Eα=9.31(5) MeV and half-life T1/2=4.7(7) μs was attributed to 222U. The new isotope 221U was identified in α-decay chains starting with Eα=9.71(5) MeV and T1/2=0.66(14) μs leading to known daughters. Synthesis and detection of these unstable heavy nuclei and their descendants were achieved thanks to a fast data readout system. The evolution of the N=126 shell closure and its influence on the stability of uranium isotopes are discussed within the framework of α-decay reduced width.

  • The significance of bicuspid aortic valve after surgery for acute type A aortic dissection
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-5223 .- 1097-685X. ; 159:3, s. 760-767.e3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Decision-making concerning the extent of the repair of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) includes functional and anatomical assessment of the aortic valve. We hypothesized that bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) does not impact outcome after surgery for ATAAD. We therefore evaluated the outcome after ATAAD surgery in relation to the presence of BAV, acute aortic regurgitation (AR), and surgical approach, using the Nordic Consortium for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection database. Methods: Eight participating Nordic centers collected data from 1122 patients undergoing ATAAD surgery during the years 2005 to 2014. Early complications, reoperations and survival were compared between patients with BAV and tricuspid aortic valves (TAV) before and after propensity score matching for sex, age, AR, organ malperfusion, hemodynamic instability, and site of the tear. Mean follow-up (range) for patients with TAV and BAV was 3.1 years (0-10.4 years) and 3.2 years (0-9.0 years), respectively. Results: Altogether, 65 (5.8%) of the patients had BAV. Root replacement was more frequently performed in the BAV as compared with the TAV group (60% vs 23%, P <.001). Survival, however, did not differ significantly between patients with BAV or TAV, either before (P =.230) or after propensity score-matching (P =.812). Even so, in cohort as a whole, patients presenting with AR had less favorable survival. Conclusions: Early and mid-term survival did not differ significantly between patients with BAV and TAV. © 2019 The American Association for Thoracic Surgery

  • Temperature effects on incidence of surgery for acute type A aortic dissection in the Nordics
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Global health action. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1654-9880 .- 1654-9880 .- 1654-9716. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We aimed to investigate a hypothesised association between daily mean temperature and the risk of surgery for acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). For the period of 1 January 2005 until 31 December 2019, we collected daily data on mean temperatures and date of 2995 operations for ATAAD at 10 Nordic cities included in the Nordic Consortium for Acute Type A Aortic Dissection (NORCAAD) collaboration. Using a two-stage time-series approach, we investigated the association between hot and cold temperatures relative to the optimal temperature and the rate of ATAAD repair in the selected cities. The relative risks (RRs) of cold temperatures (<=-5 degrees C) and hot temperatures (>= 21 degrees C) compared to optimal temperature were 1.47 (95% CI: 0.72-2.99) and 1.43 (95% CI: 0.67-3.08), respectively. In line with previous studies, we observed increased risk at cold and hot temperatures. However, the observed associations were not statistically significant, thus only providing weak evidence of an association.

  • Gestational diabetes mellitus and fetal death in Mozambique: an incident case-referent study
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 1600-0412 .- 0001-6349. ; 81:6, s. 560-563
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. Third trimester fetal death is a common problem in Mozambique, occurring in approximately 5% of parturient women. Objective. To elucidate the magnitude of the gestational diabetes mellitus problem, and to estimate its prevalence in a group of women with unexplained late fetal deaths and in women with live fetuses (referents). Methods. An incident case-referent study of 109 pregnant Mozambican women with fetal deaths and 110 women delivering liveborns, regarding fasting B-glucose, oral glucose tolerance test and glycosylated hemoglobin. Result. The difference in gestational diabetes mellitus prevalence in the two groups is not significant. The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus was high in both groups: 11% and 7%, respectively.
