  • Particle physics at the European Spallation Source
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics reports. - : Elsevier. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 1023, s. 1-84
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world’s brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. These encompass the exploitation of both the neutrons and neutrinos produced at the ESS for high precision (sensitivity) measurements (searches).

  • Technical design report for the PANDA (AntiProton Annihilations at Darmstadt) Straw Tube Tracker
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 49:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.

  • Adsorption Behavior and Adhesive Properties of Biopolyelectrolyte Multilayers formed from Cationic and Anionic Starch
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Biomacromolecules. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1525-7797 .- 1526-4602. ; 10:7, s. 1768-1776
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cationic starch (D.S. 0.065) and anionic starch (D.S. 0.037) were used to form biopolyelectrolyte multilayers. The influence of the solution concentration of NaCl on the adsorption of starch onto silicon oxide substrates and on the formation of multilayers was investigated using stagnation point adsorption reflectometry (SPAR) and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The wet adhesive properties of the starch multilayers were examined by measuring pull-off forces with the AFM colloidal probe technique. It was shown that polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM) can be successfully constructed from cationic starch and anionic starch at electrolyte concentrations of 1 mM NaCl and 10 mM NaCl. The water content of the PEMs was approximately 80% at both electrolyte concentrations. However, the thickness of the PEMs formed at 10 mM NaCl was approximately twice the thickness formed at I mM NaCl. The viscoelastic properties of the starch PEMs, modeled as Voigt elements, were dependent on the polyelectrolyte that was adsorbed in the outermost layer. The PEMs appeared to be more rigid when capped by anionic starch than when capped by cationic starch. The wet adhesive pull-off forces increased with layer number and were also dependent oil the polyelectrolyte adsorbed in the outermost layer. Thus, starch PEM treatment has a large potential for increasing the adhesive interaction between solid substrates to levels higher than can be reached by a single layer of cationic starch.

  • On Communication and Flocking in Multi-Robot Systems
  • 2007
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Coordination of multi-robot systems to improve communication and achieve flocking is the topic of this thesis. Methods are proposed for mobile autonomous robots to follow trajectories in a way that improves communications with a base station. Further, a decentralized algorithm is presented that yields flocking with obstacle avoidance. The communication-aware trajectory tracking is adapted to radio communication in indoor environments. Our experimental data show that the effect of multipath fading, well-known in the radio communication literature, causes significant variations in the signal strength between a mobile robot and a base station. A contribution of this thesis is to formulate a tradeoff between tracking a reference trajectory and maintaining communication, first for a stationary reference position and then for a general trajectory. For the general case, the robot and an onboard communication buffer are modelled as a hybrid system, switching between standing still to communicate at positions with good signal strength and driving to catch up with the reference. This problem is solved using relaxed dynamic programming. For the case of a stationary reference position, experimental validation shows that loss of communication is avoided and that the method yields a gain in signal strength. The algorithm for flocking is based on Voronoi partitions. They can be approximated using only local information and allow the agents to avoid collisions. Our contribution is to add obstacle avoidance and movement towards a goal by using a navigation function - a scalar potential field with exactly one local minimum at the goal. To bound the inter-agent distances and thus avoid flock dispersion, any agent on the boundary of the flock uses a mirroring mechanism to create virtual neighbors that drive it inwards. We can prove collision safety and bounded group dispersion, and simulations show reliable goal convergence even in the presence of non-convex obstacles. A version of the algorithm with lower computational complexity is also presented. It can be used for formation control and it is proven to be locally asymptotically stable for a particular case. A hierarchical control structure is proposed for implementing the flocking on non-holonomic vehicles. It has been tested on a realistic car-like robot model in a flight dynamics simulator and the results confirm that the results on safety, group dispersion and goal convergence apply also in this case.

  • Experimental access to Transition Distribution Amplitudes with the PANDA experiment at FAIR
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. Hadrons and Nuclei. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 51:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion (pi N) TDAs from (p) over barp -> e(+)e(-)pi(0) reaction with the future PANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center-of-mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair q(2), the amplitude of the signal channel (p) over barp -> e(+)e(-)pi(0) admits a QCD factorized description in terms of pi N TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward aid backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring (p) over barp -> e(+)e(-)pi(0) with the PANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. (p) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) were performed for the center-of-mass energy squared s = 5 GeV2 and s = 10 GeV2, in the kinematic regions 3.0 < q(2) < 4.3 GeV2 and 5 < q(2) < 9 GeV2, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone vertical bar cos theta(pi 0)vertical bar > 0.5 in the proton-antiproton center-of-mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the PANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of 5 . 10(7) (1 . 10(7)) at low (high) q(2) for s = 5 GeV2, and of 1 . 10(8) (6 . 10(6)) at low (high) q(2) for s = 10 GeV2, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around 40%. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to 2 of integrated luminosity. The cross sections obtained from the simulations are used to show that a test of QCD collinear factorization can be done at the lowest order by measuring scaling laws and angular distributions. The future measurement of the signal channel cross section with PANDA will provide a new test of the perturbative QCD description of a novel class of hard exclusive reactions and will open the possibility of experimentally accessing pi N TDAs.

  • A Predictive Real Time NOx Model for Conventional and Partially Premixed Diesel Combustion
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: SAE, Session: Diesel Engine Modeling. - 400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA, United States : SAE International. ; 115
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A previously presented robust and fast diagnostic NOx model was modified into a predictive model. This was done by using simple yet physically-based models for fuel injection, ignition delay, premixed heat release rate and diffusion combustion heat release rate. The model can be used both for traditional high temperature combustion and for high-EGR low temperature combustion. It was possible to maintain a high accuracy and calculation speed of the NOx model itself. The root mean square of the relative model error is 16 % and the calculation speed is around one second on a PC. Combustion characteristics such as ignition delay, CA50 and the general shape of the heat release rate are well predicted by the combustion model. The model is aimed at real time NOx calculation and optimization in a vehicle on the road.

  • A Real Time NOx Model for Conventional and Partially Premixed Diesel Combustion
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: SAE, Session: Compression Ignition Combustion Processes (Part 3 of 3). - 400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA, United States : SAE International.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a fast NOx model is presented which can be used for engine optimization, aftertreatment control or virtual mapping. A cylinder pressure trace is required as input data. High calculation speed is obtained by using table interpolation to calculate equilibrium temperatures and species concentrations. Test data from a single-cylinder engine and from a complete six-cylinder engine have been used for calibration and validation of the model. The model produces results of good agreement with emission measurements using approximately 50 combustion product zones and a calculation time of one second per engine cycle. Different compression ratios, EGR rates, injection timing, inlet pressures etc. were used in the validation tests. The model calculates thermal (high-temperature) NOx formation by the two reactions of the original Zeldovich mechanism but by using a simple empirical compensation algorithm, the model can also be used for low-temperature NOx formation associated with high EGR rates and long ignition delay.
