  • Authenticity work in higher education learning environments: a double-edged sword?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Higher Education. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0018-1560 .- 1573-174X. ; 84, s. 67-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Educational authenticity occupies a strong position in higher education research and reform, building on the assumption that correspondence between higher education learning environments and professional settings is a driver of student engagement and transfer of knowledge beyond academia. In this paper, we draw attention to an overlooked aspect of authenticity, namely the rhetorical work teachers engage in to establish their learning environments as authentic and pedagogically appropriate. We use the term “authenticity work” to denote such rhetorical work. Drawing on ethnography and critical discourse analysis, we describe how two teachers engaged in authenticity work through renegotiating professional and educational discourse in their project-based engineering course. This ideological project was facilitated by three discursive strategies: (1) deficitization of students and academia, (2) naturalization of industry practices, and (3) polarization of the state of affairs in academia and in industry. Our findings suggest that authenticity work is a double-edged sword: While authenticity work may serve to bolster the legitimacy that is ascribed to learning environments, it may also close down opportunities for students to develop critical thinking about their profession and their education. Based on these findings, we discuss implications for teaching and propose a nascent research agenda for authenticity work in higher education learning environments.

  • The use of video in dental education: Clinical reality addressed as practical matters of production, interpretation and instruction
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Studies of video practices : video at work / edited by Mathias Broth, Eric Laurier and Lorenza Mondada. - New York : Routledge. - 9780415728393 ; , s. 161-180
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the past half-century, clinical practitioners, educators and researchers have argued for the benefits of using video and television in dental education. Everything within the tooth is tiny and it is hard to provide light in the inner structures of the teeth. This does not only pose challenges to the practising dentist, but also to the student of dentistry. This chapter investigates how a combination of video and microscopes is used for instructional purposes. In the first part, the production of the instructional video is analysed. The second part investigates how the video is interpreted and explicated by the teacher.

  • The End-of-Waste for the Transition to Circular Economy: A Legal Review of the European Union Waste Framework Directive
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Environmental Policy and Law. - : IOS Press. - 0378-777X .- 1878-5395. ; 53:2-3, s. 167-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The generation of waste is certain and unavoidable. Waste will always exist in some form. It is, however, possible to minimize waste generation and thereby improve virgin resource utilization. Within the European Union, the concept of End of Waste is a legal instrument adopted to facilitate the transition from waste to product, thus by extension facilitate the conditions for a circular economy. In this paper, the implications of the legal definition transforming waste to product, End of Waste, is discussed against the backdrop of waste as a potential resource. Through legal analysis, three primary issues regarding the current formulation of article 6(1) of the Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/EC) are highlighted: (1) the cumulative conditions stated in article 6(1) creating (unnecessary) bottlenecks; (2) the fact that the conditions for End of Waste originally were intended to be operationalized through legislative acts, such as the regulation for iron scrap or glass cullet; and (3) the fact that there is no clear indication of what level of proof the conditions stated in article 6(1) requires and the ambiguity of its application this implies in general. The fact that there must be a specified use as well as a market for a 'waste' to transform into something else implies that the underlying idea of the incorporation of End of Waste loses some of its meaning.

  • Seeing through the dentist's eyes: Video-based clinical demonstrations in preclinical dental training
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Dental Education. - 1930-7837. ; 77:12, s. 1629-1638
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The clinical demonstration is an established way of bridging the disciplinary content in preclinical and clinical courses. In dentistry, however, clinical demonstrations have often been perceived as less rewarding due to the restricted visual access to the details of the treatment. This study investigated a course in endodontics at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, in which traditional clinical demonstrations were replaced by instructor-led seminars that enabled students to follow and discuss broadcasted root canal treatments. Two cameras provided overviews of the operating room, whereas a third camera attached to a surgical microscope offered a magnified view of procedures carried out in the inner parts of teeth. The hypothesis was that this arrangement would increase the students’ sense of the clinical relevance of basic scientific knowledge. Two focus group interviews were designed to explore the students’ perceptions of this change. The students expressed that the video-based seminars offered ample opportunities to integrate theoretical and clinical understanding. The major reasons were that the visualization displayed procedures on a sufficiently detailed level; instructors demonstrated clinical reasoning in situ and provided the context necessary for understanding procedures; and the interactive format encouraged discussions on the generalizability of knowledge beyond the specific case.

  • Changes in lifestyle among prostate cancer survivors: A nationwide population-based study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Psycho-Oncology. - : Wiley. - 1057-9249 .- 1099-1611. ; 29:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective Long-term information on lifestyle changes among prostate survivors is lacking. In this nationwide, population-based study we investigated the prevalence of lifestyle changes, factors associated with lifestyle changes and associations between lifestyle changes and general quality of life. Methods All men registered in the National Prostate Cancer Register of Sweden diagnosed in 2008 with low-risk prostate cancer at age 70 years or younger were sent a questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals for factors potentially associated with lifestyle change. Results Out of 1288, 1720 men (75%) were responded. A total of 279 (22%) reported a positive lifestyle change regarding diet or exercise. Poor functional outcomes after treatment was associated with exercising less (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.2-2.1) and less interest in social activities and relationships (OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.5-2.1). Men who exercised more (OR 7.9, 95% CI 4.4-14) and men who had an increased interest in relationships and social activities (OR 5.2, 95% CI 2.1-13) reported higher general quality of life. Conclusions A considerable proportion of men reported making positive lifestyle changes after the prostate cancer diagnosis. The time after diagnosis may be a teachable moment that facilitates lifestyle interventions. Poor functional outcomes after treatment may reduce the willingness to engage in positive lifestyle change, which need be considered when supporting men after treatment. Men who made a positive lifestyle change, regardless of whether it was exercise or regarding relationships and social activities more often reported a high level of general quality of life.
