  • Surface structure promoted high-yield growth and magnetotransport properties of Bi2Se3 nanoribbons
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322 .- 2045-2322. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present work, a catalyst-free physical vapour deposition method is used to synthesize high yield of Bi2Se3 nanoribbons. By replacing standard glass or quartz substrates with aluminium covered with ultrathin porous anodized aluminium oxide (AAO), the number of synthesized nanoribbons per unit area can be increased by 20-100 times. The mechanisms of formation and yield of the nanoribbons synthesized on AAO substrates having different arrangement and size of pores are analysed and discussed. It is shown that the yield and average length of the nanoribbons can base tuned by adjustment of the synthesis parameters. Analysis of magnetotransport measurements for the individual Bi2Se3 nanoribbons transferred on a Si/SiO2 substrate show the presence of three different populations of charge carriers, originating from the Dirac surface states, bulk carriers and carriers from a trivial 2DEG from an accumulation layer at the Bi2Se3 nanoribbon interface with the substrate.

  • Tuning the ground state of cuprate superconducting thin films by nanofaceted substrates
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Communications Materials. - : Springer Nature. - 2662-4443. ; 5:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anisotropic transport properties have been assessed in a number of cuprate superconductors, providing evidence for a nematic state. We have recently shown that in ultra-thin YBa2Cu3O7−δ films, where nematicity is induced via strain engineering, there is a suppression of charge density wave scattering along the orthorhombic a-axis and a concomitant enhancement of strange metal behavior along the b-axis. Here we develop a microscopic model, that is based on the strong interaction between the substrate facets and the thin film, to account for the unconventional phenomenology. Based on the atomic force microscopy imaging of the substrates’ surface, the model is able to predict the absence (presence) of nematicity and the resulting transport properties in films grown on SrTiO3 (MgO) substrates. Our result paves the way to new tuning capabilities of the ground state of high-temperature superconductors by substrate engineering.

  • Dynamical charge density fluctuations pervading the phase diagram of a Cu-based high-Tc superconductor
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 365:6456, s. 906-910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Charge density modulations have been observed in all families of high–critical temperature (Tc) superconducting cuprates. Although they are consistently found in the underdoped region of the phase diagram and at relatively low temperatures, it is still unclear to what extent they influence the unusual properties of these systems. Using resonant x-ray scattering, we carefully determined the temperature dependence of charge density modulations in YBa2Cu3O7–d and Nd1+xBa2–xCu3O7–d for several doping levels. We isolated short-range dynamical charge density fluctuations in addition to the previously known quasi-critical charge density waves. They persist up to well above the pseudogap temperature T*, are characterized by energies of a few milli–electron volts, and pervade a large area of the phase diagram.

  • Signature of quantum criticality in cuprates by charge density fluctuations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The universality of the strange metal phase in many quantum materials is often attributed to the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP), a zero-temperature phase transition ruled by quantum fluctuations. In cuprates, where superconductivity hinders direct QCP observation, indirect evidence comes from the identification of fluctuations compatible with the strange metal phase. Here we show that the recently discovered charge density fluctuations (CDF) possess the right properties to be associated to a quantum phase transition. Using resonant x-ray scattering, we studied the CDF in two families of cuprate superconductors across a wide doping range (up to p = 0.22). At p* ≈ 0.19, the putative QCP, the CDF intensity peaks, and the characteristic energy Δ is minimum, marking a wedge-shaped region in the phase diagram indicative of a quantum critical behavior, albeit with anomalies. These findings strengthen the role of charge order in explaining strange metal phenomenology and provide insights into high-temperature superconductivity.

  • Tailoring Superconductivity in Large-Area Single-Layer NbSe2 via Self-Assembled Molecular Adlayers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 21:1, s. 136-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) represent an ideal testbench for the search of materials by design, because their optoelectronic properties can be manipulated through surface engineering and molecular functionalization. However, the impact of molecules on intrinsic physical properties of TMDs, such as superconductivity, remains largely unexplored. In this work, the critical temperature (TC) of large-area NbSe2 monolayers is manipulated, employing ultrathin molecular adlayers. Spectroscopic evidence indicates that aligned molecular dipoles within the self-assembled layers act as a fixed gate terminal, collectively generating a macroscopic electrostatic field on NbSe2. This results in an ∼55% increase and a 70% decrease in TC depending on the electric field polarity, which is controlled via molecular selection. The reported functionalization, which improves the air stability of NbSe2, is efficient, practical, up-scalable, and suited to functionalize large-area TMDs. Our results indicate the potential of hybrid 2D materials as a novel platform for tunable superconductivity.

