  • Effect of thermal aging on microstructure and carbides of SA508/Alloy 52 dissimilar metal weld
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Characterization. - 1044-5803. ; 200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A narrow-gap SA508/Alloy 52 dissimilar metal weld (DMW) mock-up, fully representative of an actual nuclear component, was investigated in this work. The microstructure and carbides formed in the low alloy steel fusion boundary (FB) and heat affected zone (HAZ) can act as brittle fracture initiators and could influence the brittle fracture behavior. However, the amount of information available in the open literature on the microstructural changes and carbide formation in DMW occurring upon post-weld heat treatment and long-term thermal aging is very limited. The microstructure and carbide type, morphology and size in the carbide precipitation zone (CPZ, up to 1.5 μm from FB), carbon depletion zone (CDZ, up to 40–50 μm from FB) and HAZ (up to 2 mm from FB) of the plant-relevant DMW in post-weld heat-treated and thermally-aged (400 °C for 15,000 h, corresponding to 90 years of operation) conditions were analyzed with analytical electron microscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering and atom probe tomography. Long-term thermal aging increases the microhardness peak close to the FB, triples the width of the CPZ and coarsens the carbide size in the HAZ (up to a magnitude). There is no evidence of a significant phosphorus segregation to grain boundaries due to thermal aging.

  • Electronic and optical properties of TiO2
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The electronic and optical properties of the rutile titanium dioxide compound have been investigated experimentally by absorption measurements and theoretically by a full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method within the local density approximation (LDA). The thin films for the absorption measurements were prepared by DC magnetron sputtering. The theoretical results for the absorption compared qualitatively well with the experimental findings. The dielectric functions and band-structure have also been calculated, and the LDA band-gap energy is corrected by an on-site Coulomb potential.

  • Automated analysis of fetal cardiac function using color tissue Doppler imaging in second half of normal pregnancy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. - : WILEY. - 0960-7692 .- 1469-0705. ; 53:3, s. 348-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives Color tissue Doppler imaging (cTDI) is a promising tool for the assessment of fetal cardiac function. However, the analysis of myocardial velocity traces is cumbersome and time-consuming, limiting its application in clinical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate fetal cardiac function during the second half of pregnancy and to develop reference ranges using an automated method to analyze cTDI recordings from a cardiac four-chamber view. Methods This was a cross-sectional study including 201 normal singleton pregnancies between 18 and 42weeks of gestation. During fetal echocardiography, a four-chamber view of the heart was visualized and cTDI was performed. Regions of interest were positioned at the level of the atrioventricular plane in the left ventricular (LV), right ventricular (RV) and septal walls of the fetal heart, to obtain myocardial velocity traces that were analyzed offline using the automated algorithm. Peak myocardial velocities during atrial contraction (Am), ventricular ejection (Sm) and rapid ventricular filling, i. e. early diastole (Em), as well as the Em/Am ratio, mechanical cardiac time intervals and myocardial performance index (cMPI) were evaluated, and gestational age-specific reference ranges were constructed. Results At 18 weeks of gestation, the peak myocardial velocities, presented as fitted mean with 95% CI, were: LV Am, 3.39 (3.09-3.70) cm/s; LV Sm, 1.62 (1.46-1.79) cm/s; LV Em, 1.95 (1.75-2.15) cm/s; septal Am, 3.07 (2.80-3.36) cm/s; septal Sm, 1.93 (1.81-2.06) cm/s; septal Em, 2.57 (2.32-2.84) cm/s; RV Am, 4.89 (4.59-5.20) cm/s; RV Sm, 2.31 (2.16-2.46) cm/s; and RV Em, 2.94 (2.69-3.21) cm/s. At 42weeks of gestation, the peak myocardial velocities had increased to: LV Am, 4.25 (3.87-4.65) cm/s; LV Sm, 3.53 (3.19-3.89) cm/s; LV Em, 4.55 (4.18-4.94) cm/s; septal Am, 4.49 (4.17-4.82) cm/s; septal Sm, 3.36 (3.17-3.55) cm/s; septal Em, 3.76 (3.51-4.03) cm/s; RV Am, 6.52 (6.09-6.96) cm/s; RV Sm, 4.95 (4.59-5.32) cm/s; and RV Em, 5.42 (4.99-5.88) cm/s. The mechanical cardiac time intervals generally remained more stable throughout the second half of pregnancy, although, with increased gestational age, there was an increase in duration of septal and RV atrial contraction, LV pre-ejection and septal and RV ventricular ejection, while there was a decrease in duration of septal postejection. Regression equations used for the construction of gestational age-specific reference ranges for peak myocardial velocities, Em/Am ratios, mechanical cardiac time intervals and cMPI are presented. Conclusion Peak myocardial velocities increase with gestational age, while the mechanical time intervals remain more stable throughout the second half of pregnancy. Using an automated method to analyze cTDI-derived myocardial velocity traces, it was possible to construct reference ranges, which could be used in distinguishing between normal and abnormal fetal cardiac function.

