  • Cellulose-derived carbon nanofibers/graphene composite electrodes for powerful compact supercapacitors
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: RSC Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2046-2069. ; 7:73, s. 45968-45977
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Herein, we demonstrate a unique supercapacitor composite electrode material that is originated from a sustainable cellulosic precursor via simultaneous one-step carbonization/reduction of cellulose/graphene oxide mats at 800 degrees C. The resulting freestanding material consists of mechanically stable carbon nanofibrous (CNF, fiber diameter 50-500 nm) scaffolds tightly intertwined with highly conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) sheets with a thickness of 1-3 nm. The material is mesoporous and has electrical conductivity of 49 S cm(-1), attributed to the well-interconnected graphene layers. The electrochemical evaluation of the CNF/graphene composite electrodes in a supercapacitor device shows very promising volumetric values of capacitance, energy and power density (up to 46 F cm(-3), 1.46 W h L-1 and 1.09 kW L-1, respectively). Moreover, the composite electrodes retain an impressive 97% of the initial capacitance over 4000 cycles. With these superior properties, the produced composite electrodes should be the "looked-for" components in compact supercapacitors used for increasingly popular portable electronics and hybrid vehicles.

  • Towards benchmarking of functional safety in the automotive industry
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computr Science. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 9783642387883 ; , s. 111-125
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Functional safety is becoming increasingly important in the automotive industry to deal with the growing reliance on the electrical and/or electronic (E/E) systems and the associated complexities. The introduction of ISO 26262, a new standard for functional safety in road vehicles, has made it even more important to adopt a systematic approach of evaluating functional safety. However, standard assessment methods of benchmarking functional safety of automotive systems are not available as of today. This is where the BeSafe (Benchmarking of Functional Safety) project comes into the picture. BeSafe project aims to lay the foundation for benchmarking functional safety of automotive E/E systems. In this paper, we present a brief overview of the project along with the benchmark targets that we have identified as relevant for the automotive industry, assuming three abstraction layers (model, software, hardware). We then define and discuss a set of benchmark measures. Next, we propose a benchmark framework encompassing fault/error models, methods and the required tool support. This paper primarily focuses on functional safety benchmarking from the Safety Element out of Context (SEooC) viewpoint. Finally, we present some preliminary results and highlight potential future works.

  • 3000 Years of past regional and local land-use and land-cover change in the southeastern Swedish coastal area : Early human-induced increases in landscape openness as a potential nutrient source to the Baltic Sea coastal waters
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The Holocene. - : Sage Publications. - 0959-6836 .- 1477-0911. ; 34:1, s. 56-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reconstructions of past land use and related land-cover changes at local and regional scales are needed to evaluate the potential long-term impacts of land use on the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea. In this purpose, we selected the Gamleby area at the Swedish Baltic Sea coast for a case study. We use a new, high resolution pollen record from a small lake (Lillsjön) located 3.6 km NNW of the bay Gamlebyviken and detailed analysis of the available archeological data to reconstruct local land-use changes over the last 3000 years. To estimate land-cover change at local (2–3 km radius area) and regional (50 km radius area) scales we use four additional, published pollen records from two small and two large lakes (25–70 km S of Lillsjön) and the Landscape Reconstruction Algorithm, a pollen-vegetation modeling scheme. Results show that regional and local (small lakes Lillsjön and Hyttegöl) land-cover changes are comparable over the last 1500 years (Late Iron Age to present), and that landscape openness was much larger locally than regionally (difference of 20–40% cover over the last 500 years). The periods of largest potential impacts on the Gamlebyviken Bay from regional and local land use are 200–950 CE (Late Iron Age) and 1450 CE to present, and of lowest potential impacts 950–1450 CE. The question on whether the large landscape openness 1150–50 BCE and significant afforestation 50 BCE–200 CE reconstructed for Lillsjön’s area are characteristic of the Gamlebyviken region will require additional pollen records in the catchment area.

