  • Efficient and High-Luminance Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes Based on CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals Synthesized from a Dual-Purpose Organic Lead Source

    • Rational engineering of the surface properties of perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) is critical to obtain light emitters with simultaneous high photoluminescence efficiency and excellent charge transport properties for light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, the commonly used lead halide sources make it hard to rationally optimize the surface compositions of the PeNCs. In addition, previously developed ligand engineering strategies for conventional inorganic nanocrystals easily deteriorate surface properties of the PeNCs, bringing additional difficulties in optimizing their optoelectronic properties. In this work, a novel strategy of employing a dual-purpose organic lead source for the synthesis of highly luminescent PeNCs with enhanced charge transport property is developed. Lead naphthenate (Pb(NA)(2)), of which the metal ions work as lead sources while the naphthenate can function as the surface ligands afterward, is explored and the obtained products under different synthesis conditions are comprehensively investigated. Monodispersed cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) with controllable size and excellent optical properties, showing superior photoluminescence quantum yields up to 80%, is obtained. Based on the simultaneously enhanced electrical properties of the Pb(NA)(2)-derived PeNCs, the resultant LEDs demonstrate a high peak external quantum efficiency of 8.44% and a superior maximum luminance of 31 759 cd cm(-2).

    • This article documents the addition of 238 microsatellite marker loci and 72 pairs of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) sequencing primers to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Adelges tsugae, Artemisia tridentata, Astroides calycularis, Azorella selago, Botryllus schlosseri, Botrylloides violaceus, Cardiocrinum cordatum var. glehnii, Campylopterus curvipennis, Colocasia esculenta, Cynomys ludovicianus, Cynomys leucurus, Cynomys gunnisoni, Epinephelus coioides, Eunicella singularis, Gammarus pulex, Homoeosoma nebulella, Hyla squirella, Lateolabrax japonicus, Mastomys erythroleucus, Pararge aegeria, Pardosa sierra, Phoenicopterus ruber ruber and Silene latifolia. These loci were cross-tested on the following species: Adelges abietis, Adelges cooleyi, Adelges piceae, Pineus pini, Pineus strobi, Tubastrea micrantha, three other Tubastrea species, Botrylloides fuscus, Botrylloides simodensis, Campylopterus hemileucurus, Campylopterus rufus, Campylopterus largipennis, Campylopterus villaviscensio, Phaethornis longuemareus, Florisuga mellivora, Lampornis amethystinus, Amazilia cyanocephala, Archilochus colubris, Epinephelus lanceolatus, Epinephelus fuscoguttatus, Symbiodinium temperate-A clade, Gammarus fossarum, Gammarus roeselii, Dikerogammarus villosus and Limnomysis benedeni.     • A rhodamine B-based sensor (RS) was designed and synthesized by a combination of the spirolacton rhodamine B (fluorophore) and multidentate chelates (ionophore) with high affinity towards Hg2+. In the presence of Hg2+, the resulting red-orange fluorescence (under UV light) and naked eye red color of IDS are supposed to be used for quantitative and qualitative measurement of Hg2+. Further fluorescent titration and analysis demonstrate that RS can selectively detect Hg2+ within 1 s with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 16 nM in acetonitrile media, meanwhile, the association constant (K-a) was calculated to be 0.32 x 10(5) M-1. More importantly, the resultant complex (RSHg) of RS and Hg2+ has also been successfully applied to detect limited water content in acetonitrile solution. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier B.V.

    • The development of nanostructured conducting polymers based materials for electrochemical applications has attracted intense attention due to their environmental stability, unique reversible redox properties, abundant electron active sites, rapid electron transfer and tunable conductivity. Here, a phytic acid doped polyaniline nanofibers based nanocomposite was synthesized using a simple and green method, the properties of the resulting nanomaterial was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). A glassy carbon electrode modified by the nanocomposite was evaluated as a new platform for the simultaneous detection of trace amounts of Cd2+ and Pb2+ using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV). The synergistic contribution from PANI nanofibers and phytic acid enhances the accumulation efficiency and the charge transfer rate of metal ions during the DPASV analysis. Under the optimal conditions, good linear relationships were obtained for Cd2+ in a range of 0.05–60 μg L−1, with the detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.02 μg L−1, and for Pb2+ in a range of 0.1–60 μg L−1, with the detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.05 μg L−1. The new electrode was successfully applied to real water samples for simultaneous detection of Cd2+ and Pb2+ with good recovery rates. Therefore, the new electrode material may be a capable candidate for the detection of trace levels of heavy metal ions.

