    • The resonance lines in Li I and Na I both exhibit a puzzling discrepancy between experiment and accurate ab initio calculations. Only results from a semiempirical method, that in principal neglects core-core correlation, agree with the experiments. The agreement with a multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock calculation, including only core-valence correlation, shows that this might be fortuitous. A method for including some core-core correlation is designed and gives results in excellent agreement with other accurate ab initio methods.

    • The J = 0 --> J' = 0 radiative transitions, usually viewed as allowed through two-photon decay, may also be induced by the hyperfine (HPF) interaction in atoms or ions having a nonzero nuclear spin. We compute new and review existing decay rates for the nsnp P-3(J)0 --> nS(2 1)S(J'= 0) transitions in ions of the Be (n = 2) and Mg (n = 3) isoelectronic sequences. The HPF induced decay rates for the J = 0 --> J' = 0 transitions are many orders of magnitude larger than those for the competing two-photon processes, and when present are typically 1 or 2 orders of magnitude smaller than the decay rates of the magnetic quadrupole (J = 2 --> J' = 0) transitions for these ions. Several HPF induced transitions are potentially of astrophysical interest in ions of C, N, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Cr, Fe, and Ni. We highlight those cases that may be of particular diagnostic value for determining isotopic abundance ratios and/or electron densities from UV or EUV emission-line data. We present our atomic data in the form of scaling laws so that, given the isotopic nuclear spin and magnetic moment, a simple expression yields estimates for HPF induced decay rates. We examine some UV and EUV solar and nebular data in light of these new results and suggest possible applications for future study. We could not find evidence for the existence of HPF induced lines in the spectra we examined, but we demonstrate that existing data have come close to providing interesting upper limits. For the planetary nebula SMC N2, we derive an upper limit of 0.1 for C-13/C-12 from Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph data obtained by Clegg. It is likely that more stringent limits could be obtained using newer data with higher sensitivities in a variety of objects.

    • We report on large-scale ab initio multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations for spectral lines of Si IX, with emphasis on the forbidden transitions 2p(2) P-3(J-->J'). The J = 0 --> J' = 1 transition at 3.9346 mu m holds promise as a diagnostic of coronal magnetic fields if and when future coronagraphic instruments can measure the polarized light at this wavelength.

Results for wavelengths, fine structure, transition rates, branching ratios and lifetimes are reported and compared with other theories and experiments. A review of the experimental situation is presented, and deviations from expected smooth trends along the sequence are discussed.

    • We have investigated the effect of an external magnetic field on the angular distribution and the linear polarization of the 2p(2)2p(5)3s(3)P(2)(o) -> 2s(2)2p(6) S-1(0) emission line in Ne- like ions. Since an electric dipole decay channel is opened by the magnetic field and competes with the inherent magnetic quadrupole transition, these properties strongly depend on the magnetic field strength, B. As an example, we discuss in some detail this transition in neonlike magnesium. This is of special interest, since the B-dependent angular distributions and linear polarization degrees are potentially unique diagnostic tools for the magnetic field in different plasmas.

    • We report theoretical results for magnetic-field-induced 2p(5)3s 3P(0,2)-2p(6) S-1(0) E1 transitions in Ne-like ions with zero nuclear spin (I = 0) between Mg III and Zn XXI as well as in Ne I. We demonstrate that it is important to include both "perturber" states 2p(5)3s P-1(1) and 2p(5)3s P-3(1) in order to produce reliable transition rates. Furthermore, we investigate the trends of the rates along the isoelectronic sequence of the 2p(5)3s 3P(0,2)-2p(6) S-1(0) transitions and their competition with the 2p(5)3s P-3(0)-2p(5)3s P-3(1) M1 and the 2p(5)3s P-3(2)-2p(6) S-1(0) M2 decays. For the 2p(5)3s P-3(0) state the magnetic-field-induced transition becomes the dominant decay channel for the light elements even in a relatively weak magnetic field, and it will therefore prove useful in diagnostics of the strength of magnetic fields in different plasmas. The influence of an external magnetic field on the lifetime of the 2p(5)3s P-3(2) state is much smaller but still observable for the ions near the neutral end of the sequence. As a special case, the magnetic field effect on the lifetimes of 2p(5)3s P-3(0,2) states of neutral Ne-20 is discussed. It is found that the lifetimes are drastically reduced by a magnetic field, which may be an underlying reason for the discrepancies in the lifetime of the 2p(5)3s P-3(2) state between experiment [14.73(14) s] and theory (17.63 s).

  • A Novel Method to Determine Magnetic Fields in Low-density Plasma Facilitated Through Accidental Degeneracy of Quantum States in Fe9

    • We propose a new method to determine magnetic fields, by using the magnetic-field-induced electric dipole transition 3p(4) 3d D-4(7/2) -> 3p(5) P-3/2 in Fe9+ ions. This ion has a high abundance in astrophysical plasma and is therefore well suited for direct measurements of even rather weak fields in, e.g., solar flares. This transition is induced by an external magnetic field and its rate is proportional to the square of the magnetic field strength. We present theoretical values for what we will label the reduced rate and propose that the critical energy difference between the upper level in this transition and the close-to-degenerate 3p(4) 3d D-4(5/2) should be measured experimentally since it is required to determine the relative intensity of this magnetic line for different magnetic fields.
