A high blood level in the venous chamber and a wet-stored dialyzer help to reduce exposure for microemboli during hemodialysis

- During hemodialysis (HD), microemboli develop in the blood circuit of the apparatus. These microemboli can pass through the venous chamber and enter into the patient's circulation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether it is possible to reduce the risk for exposure of microemboli by altering of the treatment mode. Twenty patients on chronic HD were randomized to a prospective cross-over study of three modes of HD: (a) a dry-stored dialyzer (F8HPS, Fresenius, steam sterilized) with a low blood level in the venous chamber (DL), (b) the same dialyzer as above, but with a high level in the venous chamber (DH), and (c) a wet-stored dialyzer (Rexeed, Asahi Kasei Medical, gamma sterilized) with a high blood level (WH). Microemboli measurements were obtained in a continuous fashion during 180 minutes of HD for all settings. A greater number of microemboli were detected during dialysis with the setting DL vs. WH (odds ratio [OR] 4.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] 4.03-4.11, P<0.0001) and DH vs. WH (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.17-1.19, P<0.0001) and less for DH vs. DL (OR 0.290, 95% CI 0.288-0.2930.288-0.293, P<0.0001). These data indicate that emboli exposure was least when using WH, greater with DH, and most with DL. - Using e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)(gamma) and e(+)e(-) -> q (q) over bar(gamma) events radiative to the Z pole, DELPHI has determined the centre-of-mass energy, root s, using energy and momentum constraint methods. The results are expressed as deviations from the nominal LEP centre-of-mass energy, measured using other techniques. The results are found to be compatible with the LEP Energy Working Group estimates for a combination of the 1997 to 2000 data sets.

- Final results from the DELPHI Collaboration on the lifetime of B+ and B-0 mesons and the mean b-hadron lifetime, are presented using the data collected at the Z(0) peak in 1994 and 1995. Elaborate, inclusive, secondary vertexing methods have been employed to ensure a b-hadron reconstruction with good efficiency. To separate samples of B+ and B-0 mesons, high performance neural network techniques are used that achieve very high purity signals. The results obtained are: tau(B+) = 1.624+/-0.014 (stat)+/-0.018 (syst) ps tau(B)0 = 1.531+/-0.021 (stat)+/-0.031 (syst) ps tau(B+)/tau(B)0 = 1.060+/-0.021 (stat)+/-0.024 (syst) and for the average b-hadron lifetime: taub/tau(B)0 = 1.570+/-0.005 (stat)+/-0.008 (syst) ps.

- The tau lepton lifetime has been measured with the e(+) e(-) --> tau(+) tau(-) events collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in the years 1991 - 1995. Three different methods have been exploited, using both one-prong and three-prong tau decay channels. Two measurements have been made using events in which both taus decay to a single charged particle. Combining these measurements gave tau(tau) ( 1 prong) = 291.8 +/- 2.3(stat) +/- 1.5(sys) fs. A third measurement using taus which decayed to three charged particles yielded tau(tau) (3 prong) = 288.6 +/- 2.4(stat) +/- 1.3(sys) fs. These were combined with previous DELPHI results to measure the tau lifetime, using the full LEP1 data sample, to be tau(tau) = 290.9 +/- 1.4(stat) +/- 1.0(sys) fs.

- Measurements are presented of R-b, the ratio of the b (b) over bar cross-section to the q (q) over bar cross-section in e(+)e(-) collisions, and the forward-backward asymmetry A(FB)(b) at twelve energy points in the range root s = 130-207 GeV. These results are found to be consistent with the Standard Model expectations. The measurements are used to set limits on new physics scenarios involving contact interactions.
