  • Quantitative assessment of structural and compositional colors induced by femtosecond laser : A case study on 301LN stainless steel surface
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Applied Surface Science. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0169-4332 .- 1873-5584. ; 484, s. 655-662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The topic of durable coloration and passivation of metal surfaces using state-of-the-art techniques has gained enormous attention and devotion with unremitting efforts of researchers worldwide. Although femtosecond laser marking has been performed on many metals, the related coloration mechanisms are mainly referred to structural colors produced by the interaction of visible light with periodic surface structures. Yet, general quantitative determination of the resulting colors and their origins remain elusive. In this work, we realized quantitative separations of structural colors and compositional pigmentary colors on 301LN austenitic stainless steel surfaces that were treated by femtosecond laser machining. The overall color information was extracted from surface reflectance, with structural color given by numerical simulations, and oxide compositions by chemical state analysis. It was shown that the laser-induced apparent colors of 301LN steel surfaces were combinations of structural and compositional colorations, with the former dominating the angular response and the latter setting up the brownish bases. In addition to the quantification of colors, the analysis method in this work may be useful for the generation and specification of tailored color palettes for practical coloration on metal surfaces by femtosecond laser marking.

  • Un-Cooled 10 Gb/s dilute-nitride optical transmitters for the 1300 nm wavelength range
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2008 International Semiconductor Conference, CAS 2008; Sinaia; Romania; 13 October 2008 through 15 October 2008. - 9781424420049 ; 1, s. 61-70
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dilute-nitride-based edge-emitting Fabry-Perot lasers with record performances have been used to build un-cooled optical transceiver modules. The paper presents and analyses some of the achieved performances starting from chip level to optical link transmission experiments. The studies, performed within the EU-FP6 project FAST ACCESS, prove that the dilute-nitride GaInAsN lasers are a good solution for low-cost un-cooled transmitters targeting short and medium distance optical communications in a wide range of applications, from supercomputers and server farms to metropolitan and access area networks.

  • Too Sharp for its Own Good – Tool Edge Deformation Mechanisms in the Initial Stages of Metal Cutting
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Procedia Manufacturing. - : Elsevier BV. - 2351-9789. ; 11, s. 449-456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2017 Metal cutting simulations have become an important part of cutting tool design and the research in the field in general. One of the most important aspects of modeling is the accuracy of the tool geometry. 3D microscopy is used for measuring the tool edge radius with good accuracy. However, especially with sharp tools, i.e. small tool edge radii, the measurements, no matter how accurate, are not much of a use, since the initial wear, or deformation is so fast in the first 1-30 seconds into the cutting, that the tool geometry is significantly different than the one measured from the new tool. The average tool life is often set to 15 minutes. Therefore, the cutting simulations that only predict the tool behavior in the first seconds of its lifetime are not very useful in predicting the process variables throughout the tool life. Simulations with creep and elastic-plastic material model however, can predict the initial deformation of the tool. This tool shape can be then used in rigid tool model to predict the process variables in the steady wear region of the tool life. This paper presents simulation model for predicting the initial tool edge deformation for WC-10%Co tool while machining AISI 304 stainless steel. The novelty in this approach is the simultaneous coupled calculation of contact surface temperature and stress and change of the tool shape.

  • Binding of Levosimendan, a Calcium Sensitizer, to Cardiac Troponin C
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - 0021-9258. ; 276:12, s. 9337-9343
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Levosimendan is an inodilatory drug that mediates its cardiac effect by the calcium sensitization of contractile proteins. The target protein of levosimendan is cardiac troponin C (cTnC). In the current work, we have studied the interaction of levosimendan with Ca2+-saturated cTnC by heteronuclear NMR and small angle x-ray scattering. A specific interaction between levosimendan and the Ca2+-loaded regulatory domain of recombinant cTnCC35S was observed. The changes in the NMR spectra of the N-domain of full-length cTnCC35S, due to the binding of levosimendan to the primary site, were indicative of a slow conformational exchange. In contrast, no binding of levosimendan to the regulatory domain of cTnCA-Cys, where all the cysteine residues are mutated to serine, was detected. Moreover, it was shown that levosimendan was in fast exchange on the NMR time scale with a secondary binding site in the C-domain of both cTnCC35S and cTnCA-Cys. The small angle x-ray scattering experiments confirm the binding of levosimendan to Ca2+-saturated cTnC but show no domain-domain closure. The experiments were run in the absence of the reducing agent dithiothreitol and the preservative sodium azide (NaN 3), since we found that levosimendan reacts with these chemicals, commonly used for preparation of NMR protein samples.

  • EISCAT_3D - a next-generation European radar system for upper atmosphere and geospace research
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Radio Science Bulletin. - 1024-4530. ; :333, s. 75-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The EISCAT Scientifi c Association, together with a number of collaborating institutions, has recently completed a feasibility and design study for an enhanced performance research radar facility to replace the existing EISCAT UHF and VHF systems. This study was supported by EU Sixth-Framework funding. The new radar retains the powerful multi-static geometry of the EISCAT UHF, but will employ phased arrays, direct-sampling receivers, and digital beamforming and beam steering. Design goals include, inter alia, a tenfold improvement in temporal and spatial resolution, an extension of the instantaneous measurement of full-vector ionospheric drift velocities from a single point to the entire altitude range of the radar, and an imaging capability to resolve small-scale structures. Prototype receivers and beamformers are currently being tested on a 48-element, 224 MHz array (the "Demonstrator") erected at the Kiruna EISCAT site, using the EISCAT VHF transmitter as an illuminator.
