  • Global negative vegetation feedback to climate warming responses of leaf litter decomposition rates in cold biomes
  • 2007
  • In: Ecology Letters. - : Wiley. - 1461-023X .- 1461-0248. ; 10:7, s. 619-627
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Whether climate change will turn cold biomes from large long-term carbon sinks into sources is hotly debated because of the great potential for ecosystem-mediated feedbacks to global climate. Critical are the direction, magnitude and generality of climate responses of plant litter decomposition. Here, we present the first quantitative analysis of the major climate-change-related drivers of litter decomposition rates in cold northern biomes worldwide.Leaf litters collected from the predominant species in 33 global change manipulation experiments in circum-arctic-alpine ecosystems were incubated simultaneously in two contrasting arctic life zones. We demonstrate that longer-term, large-scale changes to leaf litter decomposition will be driven primarily by both direct warming effects and concomitant shifts in plant growth form composition, with a much smaller role for changes in litter quality within species. Specifically, the ongoing warming-induced expansion of shrubs with recalcitrant leaf litter across cold biomes would constitute a negative feedback to global warming. Depending on the strength of other (previously reported) positive feedbacks of shrub expansion on soil carbon turnover, this may partly counteract direct warming enhancement of litter decomposition.

  • Modelo de Referencia de Redes de Valor para un desarrollo sostenible [Reference Model of the Value Networks for a sustainable development]
  • 2010
  • In: Revista de Investigación Agraria y Ambiental. - : Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia. - 2145-6453 .- 2145-6097. ; 1:2, s. 29-49
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Case studies and modeling of logistics systems are the basis for the formulation of the content and structure of a reference model for the organization and management of Value Networks as a higher stage of integrated development of supply chains. The definition of a mathematical model for the balance of the Value Network can reveal the characteristics and principles of organization and management of Value Networks. The instrument obtained enables supply chains to assess their level of development and identify the characteristics that should be developed to reach the concept of Value Network, which is based on knowledge development and environmental integration as supports of the same and its competitive position in the global market.Proper integration into the model of environmental factors ensures that Value Networks are inserted into the objectives of promoting sustainable development. The current concept of logistics flow is extended to incorporate within it the exchange of energy, resources and impacts to the environment. The research methods used were based on a combination of study and experimentation of cases and the conceptual and mathematical modeling of systems.

  • Visual search strategies during facial recognition in children with ASD
  • 2014
  • In: Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders. - : Elsevier BV. - 1750-9467 .- 1878-0237. ; 8:5, s. 559-569
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Facial recognition is a complex skill necessary for successful human interpersonal and social interactions. Given that the most prevalent disorder of social interaction is autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a number of studies have investigated and found impaired facial recognition abilities in people with ASD. Further, this impairment may be critically involved in mediating the deficits in interpersonal and social interactions in people with ASD. We sought to address the question of whether face processing is impaired in children with ASD in the current study. While there were a number of differences in visual search behaviours between the 19 children with ASD and the 15 controls, this did not manifest in deficits in facial recognition accuracy. In addition, there were notable differences with respect to eye fixation behaviours and recognition accuracy in this study compared to the findings in a previous similar study conducted in adults with ASD. These differences suggest a performance enhancing developmental trajectory in facial processing in controls that may not be present in individuals with ASD.

  • Explanation and elaboration of the SQUIRE (Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence) Guidelines, V.2.0 : Examples of SQUIRE elements in the healthcare improvement literature
  • 2016
  • In: BMJ Quality and Safety. - : BMJ. - 2044-5415 .- 2044-5423. ; 25:12
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Since its publication in 2008, SQUIRE (Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence) has contributed to the completeness and transparency of reporting of quality improvement work, providing guidance to authors and reviewers of reports on healthcare improvement work. In the interim, enormous growth has occurred in understanding factors that influence the success, and failure, of healthcare improvement efforts. Progress has been particularly strong in three areas: the understanding of the theoretical basis for improvement work; the impact of contextual factors on outcomes; and the development of methodologies for studying improvement work. Consequently, there is now a need to revise the original publication guidelines. To reflect the breadth of knowledge and experience in the field, we solicited input from a wide variety of authors, editors and improvement professionals during the guideline revision process. This Explanation and Elaboration document (E&E) is a companion to the revised SQUIRE guidelines, SQUIRE 2.0. The product of collaboration by an international and interprofessional group of authors, this document provides examples from the published literature, and an explanation of how each reflects the intent of a specific item in SQUIRE. The purpose of the guidelines is to assist authors in writing clearly, precisely and completely about systematic efforts to improve the quality, safety and value of healthcare services. Authors can explore the SQUIRE statement, this E&E and related documents in detail at http://www.squire-statement.org.

  • Mathematical model for the integrated calculation of production, logistical and service capacities in the value chain
  • 2013
  • In: Wissenschaftliche Beiträge. ; , s. 91-96
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The development of supply chain management includes the capacities coordination among the processes that integrate it, so much in the operative plan as in the strategic one. This problem could be allocated to the classic job shop scheduling problems of the Operations Research. In such direction, a second generalization of the calculation algorithm of the production, logistics and service capacities is formulated starting from the one reached previously by the own authors. With this generalization it is facilitated to carry out the calculations of capacity at the supply chain level and of each one of the processes. The generality's application is flexible to processes of production, transport, storage, administration and for service. The capacities of each process of the supply chain are expressed in the magnitudes of the final demand of products and services in the consumer, considering the losses and returns along the supply chain. A study case is presented to demonstrate the possibility of use in one field, but it is explained the possibility to use in different fields, from the production of aluminum carpentry to services related to medical equipments.

  • Complementary and alternative medicine use in patients with haematological malignancies in Europe
  • 2005
  • In: Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice. - : Elsevier. - 1744-3881 .- 1873-6947. ; 11:2, s. 105-110
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study reports upon a descriptive cross-sectional survey assessing the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in patients with haematological cancers. Twelve European countries contributed data from patients with haematological cancers, as part of a larger study. Sixty-eight patients with haematological cancer participated. Among the participants, 26.5% used some form of CAM after the cancer diagnosis. The most common therapies used were homeopathy (38.9%), herbal medicine (22.2%) various psychic therapies, such as use of mediums, healers, rebirthing or past life regression therapy (22.2%). A particular profile of a CAM user was not evident in the sample. Moderate levels of satisfaction with CAM were reported. Patients commonly used CAM to increase the ability of their body to fight cancer and to improve physical and emotional well-being. Information about CAM was received mainly from friends or family. As CAM use in patients with haematological malignancies is common, clinicians should assist patients who want to use CAM to make an appropriate decision, and improve communication with them about CAM use in an open and non-judgemental dialogue. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. • Agil och rekonfigurerbar produktion : projektmetod och utformning av produktionssystem
  • 2020
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
