    • The report reviews field studies and research conducted in Sweden during the last 50 years to determine the environmental impact of effluents from the pulp and paper industry on the aquatic ecosystems. The studies show that the ecosystem resilience and capability to recover has been strong after successively decreased load of organic matter, nutrients, and toxic substances, but there are still some remaining ecotoxicological disturbances in the receiving Waters.

  • Återhämtning och kvarvarande miljöeffekter i skogsindustrins recipienter - Utvärdering av 50 års miljöundersökningar

    • En historisk genomgång av produktion och utsläpp till vatten av miljöstörande ämnen från elva utvalda fabriker, olika åtgärder för att minska utsläppen, data från recipientkontroll, undersökningar i samband med tillståndsärenden och en rad forskningsrapporter har legat till grund för analys och slutsatser av återhämtningsförlopp och kvarvarande miljöeffekter i recipienterna. Rapporten visar att miljöpåverkan från massa- och papperstillverkning i Sverige i de flesta fall har begränsats mycket kraftigt. Dock finns fortfarande kvarstående problem och den ekologiska statusen bedöms vara otillräcklig i många recipienter. I rapporten föreslås att ett antal utredningar och uppföljande studier genomförs i syfte att belysa viktiga kvarstående problemställningar.

  • Ultrafast Vibrations of Gold Nanorings

    • We investigate the vibrational modes of gold nanorings on a silica substrate with an ultrafast optical technique. By comparison with numerical simulations, we identify several resonances in the gigahertz range associated with axially symmetric deformations of the nanoring and substrate. We elucidate the corresponding mode shapes and find that the substrate plays an important role in determining the mode damping. This study demonstrates the need for a plasmonic nano-optics approach to understand the optical excitation and detection mechanisms for the vibrations of plasmonic nanostructures.

  • A New Halocarbon Absorption Model Based on HITRAN Cross-Section Data and New Estimates of Halocarbon Instantaneous Clear-Sky Radiative Forcing

    • The article describes a new practical model for the infrared absorption of chlorofluorocarbons and other gases with dense spectra, based on high-resolution transmission molecular absorption database (HITRAN) absorption cross-sections. The model is very simple, consisting of frequency-dependent polynomial coefficients describing the pressure and temperature dependence of absorption. Currently it is implemented for the halocarbon species required by the Radiative Forcing Model Intercomparison Project. In cases where cross-section data is available at a range of different temperatures and pressures, this approach offers practical advantages compared to previously available options, and is traceable, since the polynomial coefficients follow directly from the laboratory spectra. The new model is freely available and has several important applications, notably in remote sensing and in developing advanced radiation schemes for global circulation models that include halocarbon absorption. For demonstration, the model is applied to the problem of computing instantaneous clear-sky halocarbon radiative efficiencies and present day radiative forcing. Results are in reasonable agreement with earlier assessments that were carried out with the less explicit Pinnock method, and thus broadly validate that method. Plain Language Summary Chlorofluorocarbons and other related gases have dense and complicated absorption spectra that can be measured in the laboratory. We bring such measurements to a form that can be used for simulations of the transfer of radiation through the atmosphere. Then we use the new model to calculate new estimates of the climate impact of these man-made gases. The results broadly validate earlier calculations that were done with a less explicit method.

  • On-line solid debris analysis of oil using vision technology on open computing platform

    • This article describes a case-study related to on-line condition monitoring measurements in process industry. A platform for on-line, real-time and remotely operated condition monitoring has been developed. The system consists of an open source based embedded and cost effective DSP computing platform, a machine vision sensor for solid debris analysis of oils, and interfaces for other measurement technologies (e.g. vibration analysis and/or temperature measurements). In addition, the platform is equipped with data transmission interface that enables remote operation and control. Real-time analysis of solid particles in oil is useful in many preventive condition monitoring applications, for example, in the lubrication circuit of a paper machine or with cold rolling lubrication oils. In the case of a paper machine the generated information can be used to pinpoint upcoming failures in the machine elements (e.g. bearings, gears etc.). Whereas in the case of cold rolling applications the information is useful to prevent quality problems in the rolled metal product. In the both applications the presented system enables also monitoring failures in the filtration system. Preliminary results and designs show that the system is able to detect and analyse size and shape for particles larger than 50 micrometers continuously with a frame rate of 5 Hz from the oil flow volume of 13.8 ml/s and flow speed of 60 mm/s. The system is in progress of being further developed in collaboration with the industry. Easy integration of different sensors and real-time measurements make the system a powerful tool for making maintenance decisions in process industry

  • Experimental Investigation of the Near Wall Flow Downstream of a Passenger Car Wheel Arch

    • The flow around and downstream of the front wheels of passenger cars is highly complex and characterized by flow structure interactions between the external flow, fluid exiting through the wheelhouse, flow from the engine bay and the underbody. In the present paper the near wall flow downstream of the front wheel house is analyzed, combining two traditional methods. A tuft visualization method is used to obtain the limiting streamline pattern and information about the near wall flow direction. Additionally, time resolved surface pressure measurements are used to study the pressure distribution and the standard deviation. The propagation of the occurring flow structures is investigated by cross correlations of the pressure signal and a spectral analysis provides the characteristic frequencies of the investigated flow. It is found that two main flow phenomena can be observed: one originates from flow exiting the upper wheelhouse and a second one resulting from a separation on the lower wheel house edge. The frequency spectrum reveals a dominant Strouhal number of 0.2. As the observed flow structures are attributed to the wheel-wheelhouse interaction, a closed wheelhouse configuration is also investigated and the results confirm that the fluctuations and observed flow structures are created by the flow interaction between the wheel, wheelhouse and the rotation of the wheel.

    • Recent years more research has been focusing on utilizing biomass in the blast furnaces (BFs). One driving force is linked to the climate change mitigation, i.e. to reduce CO2 emission from fossil reducing agents or fuels, by using biomass. The amounts of biomass that could be utilized in BF is limited by different parameters, such as metallurgical properties of reducing agents, fuel properties such as volatile content, fixed carbon and oxygen content, ash chemistry (S, Na2O, K2O, etc.). In this paper, different types of biomass products in the form of solid, liquid and gas are investigated as injectants to the blast furnace. The modelling work has been done for a BF from a Nordic country. The possible amounts of injected biomass products are presented. With the replacement ratios of pulverized coal (PC), the potential CO2emission reduction when injecting different biomass products is quantified. In addition, the strategy of using biomass at the studied iron-making plant is discussed. AISTech 2015 Proceedings
