  • PriMO-5G : Making firefighting smarter with immersive videos through 5G
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IEEE 5G World Forum, 5GWF 2019. - : IEEE. - 9781728136271 ; , s. 280-285
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we introduce PriMO-5G which is an EU-Korea collaboration project studying the use of 5G technologies and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones to enhance the safety and efficiency of firefighting operations. We start by describing envisaged use cases of smart firefighting focusing on how the 5G communications with drones can help the firefighting. Inspired by the use cases, we identify several research challenges that call for new solutions in 5G radios and cores for mission-critical services. Then, a discussion of a new framework for defining key performance indicators (KPIs) follows. Finally, we introduce our effort and future plans for the demonstration of the technologies that the PriMO-5G develops.

  • Social Networking sites for Interdisciplinary Learning at Workplace : Work integrated informal Learning (WiiL)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Advanced Computing, Communication and Information Sciences (ICACCI-2016). - : Pushpa Publishing House. ; , s. 9-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Work Integrated Learning (WIL) studies usually focuses on educational situations when professional organizations are actively involved in learning processes for students in higher education. However, after completing the institutional period entering the professional arena, the professional person is still actually a student at the workplace as s/he never stops learning. Learning within the organization is not only linked to the formal training and education of the employees, but also to informal processes of sharing knowledge. The knowledge is often embedded in organizational activities, practices and norms, as well as in social ties among individuals in the organization. Our analysis of employees' behavior and acceptance of online social networking as an information system (IS) of learning is performed by a descriptive case survey within a telecom corporation in Pakistan. Thepurpose of our study is to bring an informal learning system at workplace. In this study we quantitative data isobtained from 105 out of 180 targeted employees. The results show that a majority of the studied employees favors social networking to connect colleagues at different levels and more than half of the respondents share their knowledge and experiences using social sites. Nearly half of the respondents strongly agree that knowledge sharing is an important role of social sites within the organization and many are in favor of social media as an informal learning system. The results also show how the professionals use social networking sites to share their experiences and to build a virtual break in hierarchical levels of professions. This paper illustrates the benefits of social networking sites as an informal work integrated learning tool that also serves as an IS model for the organization.

  • Cooperative transmissions in ultra-dense networks under a bounded dual-slope path loss model
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781538638736
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an ultra-dense network (UDN) where there are more base stations (BSs) than active users, it is possible that many BSs are instantaneously left idle. Thus, how to utilize these dormant BSs by means of cooperative transmission is an interesting question. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a UDN with two types of cooperation schemes: Non-coherent joint transmission (JT) without channel state information (CSI) and coherent JT with full CSI knowledge. We consider a bounded dual-slope path loss model to describe UDN environments where a user has several BSs in the near-field and the rest in the far-field. Numerical results show that non-coherent JT cannot improve the user spectral efficiency (SE) due to the simultaneous increment in signal and interference powers. For coherent JT, the achievable SE gain depends on the range of near-field, the relative densities of BSs and users, and the CSI accuracy. Finally, we assess the energy efficiency (EE) of cooperation in UDN. Despite costing extra energy consumption, cooperation can still improve EE under certain conditions.

  • QUASAR scenarios for white space assessments and exploitation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: URSI EMC conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a unifying scenario classification model and a selection of scenarios, developed within the EU FP7 QUASAR project to study secondary spectrum usage. The classification model categorizes scenarios from technical, regulatory, and economic perspective. It enables the derivation of the most promising scenarios of secondary spectrum access: Cellular and WiFi-like usage of TV white spaces, wireless backhauling using secondary spectrum access, license exempt use of the radar bands, use of the aeronautical bands for mobile broadband and cognitive machine-to-machine communication. These scenarios are presented in more detail along with motivations of why they are interesting to study further. The scenarios will provide the basis for the future work within the QUASAR project, which has the overall objective to assess the amount of useful spectrum opportunities for secondary spectrum access.
