    • Fibre+ (2012-2015) is a European project aiming to develop potential treatments for recovered fibre modification capable of improving the recyclability and the properties of recycled papers. This study reports on the results on fibre morphology, paper properties and recyclability of fibres and papers modified with different chemicals and approaches from both laboratory and pilot plant trials. Sixteen modification chemical agents were studied in a set of laboratory trials. The raw material used was 100% recycled paper grade from old corrugated board containers (OCC). The laboratory analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of fibre modifications treatments included FBRM for pre-screening of chemicals, preparation of laboratory control and modified handsheets to a target grammage of 80 g/m2, and measurement of the fibre morphology, recyclability and mechanical and physical properties of the modified handsheets. Based on the results of laboratory testing, Fibre+ modifications pilot plant trials were carried out at a FEX paper machine. Furthermore the effect of the better dispersion of the cPAM using an ECOWIRL was studied. The overall laboratory and pilot plant results were promising for further implementation of the Fibre+ modifications at industrial scale and projection of improvements of fibre and paper properties on the performance of packaging products thereof

  • Transmit Beamforming for Inter-Operator Spectrum Sharing : From Theory to Practice

    • In this paper, four transmit beamforming (BF) techniques are selected and compared to realize inter-operator spectrum sharing, which is a promising solution for the spectrum shortage problem. The BF techniques include two game-theoretic (GT) algorithms, zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE). After a brief description of the BF techniques in a multiple-input single-output (MISO) system, their computational complexity is analyzed. The effectiveness of these techniques in real radio frequency (RF) signal transmission is verified by implementation on a flexible hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testbed. First, several important aspects regarding practical implementation are discussed. Afterwards, the HIL measurement results are shown, where considerable sum rate gain can be observed due to spectrum sharing. Finally, the appropriate BF technique can be chosen based on a tradeoff between complexity and performance.

  • Producing water by condensation of humid air in buried pipe

    • This study investigates the possibility of using warm humid air for irrigation and drinking water production, by flowing air over the water surface in a solar still with saline or polluted water. Vapor will be saturated during mixing with the warm air in buried pipe. Finite difference method is employed to simulate the flow of the air long the pipe. The amount of water produced and buried pipe length depends upon the flow velocity, humid air properties and buried pipe diameter. The amount of water produced is 0.02525kg/s (0.0909m3/h). The length of the buried pipe needed in this study is 77.36m for a selected air flow velocity 5m/s with the properties of 70°C, 100% relative humidity at pipe inlet, 40°C and 100% relative humidity at pipe outlet of 0.2m pipe diameter. The results agree with a previous study (Gustafsson & Lindblom, 2001) with -4.0% deviation in water production and 7% of required pipe length

  • High temperature energy harvester for wireless sensors

    • Implementing energy harvesters and wireless sensors in jet engines will simplify development and decrease costs by reducing the need for cables. Such a device could include a small thermoelectric generator placed in the cooling channels of the jet engine where the temperature is between 500-900 degrees C. This paper covers the synthesis of suitable thermoelectric materials, design of module and proof of concept tests of a thermoelectric module. The materials and other design variables were chosen based on an analytic model and numerical analysis. The module was optimized for 600-800 degrees C with the thermoelectric materials n-type Ba8Ga16Ge30 and p-type La-doped Yb14MnSb11, both with among the highest reported figure-of-merit values, zT, for bulk materials in this region. The materials were synthesized and their structures confirmed by x-ray diffraction. Proof of concept modules containing only two thermoelectric legs were built and tested at high temperatures and under high temperature gradients. The modules were designed to survive an ambient temperature gradient of up to 200 degrees C. The first measurements at low temperature showed that the thermoelectric legs could withstand a temperature gradient of 123 degrees C and still be functional. The high temperature measurement with 800 degrees C on the hot side showed that the module remained functional at this temperature.

  • User Experience of Conveying Emotions by Touch

    • In the present study, 64 users were asked to convey eight distinct emotion to a humanoid Nao robot via touch, and were then asked to evaluate their experiences of performing that task. Large differences between emotions were revealed. Users perceived conveying of positive/pro-social emotions as significantly easier than negative emotions, with love and disgust as the two extremes. When asked whether they would act differently towards a human, compared to the robot, the users’ replies varied. A content analysis of interviews revealed a generally positive user experience (UX) while interacting with the robot, but users also found the task challenging in several ways. Three major themes with impact on the UX emerged; responsiveness, robustness, and trickiness. The results are discussed in relation to a study of human-human affective tactile interaction, with implications for human-robot interaction (HRI) and design of social and affective robotics in particular.

    • Operational train traffic is dependent on an efficient traffic plan monitored and executed by the traffic controllers, the proficient maneuvering of the trains by the train drivers, and on the interaction, communication, and coordination between these two work roles. The railway research community, and the branch of industry itself, has called for an integrated systems perspective for the whole train traffic system to achieve an efficient performance. As human-human and human-technology interactions are natural parts of the socio-technical system of train traffic, the aim of this paper is to provide illustrative examples for why a systems perspective is needed for the future of railway research. Furthermore, we present the theoretical framework of distributed cognition (DCog) as a necessary addition to the theoretical and methodological toolbox of the Human Factors and Ergonomics (HF&E) discipline. To realize efficient and coordinated processes involved in organizing and executing operational train traffic, the paper proposes that the DCog framework should be implemented in the train traffic domain as a viable approach forward.

    • The thermoelectric energy harvester went from simulations to synthesis of materials and fabrication of test prototypes. We also made measurements on a 1-couple module which did show that the technology is feasible, however very demanding and difficult to build at current state. We also showed with commercial modules that the high temperature energy harvester could power a Wi-Fi at current size of 1 cm2 and 0.4 g if a durable prototype with 7 couples could be manufactured successfully.
