  • Nanoscratch Testing of 3Al2O3·2SiO2 EBCs : Assessment of Induced Damage and Estimation of Adhesion Strength
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Ceramics. - : MDPI AG. - 2571-6131. ; 6:1, s. 664-677
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, the structural integrity of mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) films, deposited on silicon carbide (SiC) substrates using chemical vapor deposition (CVD), was investigated via increasing load nanoscratch tests. The films were configured by mullite columns of stoichiometric composition growing from a silica-rich layer in contact with the SiC substrate. Controlled damage was induced in the 3Al2O3·2SiO2 films at relatively low scratch loads. Radial and lateral cracking were applied until final delamination and repeated chipping were achieved as the load increased. The intrinsic integrity of the 3Al2O3∙2SiO2 film and the performance of the coated 3Al2O3·2SiO2/SiC system, regarded as a structural unit, were analyzed. With the aid of advanced characterization techniques at the surface and subsurface levels, the configuration and morphology of the damage induced in the coated system by the nanoscratch tests were characterized, and the scratch damage micromechanisms were identified. Finally, the adhesion of the film, in terms of energy of adhesion and interfacial fracture toughness, was determined using different models proposed in the literature. The results from this investigation contribute to the understanding of the mechanical performance and structural integrity of EBC/SiC-based systems, which over the past few years have increasingly been implemented in novel applications for gas turbines and aircraft engines.

  • Childhood maltreatment and social functioning in psychotic disorders : a systematic review protocol
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Psychotraumatology. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2000-8198 .- 2000-8066. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is thought to play a key role in the etiology and course of psychotic disorders (PD). In addition, CM is related to neurobiological and clinical characteristics that can lead to poor social functioning. However, the extent to which CM and social functioning are directly associated in individuals with PD, is unclear. Therefore, we aim to systematically review the literature to provide an estimate on the strength of the association between CM and different domains of social functioning in PD and to summarize potential moderators and mediators of this association. Methods and analysis: To identify relevant studies, we will systematically search the following databases: Pubmed (Medline), PsycInfo, Embase, Web of Science (Core Collection), and Pilots (trauma), manually search reference lists and contact experts in the field. Studies will be included if they investigate and report on the association between CM (exposure) and social functioning (outcome) in adults with PD. Two independent reviewers will screen titles, abstracts and full texts according to eligibility criteria, perform data extraction and assess study quality according to a modified version of the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Analysis: Effect estimates will be pooled in a meta-analysis. Heterogeneity and publication bias will be assessed and the effects of potential moderators (genetic factors, type of diagnosis, duration of illness, type of CM and age at the time of CM exposure) will be analyzed using meta-regressions. Candidate moderators and mediators (neurocognition, cognitive schemas, comorbidities, stress sensitivity, attachment) will be also examined qualitatively. Ethics and dissemination: Because this review will make use of already published data, ethical approval will not be sought. This work has the potential to inform upcoming investigations on the association between the exposure to CM in PD and social functioning. • Steel-based functionally gradient materials obtained via Electron Beam Melting
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proc. Alloys for Additive Manufacturing Symposium AAMS2019.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent developments in metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies have introduced great capabilities unparalleled by conventional manufacturing, not only in achieving freeform geometries, but also in opening new possibilities to tailor the microstructure/properties of materials by controlling process parameters. Electron Beam Melting (EBM) is one of the most important members of the Powder Bed Fusion(PBF) family; it uses a focused electron beam to melt metal powder in a layer by layer approach. One of the main challenges that EBM faces nowadays is the lack of commercially available materials (most of them are Ti-based or Ni-based alloys). Therefore, there is a strong interest to further develop the process for new materials, including steel-based ones. In this investigation two steel-based powders; stainless steel 316L and a tool steel developed by Uddeholm, were used to manufacture functionally graded materials. A special hardware setup using a single powder dispenser was installed in the EBM system, where powders were placed separately to manufacture 10x10x10 mm cubes. SEM images of the specimens’ polished cross sections show a gradual microstructural transition from characteristic 316L one on the bottom of the specimens to the tool steel towards the top. Nanoindentation experiments confirmed a consequent gradient in hardness and elastic modulus, which gradually increase towards top surface. These results show great possibilities to tailor microstructure and mechanical properties by combining different powders in the EBM technology. Potential applications include the tooling industry, where hard and wear-resistant materials are demanded on the surface whether tougher and more ductile behavior is desirable on the core of the tool.

  • Assessing the viability of high-frequency spot melting for super duplex stainless steel 2507 via electron beam powder bed fusion
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Research and Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 2238-7854 .- 2214-0697. ; 27, s. 5720-5728
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates the use of Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-EB) spot melting on SDSS 2507, a material known for its high tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and welding properties. Spot melting, a localized melting technique, utilize a stationary beam to create melt pools before rapidly repositioning to form new ones, offering precise control over material properties in additive manufacturing. We conducted a design of experiments with 32 samples and analysed them using SEM, XRD, EBSD, optical microscopy, nanoindentation and statistical modelling. Elevated PBF-EB processing temperatures significantly influence microstructure and phase composition. XRD analysis identified the presence of the detrimental sigma phase. EBSD analysis revealed a composition primarily consisting of austenite (63 %) and sigma phase (33.5 %), with residual ferrite (3.5 %). Statistical modelling demonstrated that a combination of spot-time, spot distance, focus offset, and layer thickness was the most reliable predictor for density while area energy proved to be the most accurate predictor for hardness, with R2adj values of 0.766 and 0.802, respectively. Our study confirms that PBF-EB is capable of processing SDSS 2507 through spot melting, resulting in high-density samples at high productivity rates. The presence of sigma phase shows a need for post build heat treatment to achieve the desired phase distribution. This research enhances the understanding of the process and also holds promise for industrial applications.