  • Household air pollution mitigation with integrated biomass/cookstove strategies in Western Kenya
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Energy Policy. - : Elsevier. - 0301-4215 .- 1873-6777. ; 131, s. 168-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional cooking is today's largest global environmental health risk. Over 640 million people in Africa are expected to rely on biomass for cooking by 2040. In Kenya, cooking inefficiently with wood and charcoal persists as a cause of deforestation and household air pollution. This research analyses the effects of four biomass cookstove strategies on reducing air pollutant emissions in Kisumu County between 2015 and 2035 using the Long-Range Energy Alternatives Planning system. The Business as Usual scenario (BAU) was developed considering the historical trends in household energy use. Energy transition scenarios to Improved Cookstoves (ICS), Pellet Gasifier Stoves (PGS) and Biogas Stoves (BGS) were applied to examine the impact of these systems on energy savings and air pollution mitigation. An integrated scenario (INT) was evaluated as a mix of the ICS, PGS and BGS. The highest energy savings, in relation to the BAU, are achieved in the BGS (30.9%), followed by the INT (23.5%), PGS (19.4%) and ICS (9.2%). The BGS offers the highest reduction in the GHG (37.6%), CH4 (94.3%), NMVOCs (85.0%), CO (97.4%), PM2.5 (64.7%) and BC (48.4%) emissions, and the PGS the highest reduction in the N2O (83.0%) and NOx (90.7%) emissions, in relation to the BAU.

  • Picosecond hot-electron energy relaxation in NbN superconducting photodetectors
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 76:19, s. 2752-2754
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report time-resolved characterization of superconducting NbN hot-electron photodetectors using an electro-optic sampling method. Our samples were patterned into micron-size microbridges from 3.5-nm-thick NbN films deposited on sapphire substrates. The devices were illuminated with 100 fs optical pulses, and the photoresponse was measured in the ambient temperature range between 2.15 and 10.6 K (superconducting temperature transition TC). The experimental data agreed very well with the nonequilibrium hot-electron, two-temperature model. The quasiparticle thermalization time was ambient temperature independent and was measured to be 6.5 ps. The inelastic electron–phonon scattering time τe–ph tended to decrease with the temperature increase, although its change remained within the experimental error, while the phonon escape time τes decreased almost by a factor of two when the sample was put in direct contact with superfluid helium. Specifically, τe–ph and τes, fitted by the two-temperature model, were equal to 11.6 and 21 ps at 2.15 K, and 10(±2) and 38 ps at 10.5 K, respectively. The obtained value of τe–ph shows that the maximum intermediate frequency bandwidth of NbN hot-electron phonon-cooled mixers operating at TC can reach 16(+4/−3) GHz if one eliminates the bolometric phonon-heating effect.

