  • Development of a Smartphone App for a Genetics Website : The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Online Genetics Database (ALSoD)
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: JMIR mhealth and uhealth. - : JMIR Publications, Inc.. - 2291-5222. ; 1:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The ALS Online Genetics Database (ALSoD) website holds mutation, geographical, and phenotype data on genes implicated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and links to bioinformatics resources, publications, and tools for analysis. On average, there are 300 unique visits per day, suggesting a high demand from the research community. To enable wider access, we developed a mobile-friendly version of the website and a smartphone app. Objective: We sought to compare data traffic before and after implementation of a mobile version of the website to assess utility. Methods: We identified the most frequently viewed pages using Google Analytics and our in-house analytic monitoring. For these, we optimized the content layout of the screen, reduced image sizes, and summarized available information. We used the Microsoft. NET framework mobile detection property (HttpRequest. IsMobileDevice in the Request. Browser object in conjunction with HttpRequest. UserAgent), which returns a true value if the browser is a recognized mobile device. For app development, we used the Eclipse integrated development environment with Android plug-ins. We wrapped the mobile website version with the WebView object in Android. Simulators were downloaded to test and debug the applications. Results: The website automatically detects access from a mobile phone and redirects pages to fit the smaller screen. Because the amount of data stored on ALSoD is very large, the available information for display using smartphone access is deliberately restricted to improve usability. Visits to the website increased from 2231 to 2820, yielding a 26% increase from the pre-mobile to post-mobile period and an increase from 103 to 340 visits (230%) using mobile devices (including tablets). The smartphone app is currently available on BlackBerry and Android devices and will be available shortly on iOS as well. Conclusions: Further development of the ALSoD website has allowed access through smartphones and tablets, either through the website or directly through a mobile app, making genetic data stored on the database readily accessible to researchers and patients across multiple devices.

  • Acoustic trapping in the undergraduate laboratory
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Physics. - : American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). - 0002-9505 .- 1943-2909. ; 92:1, s. 59-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Acoustic trapping is used in modern biophysics laboratories to study cell adhesion or aggregation, to sort particles, or to build model tissues. Here, we create an acoustic trapping setup in liquid for an undergraduate instructional laboratory that is low-cost, easy to build, and produces results in a 1-hour laboratory period. In this setup, we use a glass slide, cover slip, and double-sided tape to make the sample chamber. A piezo-electric transducer connected to a function generator serves as the acoustic source. We use this setup to measure the node spacing (millimeters) and the acoustic trap force (picoNewtons). We anticipate that the simplicity of the experimental setup, the tractability of the theoretical equations, and the richness of the research topics on the subject will lead to an undergraduate laboratory with many interesting student projects.

  • The messy death of a multiple star system and the resulting planetary nebula as observed by JWST
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Astronomy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2397-3366. ; 6:12, s. 1421-1432
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Planetary nebulae—the ejected envelopes of red giant stars—provide us with a history of the last, mass-losing phases of 90% of stars initially more massive than the Sun. Here we analyse images of the planetary nebula NGC 3132 from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observations. A structured, extended hydrogen halo surrounding an ionized central bubble is imprinted with spiral structures, probably shaped by a low-mass companion orbiting the central star at about 40–60 au. The images also reveal a mid-infrared excess at the central star, interpreted as a dusty disk, which is indicative of an interaction with another closer companion. Including the previously known A-type visual companion, the progenitor of the NGC 3132 planetary nebula must have been at least a stellar quartet. The JWST images allow us to generate a model of the illumination, ionization and hydrodynamics of the molecular halo, demonstrating the power of JWST to investigate complex stellar outflows. Furthermore, new measurements of the A-type visual companion allow us to derive the value for the mass of the progenitor of a central star with excellent precision: 2.86 ± 0.06 M⊙. These results serve as pathfinders for future JWST observations of planetary nebulae, providing unique insight into fundamental astrophysical processes including colliding winds and binary star interactions, with implications for supernovae and gravitational-wave systems.

  • New Trends in HCI and Sports
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: MobileHCI 2022 Adjunct - Publication of the 24th ACM International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction with Mobile Devices and Services. - New York, NY, USA : ACM.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last 15 years, we have witnessed a digitalization of the sports experience, i.e., many sports have been enhanced by digital and wearable devices. The centrality of the human body and the different contexts where sports can be practiced have led HCI research to explore how mobile and wearable devices could support the physical, social, and environmental aspects of sports disciplines. Yet, the field of HCI & sports continues to evolve under the push of new technological developments and events affecting people worldwide, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change. Technological advancements like the metaverse, inbodied technologies, and AI have paved the way for augmented humans, esports, new forms of sociality, and new ways to engage the audience. Likewise, contextual factors push sports trends in two opposite directions simultaneously: on the one hand, they foster the indoorisation and individualization of sports; on the other hand, they encourage practicing sports outdoors and taking advantage of the "restorative environment"of nature. With this workshop, we would like to invite the MobileHCI community to discuss the current trends in portable technologies for sports and trace future directions for HCI research in this field.

  • Preface to the Proceedings of the Workshop “New Trends in HCI and Sports” held at MobileHCI ‘22
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: CEUR Workshop Proceedings. - 1613-0073. ; 3267
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The contemporary digitalization of the sports experience brought new challenges for the HCI community. HCI researchers started exploring how mobile and wearable devices could support the physical, social, and environmental aspects of sports, while technological transformations like the metaverse, inbodied technologies, and AI have recently paved the way for augmented humans, esports, new forms of sociality, and new ways to engage the sports audience. In this preface, we present the papers accepted to the workshop Net Trends in HCI and Sports, held in conjunction with MobileHCI ‘22, which precisely attempted to deal with the recent advancements in technology used in the sports domain.
