    • Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production plays an important role in the process of anaerobic digestion (AD), which is often the critical factor determining the metabolic pathways and energy recovery efficiency. Fermenting bacteria and acetogenic bacteria are in syntrophic relations during AD. Thus, clear elucidation of the interspecies electron transfer and energetic mechanisms among syntrophic bacteria is essential for optimization of acidogenic. This review aims to discuss the electron transfer and energetic mechanism in syntrophic processes between fermenting bacteria and acetogenic bacteria during VFAs production. Homoacetogenesis also plays a role in the syntrophic system by converting H2 and CO2 to acetate. Potential applications of these syntrophic activities in bioelectrochemical system and value-added product recovery from AD of organic wastes are also discussed. The study of acidogenic syntrophic relations is in its early stages, and additional investigation is required to better understand the mechanism of syntrophic relations.

    • The objective of this study was to investigate the fungal community succession and variations in chicken manure (CM) compost with different concentration of bamboo biochar (BB) as additive via the using of metagenomics method. The consequent obviously revealed that Chytridiomycota, Mucoromycota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant phylum, while Batrachochytrium, Funneliformis, Mucor, Phizophagus and Pyronema were the pre-dominant genera in each treatment. Redundancy analyses indicated that higher dosage of biochar applied treatments has significant correlation between fungal communities and environmental factors. The diversity of fungal community was analogous but the relative abundance (RA) was inconsistent among the all treatments. In addition, the principal component analysis was also confirmed that T5 and T6 treatments have considerably correlation than other treatments. However, the mean value of RA remained maximum in higher dosage of biochar blended treatments. Ultimately, the RA of different fungal genus and species were influenced in CM compost by the BB amendment.

    • Micro-and nano-plastics (MNPs) (size < 5 mm/<100 nm) epitomize one of the emergent environmental pollutants with its existence all around the globe. Their high persistence nature and release of chemicals/additives used in synthesis of plastics materials may pose cascading impacts on living organism across the globe. Natural connectivity of all the environmental compartments (terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric) leads to migration/dispersion of MNPs from one compartment to others. Nevertheless, the information on dispersion of MNPs across the environmental compartments and its possible impacts on living organisms are still missing. This review first acquaints with dispersion mechanisms of MNPs in the environment, its polymeric/oligomeric and chemical constituents and then emphasized its impacts on living organism. Based on the existing knowledge about the MNPs’ constituent and its potential impacts on the viability, development, lifecycle, movements, and fertility of living organism via several potential mechanisms, such as irritation, oxidative damage, digestion impairment, tissue deposition, change in gut microbial communities’ dynamics, impaired fatty acid metabolism, and molecular damage are emphasized. Finally, at the end, the review provided the challenges associated with remediation of plastics pollutions and desirable strategies, policies required along with substantial gaps in MNPs research were recommended for future studies.

  • Nitrogen removal performance and metabolic pathways analysis of a novel aerobic denitrifying halotolerant Pseudomonas balearica strain RAD-17

    • An aerobic denitrification strain, Pseudomonas balearica RAD-17, was identified and showed efficient inorganic nitrogen removal ability. The average NO3–-N, NO2–-N, and total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) removal rate (>95% removal efficiency) in a batch test was 6.22 mg/(L·∙h), 6.30 mg/(L·∙h), and 1.56 mg/(L·∙h), respectively. Meanwhile, optimal incubate conditions were obtained through single factor experiments. For nitrogen removal pathways, the transcriptional results proved that respiratory nitrate reductases encoded by napA, which was primarily performed in aerobic denitrification and cell assimilation, were conducted by gluS and gluD genes for ammonium metabolism. In addition, adding the strain RAD-17 into actual wastewater showed obvious higher denitrification performance than in the no inoculum group (84.22% vs. 22.54%), and the maximum cell abundance achieved 28.5 ± 4.5% in a ratio of total cell numbers. Overall, the efficient nitrogen removal performance plus strong environmental fitness makes the strain RAD-17 a potential alternative for RAS (recirculating aquaculture system) effluent treatment. © 2020 by the authors.     • Purpose: To illuminate the meaning of social relationships and health concerns as experienced by adolescents and young people during the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: A longitudinal qualitative study was conducted. Data reported from 172 adolescents and young people aged 12–24 years in five countries; Chile, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States collected from May 2020 to June 2021 were analysed via thematic analysis.Results: Adolescents and young peoples’ experiences of social relationships and health concerns were described in seven themes: Family proximity, conflicts and frustration; difficulties and challenges related to limited living space; peer relations and maintaining friendship in times of social distancing; the importance of school as a place for interaction; vulnerability, emotional distress and uncertainty about the future; health concerns and sense of caring for others; and worries and concerns related to financial hardship. These reports show that the changes to everyday life that were introduced by public responses to the pandemic generated feelings of loneliness, vulnerability, and emotional distress, as well as increased sense of togetherness with family.Conclusions: The everyday lives of adolescents and young people were restricted and affected more by the consequences of the pandemic than by the COVID-19 virus. These experiences had various impacts on well-being and mental health, where some individuals felt more exposed and vulnerable to emotional distress and loneliness than others. Family and peer relationships could be protective and support a sense of togetherness and belonging. Hence, social relationships are important to provide emotional support. Support for adolescents and young people should be tailored accordingly around social and emotional concerns, to encourage health and well-being.
