  • A control oriented strategy of disruption prediction to avoid the configuration collapse of tokamak reactors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 15:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of thermonuclear fusion consists of producing electricity from the coalescence of light nuclei in high temperature plasmas. The most promising route to fusion envisages the confinement of such plasmas with magnetic fields, whose most studied configuration is the tokamak. Disruptions are catastrophic collapses affecting all tokamak devices and one of the main potential showstoppers on the route to a commercial reactor. In this work we report how, deploying innovative analysis methods on thousands of JET experiments covering the isotopic compositions from hydrogen to full tritium and including the major D-T campaign, the nature of the various forms of collapse is investigated in all phases of the discharges. An original approach to proximity detection has been developed, which allows determining both the probability of and the time interval remaining before an incoming disruption, with adaptive, from scratch, real time compatible techniques. The results indicate that physics based prediction and control tools can be developed, to deploy realistic strategies of disruption avoidance and prevention, meeting the requirements of the next generation of devices.

  • Commercial thorium fuel manufacture and irradiation: Testing (Th,Pu)O-2 and (Th,U)O-2 in the "Seven-Thirty" program
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Annals of Nuclear Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-4549 .- 1873-2100. ; 75, s. 79-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thorium based fuels are being tested in the Halden Research Reactor in Norway with the aim of producing the data necessary for licensing of these fuels in today's light water reactors. The fuel types currently under irradiation are thorium oxide fuel with plutonium as the fissile component, and uranium fuel with thorium as an additive for enhancement of thermo-mechanical and neutronic fuel properties. Fuel temperatures, rod pressures and dimensional changes are monitored on-line for quantification of thermo-mechanical behavior and fission gas release. Preliminary irradiation results show benefits in terms of lower fuel temperatures, mainly caused by improved thermal conductivity of the thorium fuels. In parallel with the irradiation, a manufacturing procedure for thorium-plutonium mixed oxide fuel is developed with the aim to manufacture industrially relevant high-quality fuel pellets for the next phase of the irradiation campaign.

  • Inversion of Spin Signal and Spin Filtering in Ferromagnet vertical bar Hexagonal Boron Nitride-Graphene van der Waals Heterostructures
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two dimensional atomically thin crystals of graphene and its insulating isomorph hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) are promising materials for spintronic applications. While graphene is an ideal medium for long distance spin transport, h-BN is an insulating tunnel barrier that has potential for efficient spin polarized tunneling from ferromagnets. Here, we demonstrate the spin filtering effect in cobalt vertical bar few layer h-BN vertical bar graphene junctions leading to a large negative spin polarization in graphene at room temperature. Through nonlocal pure spin transport and Hanle precession measurements performed on devices with different interface barrier conditions, we associate the negative spin polarization with high resistance few layer h-BN vertical bar ferromagnet contacts. Detailed bias and gate dependent measurements reinforce the robustness of the effect in our devices. These spintronic effects in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures hold promise for future spin based logic and memory applications.

  • A Simultaneous Dual-site Technosignature Search Using International LOFAR Stations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - 1538-3881 .- 0004-6256. ; 166:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence aims to find evidence of technosignatures, which can point toward the possible existence of technologically advanced extraterrestrial life. Radio signals similar to those engineered on Earth may be transmitted by other civilizations, motivating technosignature searches across the entire radio spectrum. In this endeavor, the low-frequency radio band has remained largely unexplored; with prior radio searches primarily above 1 GHz. In this survey at 110-190 MHz, observations of 1,631,198 targets from TESS and Gaia are reported. Observations took place simultaneously with two international stations (noninterferometric) of the Low Frequency Array in Ireland and Sweden. We can reject the presence of any Doppler drifting narrowband transmissions in the barycentric frame of reference, with equivalent isotropic radiated power of 1017 W, for 0.4 million (or 1.3 million) stellar systems at 110 (or 190) MHz. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of using multisite simultaneous observations for rejecting anthropogenic signals in the search for technosignatures.

  • Gelation behaviour during chainwise crosslinking polymerisation of methacrylate resins
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Polymer. - 0032-3861 .- 1873-2291. ; 40, s. 5699-5707
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gelation process in chainwise crosslinking polymerisation of methacrylate resins with average functionalities of 2.1-50 (1.05-25 methacrylate groups/molecule) was investigated using dynamic mechanical analysis. For all systems a crossover in tan delta (tan delta independent of frequency) was observed at gelation. The gel time was found to decrease with increasing functionality of the system. Within the measured frequency ranges, power law behaviour for the dynamic modulus was observed at the gel point in all systems. A value of the power law exponent n of 0.4 +/- 0.2 to 0.6 +/- 0.1 (increasing with increasing functionality of the system) was determined for gelation during reactions at T greater than or equal to T-g infinity. This trend suggests that the differences in screening between the systems dominate over the difference in fractal dimension. For reaction temperatures below T-g infinity a value of n = 0.3 +/- 01 was obtained, which was attributed to the influence of micro-vitrification. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