  • Antimicrobial performance of mesoporous titania thin films: role of pore size, hydrophobicity, and antibiotic release
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International journal of nanomedicine. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1176-9114 .- 1178-2013. ; 11, s. 977-990
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Implant-associated infections are undesirable complications that might arise after implant surgery. If the infection is not prevented, it can lead to tremendous cost, trauma, and even life threatening conditions for the patient. Development of an implant coating loaded with antimicrobial substances would be an effective way to improve the success rate of implants. In this study, the in vitro efficacy of mesoporous titania thin films used as a novel antimicrobial release coating was evaluated. Mesoporous titania thin films with pore diameters of 4, 6, and 7 nm were synthesized using the evaporation-induced self-assembly method. The films were characterized and loaded with antimicrobial agents, including vancomycin, gentamicin, and daptomycin. Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used to evaluate their effectiveness toward inhibiting bacterial colonization. Drug loading and delivery were studied using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, which showed successful loading and release of the antibiotics from the surfaces. Results from counting bacterial colony-forming units showed reduced bacterial adhesion on the drug-loaded films. Interestingly, the presence of the pores alone had a desired effect on bacterial colonization, which can be attributed to the documented nanotopographical effect. In summary, this study provides significant promise for the use of mesoporous titania thin films for reducing implant infections.

  • A study of the impact of single bit-flip and double bit-flip errors on program execution
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Lect. Notes Comput. Sci.. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 9783642407925 ; 8153 LNCS
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental study of bit-flip errors in instruction set architecture registers and main memory locations. Comprising more than two million fault injection experiments conducted with thirteen benchmark programs, the study provides insights on whether it is necessary to consider double bit-flip errors in dependability benchmarking experiments. The results show that the proportion of silent data corruptions in the program output, is almost the same for single and double bit errors. In addition, we present detailed statistics about the error sensitivity of different target registers and memory locations, including bit positions within registers and memory words. These show that the error sensitivity varies significantly between different bit positions and registers. An important observation is that injections in certain bit positions always have the same impact regardless of when the error is injected.

  • Sources of Variation in Error Sensitivity Measurements, Significant or Not?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 48th Annual IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks Workshops, DSN-W 2018. - 9781538665534 ; , s. 71-72
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measuring the error sensitivity by fault injection is an important method for assessing the dependability of computer systems. In this paper, we define error sensitivity as the conditional probability that a hardware-related error causes a silent data corruption. When measuring the error sensitivity it is important to consider how the experimental setup and the workload characteristics affect the estimated error sensitivity. We consider five such potential sources of variation (PSVs) in this paper. Three of these are related to the workload: i) input profile, ii) source code implementation, and, iii) use of compiler optimization. Two are related to the experimental setup: i) single vs. double bit-flips, and ii) inject-on-read vs. inject-on-write. The paper discusses the applicability of different statistical tests for assessing whether a PSV has a significant impact on error sensitivity.

  • Strategies to improve usability and preserve accuracy in biological sequence databases
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proteomics. - : Wiley. - 1615-9853 .- 1615-9861. ; 16:18, s. 2454-2460
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biology is increasingly dependent on large-scale analysis, such as proteomics, creating a requirement for efficient bioinformatics. Bioinformatic predictions of biological functions rely upon correctly annotated database sequences, and the presence of inaccurately annotated or otherwise poorly described sequences introduces noise and bias to biological analyses. Accurate annotations are, for example, pivotal for correct identifications of polypeptide fragments. However, standards for how sequence databases are organized and presented are currently insufficient. Here, we propose five strategies to address fundamental issues in the annotation of sequence databases: (i) to clearly separate experimentally verified and unverified sequence entries; (ii) to enable a system for tracing the origins of annotations; (iii) to separate entries with high-quality, informative annotation from less useful ones; (iv) to integrate automated quality-control software whenever such tools exist; and (v) to facilitate post-submission editing of annotations and metadata associated with sequences. We believe that implementation of these strategies, for example as requirements for publication of database papers, would enable biology to better take advantage of large-scale data.

