  • Occupational balance and associated factors among students during higher education within healthcare and social work in Sweden : a multicentre repeated cross-sectional study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - London : BMJ Publishing Group Ltd. - 2044-6055. ; 14:4, s. e080995-e080995
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectiveThe aim was to explore whether occupational balance is associated with health, health-promoting resources, healthy lifestyle and social study factors among students during higher education within healthcare and social work.DesignThe study has a multicentre repeated cross-sectional design. Data were collected via a self-reported, web-based questionnaire based on the validated instruments: the 11-item Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ11), the Sense of Coherence (SOC) Scale, the Salutogenic Health Indicator Scale (SHIS) and five questions from the General Nordic Questionnaire (QPS Nordic) together with questions about general health and lifestyle factors.SettingStudents at six universities in western Sweden at one of the following healthcare or social work programmes: biomedical scientists, dental hygienists, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, radiology nurses and social workers. Participants Of 2283 students, 851 (37.3%) participated.ResultsThe students experienced that occupational balance increased during education. The total OBQ11 score was higher among students in semesters 4 and 6/7, compared with semester 1 students. Students with higher OBQ11 also reported higher SOC throughout their education, while health seemed to decrease. Students who reported higher levels of OBQ11 reported lower levels of health and well-being in semesters 4 and 6/7, compared with semester 1. There was an opposite pattern for students reporting lower levels of OBQ11.ConclusionsThe association between higher levels of OBQ11 and lower levels of health and well-being is remarkable. There is a need for more research on this contradiction and what it means for students’ health and well-being in the long run.

  • The effect of in-cylinder gas flow on the interpretation of the ionization sensor signal
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: SAE Technical Papers. - Warrendale : S A E Inc..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The location of the peak pressure can serve as a control parameter to adjust ignition timing and optimize engine performance. The ionization sensor, an electrical probe for combustion diagnostics, can provide information about the peak pressure location. However, the reliability of such information is rather poor. In-cylinder gas flow at the electrodes may be one reason for this. We present results from an investigation of the relationship between ionization sensor current and pressure under various gas flow conditions. The gas flow velocity in the vicinity of the electrode gap was measured by LDA. From the results one may infer how the in-cylinder gas flow affects the reliability of the prediction of pressure peak location from the ionization sensor signal. One finding is that high bulk gas flow impairs the precision of the prediction in certain configurations.

  • Effects of an Empowerment-Based Health-Promotion School Intervention on Physical Activity and Sedentary Time among Adolescents in a Multicultural Area
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - Basel : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 15:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physical activity (PA) decreases with age, and interventions are needed to promote PA during adolescence, especially, among those in low-socioeconomic status (SES) areas. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a two-year, empowerment-based health-promotion school intervention had any effects on changes in (a) moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), (b) sedentary time (SED), (c) exercise training (ET) frequency, and (d) ET duration, among adolescents. Participants (aged 12-13 years at baseline) from one intervention school and two control schools, were recruited from a multicultural area of Sweden, characterized by low-SES. During the course of the two-year intervention, a total of 135 participants (43% boys) were included in the study. The intervention was developed and implemented as a result of cooperation and shared decision-making among the researchers and the participants. MVPA and SED were measured with accelerometers, and ET frequency and duration was self-reported at the beginning of the seventh, eighth, and ninth grade, respectively. There were no significant effects of the two-year, empowerment-based health-promotion school intervention on changes in the accelerometer-measured MVPA and SED, or the self-reported ET frequency and duration, among the adolescents. Overall, the intervention was unsuccessful at promoting PA and reducing SED. Several possible explanations for the intervention's lack of effects are discussed.

  • Deadline first scheduling in switched real-time Ethernet - deadline partitioning issues and software implementation experiments
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Euromicro RTS 2002. - Los Alamitos, Calif. : IEEE Computer Society. - 0769516653 - 9780769516653 - 076951667X - 9780769516677 ; , s. 68-71
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents work on a switched Ethernet network extended to allow for earliest deadline first (EDF) scheduling. We show by example that asymmetric deadline partitioning between the links of a real-time channel can increase the utilization substantially, still not violating the real-time guarantees. We also report measurements on a software implementation of the switch on an ordinary PC.