  • Uniform doping of graphene close to the Dirac point by polymer-assisted assembly of molecular dopants
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tuning the charge carrier density of two-dimensional (2D) materials by incorporating dopants into the crystal lattice is a challenging task. An attractive alternative is the surface transfer doping by adsorption of molecules on 2D crystals, which can lead to ordered molecular arrays. However, such systems, demonstrated in ultra-high vacuum conditions (UHV), are often unstable in ambient conditions. Here we show that air-stable doping of epitaxial graphene on SiC—achieved by spin-coating deposition of 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-tetracyano-quino-dimethane (F4TCNQ) incorporated in poly(methyl-methacrylate)—proceeds via the spontaneous accumulation of dopants at the graphene-polymer interface and by the formation of a charge-transfer complex that yields low-disorder, charge-neutral, large-area graphene with carrier mobilities ~70 000 cm2V−1s−1at cryogenic temperatures. The assembly of dopants on 2D materials assisted by a polymer matrix, demonstrated by spin-coating wafer-scale substrates in ambient conditions, opens up a scalable technological route toward expanding the functionality of 2D materials.

  • High-Mobility Ambipolar Magnetotransport in Topological Insulator Bi2Se3 Nanoribbons
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 16:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanoribbons of topological insulators (TIs) have been suggested for a variety of applications exploiting the properties of the topologically protected surface Dirac states. In these proposals it is crucial to achieve a high tunability of the Fermi energy, through the Dirac point while preserving a high mobility of the involved carriers. Tunable transport in TI nanoribbons has been achieved by chemical doping of the materials so to reduce the bulk carriers' concentration, however at the expense of the mobility of the surface Dirac electrons, which is substantially reduced. Here we study bare Bi2Se3 nanoribbons transferred on a variety of oxide substrates and demonstrate that the use of a large relative permittivity SrTiO3 substrate enables the Fermi energy to be tuned through the Dirac point and an ambipolar field effect to be obtained. Through magnetotransport and Hall conductance measurements, performed on single Bi2Se3 nanoribbons, we demonstrate that electron and hole carriers are exclusively high-mobility Dirac electrons, without any bulk contribution. The use of SrTiO3 allows therefore an easy field effect gating in TI nanostructures providing an ideal platform to take advantage of the properties of topological surface states.

  • Topological insulator nanoribbon Josephson junctions: Evidence for size effects in transport properties
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 128:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have used Bi 2 Se 3 nanoribbons, grown by catalyst-free physical vapor deposition to fabricate high quality Josephson junctions with Al superconducting electrodes. In our devices, we observe a pronounced reduction of the Josephson critical current density J c by reducing the width of the junction, which in our case corresponds to the width of the nanoribbon. Because the topological surface states extend over the entire circumference of the nanoribbon, the superconducting transport associated with them is carried by modes on both the top and bottom surfaces of the nanoribbon. We show that the J c reduction as a function of the nanoribbon width can be accounted for by assuming that only the modes traveling on the top surface contribute to the Josephson transport as we derive by geometrical consideration. This finding is of great relevance for topological quantum circuitry schemes since it indicates that the Josephson current is mainly carried by the topological surface states.

  • Oxygen ordering in untwinned YBa2Cu3 O7-δ films driven by electrothermal stress
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 107:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We experimentally investigate the displacement of oxygen vacancies at high current densities in highly untwinned YBa2Cu3O7-δ films grown on top of MgO substrates. Transport bridges oriented along the YBa2Cu3O7-δ crystallographic directions [100] (a axis), [010] (b axis), and [110] (45∘ from principal axes) reveal that the onset of vacancy migration is mainly determined by the local temperature (or equivalently by the dissipated power) rather than the associated activation energy. Exceeding this threshold value, a clear directional migration proceeds as evidenced by optical microscopy. Concomitant electrotransport measurements show that an intermediate phase, characterized by a decrease in resistivity, precedes long-range migration of vacancies. We numerically demonstrate that this intermediate phase consists of a homogenization of the oxygen distribution along the transport bridge, a phenomenon strongly dependent on the activation energy and the initial degree of disorder. These findings provide some important clues to determine the level of order/disorder in YBa2Cu3O7-δ films based on electric transport measurements.

  • Incipient Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in two-dimensional coplanar Josephson junctions
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 94:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Superconducting hybrid junctions are revealing a variety of effects. Some of them are due to the special layout of these devices, which often use a coplanar configuration with relatively large barrier channels and the possibility of hosting Pearl vortices. A Josephson junction with a quasi-ideal two-dimensional barrier has been realized by growing graphene on SiC with Al electrodes. Chemical vapor deposition offers centimeter size monolayer areas where it is possible to realize a comparative analysis of different devices with nominally the same barrier. In samples with a graphene gap below 400 nm, we have found evidence of Josephson coherence in the presence of an incipient Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. When the magnetic field is cycled, a remarkable hysteretic collapse and revival of the Josephson supercurrent occurs. Similar hysteresis are found in granular systems and are usually justified within the Bean critical state model (CSM). We show that the CSM, with appropriate account for the low-dimensional geometry, can partly explain the odd features measured in these junctions.