  • Success of a low-sloping rack for improving downstream passage of silver eels at a hydroelectric plant
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Freshwater Biology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0046-5070 .- 1365-2427. ; 58, s. 2168-2179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a critically endangered species, and one major threat is thesurvival of silver eels migrating downstream towards the sea from lake and river rearing areas. Duringthis migration, many eels are impinged and die on intake racks, or are injured or killed whenpassing through turbines.2. Intake racks at a hydroelectric plant were modified to avoid impingement and to collect eels withoutinjury; high mortality on both racks and in turbines was previously documented. Modificationsconsisted of reducing the rack gap width from 20 to 18 mm, decreasing the rack slope from 63 to 35degrees, increasing the rack surface area by 58% and installing six openings in the rack leading totraps.3. Downstream passage conditions for silver eels at the hydroelectric plant were significantlyimproved, reducing mortality from >70% at the old steep 20 mm racks to <10% at the modified18 mm rack collection facility. No tagged eels were impinged and killed on the racks, and 80%entered the collection facility.4. Survival can probably be improved even more, as the individuals that passed the facility mostlikely escaped through holes in the traps. Moreover, injured untagged eels were still encountered atthe modified racks, illustrating the need for rehabilitative measures to be implemented at all obstaclesbetween the main eel rearing areas and the sea.

  • In vitro evaluation of human fetal osteoblast response to magnesium loaded mesoporous TiO2 coating.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biomedical Materials Research - Part A. - : Wiley. - 1552-4965 .- 1549-3296. ; 102:11, s. 3862-3871
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work aimed to evaluate the in vitro response of Transfected Human Foetal Osteoblast (hFOB) cultured on a magnesium-loaded mesoporous TiO2 coating. The application of mesoporous films on titanium implant surfaces has shown very promising potential to enhance osseointegration. This type of coating has the ability to act as a framework to sustain bioactive agents and different drugs. Magnesium is the element that, after calcium, is the most frequently used to dope titanium implant surfaces, since it is crucial for protein formation, growth factor expression, and aids for bone mineral deposition on implant surfaces. Mesoporous TiO2 films with an average pore-size of 6 nm were produced by the evaporation-induced self-assembly method (EISA) and deposited onto titanium discs. Magnesium loading was performed by soaking the mesoporous TiO2 discs in a magnesium chloride solution. Surface characterization was conducted by SEM, XPS, optical interferometry, and AFM. Magnesium release profile was assessed at different time points using a Magnesium Detection kit. Cell morphology and spreading were observed with SEM. The cytoskeletal organization was stained with TRITC-conjugated Phalloidin and cell viability was evaluated through a mitochondrial colorimetric (MTT) assay. Furthermore, gene expression of bone markers and cell mineralization were analyzed by real time RT-PCR and alizarin-red staining, respectively. The surface chemical analysis by XPS revealed the successful adsorption of magnesium to the mesoporous coating. The AFM measurements revealed the presence of a nanostructured surface roughness. Osteoblasts viability and adhesion as well as the gene expression were unaffected by the addition of magnesium possibly due to its rapid burst release, however, were enhanced by the 3D nanostructure of the TiO2 layer.

  • Osteogenic potential of human adipose-derived stromal cells on 3-dimensional mesoporous TiO2 coating with magnesium impregnation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Materials Science and Engineering C. - : Elsevier BV. - 0928-4931 .- 1873-0191. ; 52, s. 225-234
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to evaluate the osteogenic response of human adipose-derived stromal cells (ADScs) to mesoporous titania (TiO2) coatings produced with evaporation-induced self-assembly method (EISA) and loaded with magnesium. Our emphasis with the magnesium release functionality was to modulate progenitor cell osteogenic differentiation under standard culture conditions. Osteogenic properties of the coatings were assessed for stromal cells by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, colorimetric mitochondrial viability assay (MTT), colorimetric alkaline phosphates activity (ALP) assay and real time RT-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Using atomic force microscopy (AFM) it was shown that the surface expansion area (S-dr) was strongly enhanced by the presence of magnesium. From MTT results it was shown that ADSc viability was significantly increased on mesoporous surfaces compared to the non-porous one at a longer cell culture time. However, no differences were observed between the magnesium impregnated and non-impregnated surfaces. The alkaline phosphatase activity confirmed that ADSc started to differentiate into the osteogenic phenotype after 2 weeks of culturing. The gene expression profile at 2 weeks of cell growth showed that such coatings were capable to incorporate specific osteogenic markers inside their interconnected nano-pores and, at 3 weeks, ADSc differentiated into osteoblasts. Interestingly, magnesium significantly promoted the osteopontin gene expression, which is an essential gene for the early biomaterial-cell osteogenic interaction. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V.
