  • NeuLAND: The high-resolution neutron time-of-flight spectrometer for R 3 B at FAIR
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002. ; 1014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NeuLAND (New Large-Area Neutron Detector) is the next-generation neutron detector for the R3B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research). NeuLAND detects neutrons with energies from 100 to 1000 MeV, featuring a high detection efficiency, a high spatial and time resolution, and a large multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency. This is achieved by a highly granular design of organic scintillators: 3000 individual submodules with a size of 5 × 5 × 250 cm3 are arranged in 30 double planes with 100 submodules each, providing an active area of 250 × 250 cm2 and a total depth of 3 m. The spatial resolution due to the granularity together with a time resolution of σt≤ 150 ps ensures high-resolution capabilities. In conjunction with calorimetric properties, a multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency of 50% to 70% for four-neutron events will be achieved, depending on both the emission scenario and the boundary conditions allowed for the reconstruction method. We present in this paper the final design of the detector as well as results from test measurements and simulations on which this design is based.

  • Quantum information processing and communication - Strategic report on current status, visions and goals for research in Europe
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal D. Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6060 .- 1434-6079. ; 36:2, s. 203-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an excerpt of the document "Quantum Information Processing and Communication: Strategic report on current status, visions and goals for research in Europe", which has been recently published in electronic form at the website of FET (the Future and Emerging Technologies Unit of the Directorate General Information Society of the European Commission, http://www.cordis.lu/ist/fet/qipc-sr.htm). This document has been elaborated, following a former suggestion by FET, by a committee of QIPC scientists to provide input towards the European Commission for the preparation of the Seventh Framework Program. Besides being a document addressed to policy makers and funding agencies (both at the European and national level), the document contains a detailed scientific assessment of the state-of-the-art, main research goals, challenges, strengths, weaknesses, visions and perspectives of all the most relevant QIPC sub-fields, that we report here.

  • Identifying Bird Remains Using Ancient DNA Barcoding
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Genes. - : MDPI AG. - 2073-4425 .- 2073-4425. ; 8:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bird remains that are difficult to identify taxonomically using morphological methods, are common in the palaeontological record. Other types of challenging avian material include artefacts and food items from endangered taxa, as well as remains from aircraft strikes. We here present a DNA-based method that enables taxonomic identification of bird remains, even from material where the DNA is heavily degraded. The method is based on the amplification and sequencing of two short variable parts of the 16S region in the mitochondrial genome. To demonstrate the applicability of this approach, we evaluated the method on a set of Holocene and Late Pleistocene postcranial bird bones from several palaeontological and archaeological sites in Europe with good success.

  • Efficiency determination of resistive plate chambers for fast quasi-monoenergetic neutrons
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 50:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Composite detectors made of stainless-steel converters and multigap resistive plate chambers have been irradiated with quasi-monoenergetic neutrons with a peak energy of 175 MeV. The neutron detection efficiency has been determined using two different methods. The data are in agreement with the output of Monte Carlo simulations. The simulations are then extended to study the response of a hypothetical array made of these detectors to energetic neutrons from a radioactive ion beam experiment.

  • Ion transport in inhomogeneous media based on the bipartition model for primary ions
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Computers & Mathematics with Applications. - : Elsevier BV. - 0898-1221. ; 60:8, s. 2445-2459
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present paper is focused on the mathematical modeling of the charged particle transport in nonuniform media. We study the energy deposition of high energy protons and electrons in an energy range of approximate to 50-500 MeV. This work is an extension of the bipartition model; for high energy electrons studied by Luo and Brahme in [Z. Luo, A. Brahme, High energy electron transport, Phys. Rev. B 46 (1992) 739-752] [42]; and for light ions studied by Luo and Wang in [Z. Luo, S. Wang, Bipartition model of ion transport: an outline of new range theory for light ions, Phys. Rev. B 36 (1987) 1885-1893]; to the field of high energy ions in inhomogeneous media with the retained energy-loss straggling term. In the bipartition model, the transport equation is split into a coupled system of convection diffusion equations controlled by a partition condition. A similar split is obtained in an asymptotic expansion approach applied to the linear transport equation yielding pencil beam and broad beam models, which are again convection diffusion type equations. We shall focus on the bipartition model applied for solving three types of problems: (i) normally incident ion transport in a slab; (ii) obliquely incident ion transport in a semi-infinite medium; (iii) energy deposition of ions in a multilayer medium. The broad beam model of the proton absorbed dose was illustrated with the results of a modified Monte Carlo code: SHIELD - HIT+.

  • Efficacy of a novel online integrated treatment for problem gambling and tobacco smoking: Results of a randomized controlled trial
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of behavioral addictions. - : Akademiai Kiado Zrt.. - 2063-5303 .- 2062-5871. ; 12:1, s. 168-181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aimsProblem gambling and tobacco use are highly comorbid among adults. However, there are few treatment frameworks that target both gambling and tobacco use simultaneously (i.e., an integrated approach), while also being accessible and evidence-based. The aim of this two-arm open label RCT was to examine the efficacy of an integrated online treatment for problem gambling and tobacco use.MethodsA sample of 209 participants (Mage = 37.66, SD = 13.81; 62.2% female) from North America were randomized into one of two treatment conditions (integrated [n = 91] or gambling only [n = 118]) that lasted for eight weeks and consisted of seven online modules. Participants completed assessments at baseline, after treatment completion, and at 24-week follow-up.ResultsWhile a priori planned generalized linear mixed models showed no condition differences on primary (gambling days, money spent, time spent) and secondary outcomes, both conditions did appear to significantly reduce problem gambling and smoking behaviours over time. Post hoc analyses showed that reductions in smoking and gambling craving were correlated with reductions in days spent gambling, as well as with gambling disorder symptoms. Relatively high (versus low) nicotine replacement therapy use was associated with greater reductions in gambling behaviours in the integrated treatment condition.Discussion and conclusionsWhile our open label RCT does not support a clear benefit of integrated treatment, findings suggest that changes in smoking and gambling were correlated over time, regardless of treatment condition, suggesting that more research on mechanisms of smoking outcomes in the context of gambling treatment may be relevant.