  • Flerspråkighet som en resurs i NO-klassrummet
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Pedagogisk forskning i Sverige. - Malmö : Lunds universitet. - 1401-6788 .- 2001-3345. ; 21:1-2, s. 30-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
Nyckelord: kodväxling, diskursiv rörlighet, flerspråkighet, nyanlända, lärande i NO

  • Multilingual students' use of translanguaging in science classrooms
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Science Education. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 0950-0693 .- 1464-5289. ; 41:15, s. 2049-2069
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study describes multilingual students’ authentic use of their first and second languages in a translanguaging science classroom, from a sociocultural perspective. The study is ethnographic, and has followed some lessons each month in a translanguaging science classroom at a primary school for three years. The observed lessons were documented by four video cameras and four audio recorders, while field notes and different types of students’ texts and other teaching materials were also collected. In order investigate how language operates, and to realise the meaning semantically, we analysed the students’ use of both first and second language to tie paradigmatic relations, and how they move in linguistic loops between languages and discourses. The results illustrate the ways in which a translanguaging science classroom constitutes a resource in joint negotiations of the scientific content and its related language for multilingual students, and benefits the students’ ability to relate and contextualise the science content to prior experience. The creation of translanguaging science classrooms, in which students’ experiences and diverse cultural and linguistic resources interweave with school science, and in which multilingual students are enabled and encouraged to use all available language resources, has important implications for science education.

  • Early prehospital assessment of non-urgent patients and outcomes at the appropriate level of care : A prospective exploratory study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Emergency Nursing. - London : Elsevier. - 1755-599X .- 1878-013X. ; 32, s. 45-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The Ambulance Organization of Sweden provides qualified medical assessment and treatment by ambulance nurses based on patient needs regarding appropriate levels of care. A new model for patients with non-urgent medical conditions has been introduced. The main objective of this study was to examine early prehospital assessment of non-urgent patients, and its impact on the choice of the appropriate level of care. Methods: The study design was a 1-year, prospective study, involving an ambulance district in southwestern Sweden with a population of 78,000. Eligible patients were from18 years of age, assessed as priority GREEN by Rapid Emergency Triage and Treatment System (RETTS). Ambulance nurses contacted primary care physicians on decisions on whether a patient should be transported to a primary healthcare unit or an A&E. Data was collected from electronic health records from April 2014 to July 2015. A comparison was made with a retrospective control group without consulting a physician concerning the appropriate level of care. Results: 394 patients were included, 184 in the intervention group, and 210 in the control group. There were statistically significant differences in favor of the study group (p < 0.001) regarding no transport, or transport and admission to an A&E. The groups did not differ significantly regarding transport to a primary care unit. Conclusion: This prehospital assessment model indicates a decrease in ambulance transports to an A&E and admissions to a hospital ward. Collaboration between ambulance nurses and primary physicians affects the decision for the appropriate level of care for patients with a non-urgent condition. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

  • Learning Benefits of Using 2D Versus 3D Maps: Evidence from a Randomized Controlled Experiment
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of geography. - New York : Informa UK Limited. - 0022-1341 .- 1752-6868. ; 112:3, s. 87-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The traditional important role of maps used for educational purposes has gained further potential with recent advances in GIS technology. But beyond specific courses in cartography this potential seems little realized in geography teaching. This article investigates the extent to which any learning benefits may be derived from the use of such technologies. A controlled experiment was conducted to examine whether information recall is improved when cartographic information on population distribution is presented in 2D versus 3D form. The results show statistically significant differences in learning benefits between the two formats, largely in favor of 2D representation. These findings suggest that learning benefits can be derived from paying greater attention to map format in educational settings.

  • The catabolic capacity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is preserved to a higher extent during carbon compared to nitrogen starvation
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Yeast. - Chichester : Wiley. - 0749-503X .- 1097-0061. ; 18:15, s. 1371-1381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A comparison of catabolic capacity was made between S. cerevisiae cells subjected to 24 h carbon or nitrogen starvation. The cells were shifted to starvation conditions at the onset of respiratory growth on ethanol in aerobic batch cultures, using glucose as the carbon and energy source. The results showed that the catabolic capacity was preserved to a much larger extent during carbon compared to nitrogen starvation. Nitrogen starvation experiments were made in the presence of ethanol (not glucose) to exclude the effect of glucose transport inactivation (Busturia and Lagunas, 1986). Hence, the difference in catabolic capacity could not be attributed to differences in glucose transport capacity during these conditions. In order to understand the reason for this difference in starvation response, measurement of protein composition, adenine nucleotides, inorganic phosphate, poly phosphate and storage carbohydrates were performed. No clear correlation between any of these variables and catabolic capacity after starvation could be obtained. However, there was a positive correlation between total catabolic activity and intracellular ATP concentration when glucose was added to starved cells. The possible mechanism for this correlation, as well as what determines the ATP level, is discussed.
