  • TRY plant trait database - enhanced coverage and open access
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Global Change Biology. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 1354-1013 .- 1365-2486. ; 26:1, s. 119-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plant traits-the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants-determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits-almost complete coverage for 'plant growth form'. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait-environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives.

  • Polysaccharide nanocomposites in wastewater treatment : A review
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Chemosphere. - : Elsevier. - 0045-6535 .- 1879-1298. ; 347
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In modern times, wastewater treatment is vital due to increased water contamination arising from pollutants such as nutrients, pathogens, heavy metals, and pharmaceutical residues. Polysaccharides (PSAs) are natural, renewable, and non-toxic biopolymers used in wastewater treatment in the field of gas separation, liquid filtration, adsorption processes, pervaporation, and proton exchange membranes. Since addition of nanoparticles to PSAs improves their sustainability and strength, nanocomposite PSAs has gained significant attention for wastewater treatment in the past decade. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of PSA-based nanocomposites used for efficient wastewater treatment, focusing on adsorption, photocatalysis, and membrane-based methods. It also discusses potential future applications, challenges, and opportunities in adsorption, filtration, and photocatalysis. Recently, PSAs have shown promise as adsorbents in biological-based systems, effectively removing heavy metals that could hinder microbial activity. Cellulose-mediated adsorbents have successfully removed various pollutants from wastewater, including heavy metals, dyes, oil, organic solvents, pesticides, and pharmaceutical residues. Thus, PSA nanocomposites would support biological processes in wastewater treatment plants. A major concern is the discharge of antibiotic wastes from pharmaceutical industries, posing significant environmental and health risks. PSA-mediated bio-adsorbents, like clay polymeric nanocomposite hydrogel beads, efficiently remove antibiotics from wastewater, ensuring water quality and ecosystem balance. The successful use of PSA-mediated bio-adsorbents in wastewater treatment depends on ongoing research to optimize their application and evaluate their potential environmental impacts. Implementing these eco-friendly adsorbents on a large scale holds great promise in significantly reducing water pollution, safeguarding ecosystems, and protecting human health.

  • Kelvin probe and ultraviolet photoemission measurements of indium tin oxide work function: : a comparison
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Synthetic metals. - 0379-6779 .- 1879-3290. ; 111-112, s. 311-314
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report a comparison of the work functions of thin films of indium tin oxide (ITO), carried out by means of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and by measurements of the contact potential difference with respect to a gold reference electrode (Kelvin probe (KP) method). We investigated commercially available ITOs both "as-received", and after certain surface treatments, such as oxygen plasma. First, we find measurable discrepancies between KP values measured with three different instruments, and between the KP and the UPS values. Secondly, and unexpectedly, we find that the KP, although more sensitive than UPS, does not detect certain differences between ITOs with different surface treatments. We discuss the results in view of the different environments in which the measurements are carried out (UHV for the UPS and air/Ar for the Kelvin method), of the effects which may be induced by the high-energy photon irradiation in the UPS measurement, and of the stability of the gold probe work function in gas ambient. We conclude that UPS is better-suited for absolute work function determination, although KP remains a convenient and inexpensive tool for fast screening of contact potential differences. • Pattern Matching Based Sensor Identification Layer for an Android Platform
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Wireless Communications & Mobile Computing. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1530-8669 .- 1530-8677.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As sensor-related technologies have been developed, smartphones obtain more information from internal and external sensors. This interaction accelerates the development of applications in the Internet of Things environment. Due to many attributes that may vary the quality of the IoT system, sensor manufacturers provide their own data format and application even if there is a well-defined standard, such as ISO/IEEE 11073 for personal health devices. In this paper, we propose a client-server-based sensor adaptation layer for an Android platform to improve interoperability among nonstandard sensors. Interoperability is an important quality aspect for the IoT that may have a strong impact on the system especially when the sensors are coming from different sources. Here, the server compares profiles that have clues to identify the sensor device with a data packet stream based on a modified Boyer-Moore-Horspool algorithm. Our matching model considers features of the sensor data packet. To verify the operability, we have implemented a prototype of this proposed system. The evaluation results show that the start and end pattern of the data packet are more efficient when the length of the data packet is longer.

  • What Factors are Important to Patients when Assessing Treatment Response : An International Cross-sectional Survey
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Acta Dermato-Venereologica. - : Acta dermato-venereologica. - 0001-5555 .- 1651-2057. ; 97:1, s. 86-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated the perspective of international patients on individual symptoms of atopic dermatitis (eczema) in determining treatment response. A questionnaire was developed to evaluate the importance of symptoms from the patient's perspective. Patients were asked: "How important are these features in deciding whether or not a treatment is working?", and rated symptoms on a 5-point Likert scale. Patients were approached via Harmonising Outcome Measures for Eczema (HOME) collaborators and self-selected to take part in the on-line survey. Patients from 34 countries (n = 1,111) completed the survey; of these, 423 (38.3%) were parents of children with eczema. Ten items were rated as being "quite important" or "very important" by more than 80% of the respondents: itch, pain/soreness, skin feels hot or inflamed, bleeding, involvement of visible or sensitive body sites, cracks, sleep difficulties, amount of body affected, and weeping/oozing. These results may be of use in determining the face validity of scales from a cross-cultural patients' perspective.
