  • Normative modeling of brain morphometry in Clinical High-Risk for Psychosis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: bioRxiv : the preprint server for biology. - : Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • ImportanceThe lack of robust neuroanatomical markers of psychosis risk has been traditionally attributed to heterogeneity. A complementary hypothesis is that variation in neuroanatomical measures in the majority of individuals at psychosis risk may be nested within the range observed in healthy individuals.ObjectiveTo quantify deviations from the normative range of neuroanatomical variation in individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and evaluate their overlap with healthy variation and their association with positive symptoms, cognition, and conversion to a psychotic disorder.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsClinical, IQ and FreeSurfer-derived regional measures of cortical thickness (CT), cortical surface area (SA), and subcortical volume (SV) from 1,340 CHR-P individuals [47.09% female; mean age: 20.75 (4.74) years] and 1,237 healthy individuals [44.70% female; mean age: 22.32 (4.95) years] from 29 international sites participating in the ENIGMA Clinical High Risk for Psychosis Working Group.Main Outcomes and MeasuresFor each regional morphometric measure, z-scores were computed that index the degree of deviation from the normative means of that measure in a healthy reference population (N=37,407). Average deviation scores (ADS) for CT, SA, SV, and globally across all measures (G) were generated by averaging the respective regional z-scores. Regression analyses were used to quantify the association of deviation scores with clinical severity and cognition and two-proportion z-tests to identify case-control differences in the proportion of individuals with infranormal (z<-1.96) or supranormal (z>1.96) scores.ResultsCHR-P and healthy individuals overlapped in the distributions of the observed values, regional z-scores, and all ADS vales. The proportion of CHR-P individuals with infranormal or supranormal values in any metric was low (<12%) and similar to that of healthy individuals. CHR-P individuals who converted to psychosis compared to those who did not convert had a higher percentage of infranormal values in temporal regions (5-7% vs 0.9-1.4%). In the CHR-P group, only the ADSSAshowed significant but weak associations (|β|<0.09; PFDR<0.05) with positive symptoms and IQ.Conclusions and RelevanceThe study findings challenge the usefulness of macroscale neuromorphometric measures as diagnostic biomarkers of psychosis risk and suggest that such measures do not provide an adequate explanation for psychosis risk.Key pointsQuestionIs the risk of psychosis associated with brain morphometric changes that deviate significantly from healthy variation?FindingsIn this study of 1340 individuals high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and 1237 healthy participants, individual-level variation in macroscale neuromorphometric measures of the CHR-P group was largely nested within healthy variation and was not associated with the severity of positive psychotic symptoms or conversion to a psychotic disorder.MeaningThe findings suggest the macroscale neuromorphometric measures have limited utility as diagnostic biomarkers of psychosis risk.

  • Production Across the Nordics
  • 2022
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the uncertain and volatile market that companies are currently facing worldwide, researchers and engineers become a key link to strengthen the industry and universities in order to understand, communicate, and tackle current challenges. In the PhD course, International Production, the goal is to investigate what makes Sweden and Iceland booming industrial hubs driven by technology. Through the visits to different types of industries, such as fintech, medical, or automotive industry, we as researchers have gained a better understanding of the challenges they are currently facing. This report is a summary of our findings and observations.   The participants have focused on the six challenge areas highlighted within the Produktion2030 graduate school and summarize their findings as:   •Resource-efficient production:  Data as a resource is becoming increasingly important for the majority of companies in the Nordics and the application of traditional resource management tools on data is a suggested area for future research.   •Flexible production: To strengthen organizations by enabling production systems to be flexible to address market variations is a key challenge to consider in the manufacturing industry •Virtual production development: Digitalization level is distinct in each Nodic country with the reason that each country has its own digitalization transformation policy and different measures on digitalization level.  •Humans in the production system: Humans are central in the production systems of the visited companies. Use of automation technology and AI to support humans in their work may become more common in the future. •Circular production systems and maintenance: Circular production systems require a complex approach through the whole value chain. Industry in the Nordics has started the adoption of a circularity approach.  •Integrated product and production development:  Integration of product and production development is a key business factor for the Nordic countries, and geographical proximity between the two departments can have a beneficial effect.   We hope that this report provides more details regarding the success and current challenges of the Swedish and Icelandic enterprises.

  • Glacio-eustatic influence on deep water circulation in the South China Sea over the past 500 kyrs – implications for global biogeochemical cycling
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting, American Geophysical Union, Cairns, Australia, July/August 2008.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We provide new evidence for the development of a stable estuarinecirculation characterized by stagnating water bodies, nutrient recycling and increased primary productivity in the South China Seaduring glacial intervals caused by the closure of the shallow andnarrow straits connecting the South China Sea in the south and west. Our main evidence comes from records of Mn concentrations and Mn/Al ratios in two sedimentary cores from the northern and southeastern South China Sea covering the last 500 ky. Concentrations and Mn/Al ratios of the redox sensitive element Mn show clear glacial-interglacial cycles with maxima during interglacial periods and minima during glacial periods. These cycles indicate ventilation cycles of the bottom water connected to the glacial-interglacial changes in sea level. In contrast, total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations display an opposite pattern with pronounced maxima during glacial times, especially in the southern part of the basin. The variations in TOC can be ascribed to two factors. Firstly to variations in primary productivity controlled by variations in theintensity of the winter monsoon. Secondly to the degree of preservation of TOC controlled by variations in ventilation, ultimately controlled by sea level. Variations in TOC consequentlyrepresent a superimposition of sea level influenced preservationcontrol and primarily winter monsoon driven variations in primaryproductivity intensity. The decrease in Mn correspond to times when sea level dropped below 40-50 m. Larger amplitude of the variations in TOC and Mn in the southern part of the basin compared to the northern sites suggest that oxygen depletion and nutrient recycling was stronger in the parts of the basin situated the furthest from the only remaining opening to the open Pacific, the Luzon strait.
