- Politik har i alla tider utspelats på olika typer av platser, från de politiska sammanträdesrummen till galgbacken utanför byn. Vilken betydelse hade rummet eller platsen för politikens utformning under förmodern tid, och vad ansågs vara en politisk handling? Utifrån ett rumsligt perspektiv och med en vidare syn på politik går det att förklara konflikter som annars inte skulle betraktas som politiska.I Politiska rum undersöker en grupp historiker platser och områden där konflikter utspelades mellan överhet och undersåtar under den förmoderna perioden. Texterna handlar om politik, hur politiken formade platserna och hur rum och plats i sin tur påverkade politiken. I bokens olika bidrag är rummet inte enbart den scen där politiken utspelades. Författarna diskuterar också hur rumsliga villkor har påverkat politiken, samt hur människors rörelser och handlingar bidragit till att särskilda platser och rum blivit politiska.

- This article investigates and discusses privatization and out-sourcing of various state enterprises, regarded as a political problem. The aim is to show that the contradiction between public and private organization, is not a modern phenomena, rather a question that has permeated political discourse even in pre-modern times. Theoretically, the study draws on Janet Newman and John Clarkes work on how “publicness” – defined as a consciousness about the meaning of the public – has constructed discursive chains. These chains merge conceptions of the political community, the organization of the enterprise, and values of the common good. The example used in the study is the debate about the organization of the Swedish customs service in the early 1700s.The analysis shows that the Swedish diet in 1723 was divided about the organization of the customs services. Some members of the diet thought that the customs should stay under state governance; some thought that a private entrepreneur should be engaged via a lease contract. The conflict between the two parts led to fierce debates at the diet, each side hurling arguments for their opinion. Those in favor for state service, considered the private entrepreneurs to be selfish and greedy; those arguing for a lease contract, considered the state servants to be sloppy and inefficient.The debate about the customs service in 1723 have proven that the discursive chains, derived from Newman and Clarke, were in place also in the politics of eighteenth century Sweden. The most prominent aspect in the customs debate is the linkage of the publicness to a specific form of organization – in this example public or private. These findings have briefly been compared to previous research on Sweden in the 1600s, and the debate in 1723 thus provides examples of discursive changes, but also of continuity of the arguments given.

- This article analyses the political contestation between the Swedish towns and the General Customs Lease Company, 1726–1761. It examines the agency of local groups, i.e. the towns, when they reacted and responded to policies introduced to them by the state, but pursued by a private company. The argument is that the introduction of the private Customs Company in 1726 altered the rules of political interaction. Usually, the conflict between the state and the localities can be described on the axis: local–central. In the case of the period of the Customs Company, the relation should rather be described as a triangle: local–private–central. This triangle, has implications for perceptions of how the state was supposed to function, and for questions about the common good. The introduction of the General Customs Lease Company, faced the towns with a fait accompli, and they were supposed to accept the new organisation. However, if the towns are regarded as political subjects, it is rather the start of resistance and contestation against the private company. Consequently, the example of the towns and the customs service illustrates how local and central politics became entangled with each other as a part of the early modern state building process. The contested customs in the eighteenth century is an example of the possibilities for the localities to have a say and gain support for their arguments in a specific question.

- Syftet med den här uppsatsen är att ur ett platsteoretiskt perspektiv analysera beskrivningar av statens lokaler under 1600-talet. Jag ska diskutera hur byråkratin fungerade som platsskapare när staten aktivt pekade ut hur förvaltningens verksamhet rumsligt skulle vara organiserad. Källmaterialet utgörs av förordningar och instruktioner från perioden 1618–1704, och jag redogör för och analyserar de passager i förordningstexterna som beskriver hur kontorslokalerna skulle se ut och hur de skulle vara ordnade.

- På kronprinsens signal slogs dubbeldörrarna upp. Planen var sjösatt och med prinsen i släptåg lämnade kungen, Adolf Fredrik, omedelbart rådskammaren. Scenen är hämtad från Stockholms slott den 15 december 1768. Kungen hade nyss meddelat att han med omedelbar verkan lade ner sin krona och upphörde med regerandet. Det hjälpte inte att riksrådet Adam Horn drog Adolf Fredrik i armen för att förmå honom att stanna kvar och att flera av de andra riksråden bönföll honom att ändra sig. Kungen och kronprinsen, den blivande Gustav III, tågade sonika ut ur rådskammaren. De förbluffade riksråden kunde konstatera att Sveriges tron för tillfället var tom – kungen strejkade. Strejk var så klart inte ett ord som användes av de inblandade, istället talades om att kungen hade »nedlagt sitt ämbete« eller »nedlagt riksstyrelsen«, men i praktiken innebar det att Adolf Fredrik inte längre gjorde sitt jobb.

Material från olika tidsperioder ger omfattande, livfulla och innehållsrika källor att arbeta med.Kapitlet är avgränsat till protokoll som innehåller politiska debatter. En enkel definition är att det är protokoll från beslutande politiska församlingar, till exempel riksdagen, landstingen och kommunerna, men i någon mån också de centrala myndigheterna, som riksrådet och kollegierna under äldre tid, samt ämbetsverk och affärsverk under modern tid.

- Den här artikeln är ett försök att rekonstruera postförbindelserna mellan kungen och rådet i Stockholm, under Karl XII:s tid i Osmanska riket. Detta har tidigare inte gjorts på ett systematiskt vis och ger därför en möjlighet satt öka vår kunskap och förståelse för hur Sverige styrdes från det Osmanska riket. Undersökningens fokus ligger på perioden mellan 1709, då kungen flydde från Poltava, och sträcka sig till 1714 då kungen återvände till Sverige. Först ges en kort redogörelse för postförbindelserna mellan Stockholm och fältarmén, innan slaget vid Poltava.

- This introductory chapter argues for the use of the concept of ‘welfare city’ to understand and explain the development of modern public services and welfare systems. Previous research has hitherto put too much emphasis on the welfare state and on the period after 1945. This book calls for a shift in perspective, from the national level, to the local level, as well as a focus on the decisive period 1850–1940. Urban areas and cites were of paramount importance for the establishment of public services and welfare systems. The analytical framework deployed in this book, therefore, places urban politics in front of national politics and shifts the chronological focus to an earlier period in time. This theme and its adjacent argument are explored through studies of the Nordic countries. The chapters contain various examples on welfare and public services that includes infrastructure and housing projects, but also health care, education, outdoor life and entertainment. Together, the contributing authors claims that it is necessary to analyse local politics in order to explain the discursive changes that paved the way for a wave of investments in public services and social welfare in the period.