  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops, PerCom Workshops 2018. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781538632277 ; , s. 40-45
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Internet has traditionally been a device-oriented architecture where devices with IP addresses are first-class citizens, able to serve and consume content or services, and their owners take part in the interaction only through those devices. The Internet of People (IoP) is a recent paradigm where devices become proxies of their users, and can act on their behalf. To realize IoP, new policies and rules for how devices can take actions are required. The role of context information grows as devices act autonomously based on the environment and existing social relationships between their owners. In addition, the social profiles of device owners determine e.g. how altruistic or resourceconserving they are in collaborative computing scenarios. In this paper we focus on community formation in IoP, a prerequisite for enabling collaborative scenarios, and discuss main challenges and propose potential solutions. © 2018 IEEE.

  • 3D skeletal uptake of F-18 sodium fluoride in PET/CT images is associated with overall survival in patients with prostate cancer
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: EJNMMI Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2191-219X. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Sodium fluoride (NaF) positron emission tomography combined with computer tomography (PET/CT) has shown to be more sensitive than the whole-body bone scan in the detection of skeletal uptake due to metastases in prostate cancer. We aimed to calculate a 3D index for NaF PET/CT and investigate its correlation to the bone scan index (BSI) and overall survival (OS) in a group of patients with prostate cancer. Methods: NaF PET/CT and bone scans were studied in 48 patients with prostate cancer. Automated segmentation of the thoracic and lumbar spines, sacrum, pelvis, ribs, scapulae, clavicles, and sternum were made in the CT images. Hotspots in the PET images were selected using both a manual and an automated method. The volume of each hotspot localized in the skeleton in the corresponding CT image was calculated. Two PET/CT indices, based on manual (manual PET index) and automatic segmenting using a threshold of SUV 15 (automated PET15 index), were calculated by dividing the sum of all hotspot volumes with the volume of all segmented bones. BSI values were obtained using a software for automated calculations. Results: BSI, manual PET index, and automated PET15 index were all significantly associated with OS and concordance indices were 0.68, 0.69, and 0.70, respectively. The median BSI was 0.39 and patients with a BSI > 0.39 had a significantly shorter median survival time than patients with a BSI 0.53 had a significantly shorter median survival time than patients with a manual PET index 0.11 had a significantly shorter median survival time than patients with an automated PET15 index

  • White matter hyperintensity quantification in large-scale clinical acute ischemic stroke cohorts - The MRI-GENIE study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Neuroimage-Clinical. - : Elsevier BV. - 2213-1582. ; 23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • White matter hyperintensity (WMH) burden is a critically important cerebrovascular phenotype linked to prediction of diagnosis and prognosis of diseases, such as acute ischemic stroke (AIS). However, current approaches to its quantification on clinical MRI often rely on time intensive manual delineation of the disease on T2 fluid attenuated inverse recovery (FLAIR), which hinders high-throughput analyses such as genetic discovery. In this work, we present a fully automated pipeline for quantification of WMH in clinical large-scale studies of AIS. The pipeline incorporates automated brain extraction, intensity normalization and WMH segmentation using spatial priors. We first propose a brain extraction algorithm based on a fully convolutional deep learning architecture, specifically designed for clinical FLAIR images. We demonstrate that our method for brain extraction outperforms two commonly used and publicly available methods on clinical quality images in a set of 144 subject scans across 12 acquisition centers, based on dice coefficient (median 0.95; inter-quartile range 0.94-0.95; p < 0.01) and Pearson correlation of total brain volume (r = 0.90). Subsequently, we apply it to the large-scale clinical multi-site MRI-GENIE study (N = 2783) and identify a decrease in total brain volume of -2.4 cc/year. Additionally, we show that the resulting total brain volumes can successfully be used for quality control of image preprocessing. Finally, we obtain WMH volumes by building on an existing automatic WMH segmentation algorithm that delineates and distinguishes between different cerebrovascular pathologies. The learning method mimics expert knowledge of the spatial distribution of the WMH burden using a convolutional auto-encoder. This enables successful computation of WMH volumes of 2533 clinical AIS patients. We utilize these results to demonstrate the increase of WMH burden with age (0.950 cc/year) and show that single site estimates can be biased by the number of subjects recruited.