  • Exploring teleconnections between the summer NAO (SNAO) and climate in East Asia over the last four centuries – a tree-ring perspective

    • The summer North Atlantic Oscillation (SNAO), derived from the first EOF of mean sea level pressure over the extratropical North Atlantic in July and August, has a close association with climate variability over the North Atlantic region, and beyond, on both short and long time scales. Recent findings suggested a teleconnection, through the SNAO, linking climate variability over Northern Europe with that of East Asia in the latter part of the twentieth century. Here we investigate the temporal stability of that teleconnection for the last four centuries using 4261 tree-ring width series from 106 sites and, additionally, ten climate reconstructions from East Asia. Our results showed a great potential in using tree-ring width (TRW) data to extend analyses of the SNAO influence on East Asian climate beyond the instrumental period, but preferably with a denser network. The strongest SNAO-TRW associations were found in central East Asia (in and around Mongolia) and on the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. In addition, the analysis showed that the association between the SNAO and East Asian climate over the last 400 years has been variable, both among regions and at specific sites. Moreover, a clear difference in the SNAO-TRW associations was found on two examined time scales, being stronger on longer timescales. Our results indicate that TRW data can be a useful tool to explore the remote influence of the SNAO on East Asian climate in the past.

    • We describe the outcome of a large international interlaboratory study of the measurement of particle number concentration of colloidal nanoparticles, project 10 of the technical working area 34, "Nanoparticle Populations" of the Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS). A total of 50 laboratories delivered results for the number concentration of 30 nm gold colloidal nanoparticles measured using particle tracking analysis (PTA), single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) light spectroscopy, centrifugal liquid sedimentation (CLS) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The study provides quantitative data to evaluate the repeatability of these methods and their reproducibility in the measurement of number concentration of model nanoparticle systems following a common measurement protocol. We find that the population-averaging methods of SAXS, CLS and UV-Vis have high measurement repeatability and reproducibility, with between-labs variability of 2.6%, 11% and 1.4% respectively. However, results may be significantly biased for reasons including inaccurate material properties whose values are used to compute the number concentration. Particle-counting method results are less reproducibile than population-averaging methods, with measured between-labs variability of 68% and 46% for PTA and spICP-MS respectively. This study provides the stakeholder community with important comparative data to underpin measurement reproducibility and method validation for number concentration of nanoparticles.

  • Telomere-to-telomere and haplotype-resolved genome assembly of the Chinese cork oak (Quercus variabilis)

    • The Quercus variabilis, a deciduous broadleaved tree species, holds significant ecological and economical value. While a chromosome-level genome for this species has been made available, it remains riddled with unanchored sequences and gaps. In this study, we present a nearly complete comprehensive telomere-to-telomere (T2T) and haplotype-resolved reference genome for Q. variabilis. This was achieved through the integration of ONT ultra-long reads, PacBio HiFi long reads, and Hi-C data. The resultant two haplotype genomes measure 789 Mb and 768 Mb in length, with a contig N50 of 65 Mb and 56 Mb, and were anchored to 12 allelic chromosomes. Within this T2T haplotype-resolved assembly, we predicted 36,830 and 36,370 protein-coding genes, with 95.9% and 96.0% functional annotation for each haplotype genome. The availability of the T2T and haplotype-resolved reference genome lays a solid foundation, not only for illustrating genome structure and functional genomics studies but also to inform and facilitate genetic breeding and improvement of cultivated Quercus species.

  • An investigation of the Ni/carbonate interfaces on dual function materials in integrated CO2 capture and utilisation cycles

    • CO2 capture and utilisation (CCU) is a promising strategy to effectively mitigate the adverse greenhouse effects caused by CO2 emissions at an industrial scale. Through a process intensification strategy known as integrated CO2 capture and utilisation (ICCU), CO2 capture and catalytic CO2 conversion can be achieved in a single process with the use of dual function materials (DFMs), which are both CO2 sorbents and CO2 conversion catalysts. Given the significantly different operating conditions of ICCU from conventional catalytic CO2 hydrogenation, the catalytic mechanism of DFMs, especially during CO2 hydrogenation, needs to be thoroughly investigated. In this study, the relationship between the nature of the Ni/carbonate interfaces and the performance of Ni-based DFMs over ICCU cycles is systematically investigated. A series of Ni/alkaline earth carbonate DFMs were synthesised with varying Ca:Mg ratios to simulate different metal-carbonate model interfaces. At 400 °C, CH4 formation with nearly 100% CH4 selectivity was achieved on Ni/CaCO3 over 15 ICCU cycles. In general, Ni/CaCO3 interfaces correspond to higher CO2 conversion and higher CH4 selectivity than Ni/MgCO3 interfaces. Such trend may be attributed to the higher surface basicity of CaO and the higher thermal stability of CaCO3. As a consequence, the hydrogenation of the Ni/CaCO3 interface proceed via the formate pathway, in which carbonates are consecutively converted to surface formates, methoxyl, methyl species and eventually desorb as methane. This reaction model is applicable to the hydrogenation of both surface carbonate and bulk carbonates, although the former proceeds with much faster kinetics. On the weakly alkaline Ni/MgCO3 interface, MgCO3 preferentially decomposes to form gaseous CO2, which is subsequently hydrogenated via the reverse-water-gas-shift pathway, with CO as the key reaction intermediate. Interestingly, in situ infrared spectroscopy shows similar surface significant species during the direct hydrogenation of DFMs and during the conventional catalytic hydrogenation of molecular CO2, suggesting that the catalytic mechanisms during the two operating regimes are highly correlated.
